tried some low light stuff at a club, also used the pop-up flash of the RX100 the first time. wayyyy too strong as expected, and no way of dialling it down in the menus either  :(

I ended up covering up half of it with my finger, also tried flashing through a bar napkin as a diffuser

yeah that pillow was very red. iirc the film I used, fuji, skewed a little heavy on the reds/skin tones, which was kinda necessary for shooting low-ish light exposures (I  brought a tiny lamp with a daylight bulb with me haha) in scenes that were mostly bland as shit... I didn't expect someone to have such a ridiculously red pillow, however. Was kind of a devil to tone down in the dark room.

Looking to get a better compact camera than my Fuji X10 that can shoot better in low-light scenarios. Is the Sony RX100 still king of this series? I was thinking about getting the Mk. 1 model which is going down in price (~$350).

Dunno, I got an RX100 Mk1, it's quite nice for its size. But if I got a cam today I would probably get a Ricoh GR (APS-C sensor). Friend got one and the images are pretty awesome. Like this one:

Checked out the GR and the images I see are  :o :o :o

Almost double the price of the RX100 though, and looking at your previous photos in the thread it looks like you're pretty happy with that camera so I'll hop on that instead.

Yeah, it's an A-OK camera for the size. F1.8 is nice, but it's only at the widest setting and goes darker quite rapidly as you zoom in. Too noisy from ISO400 and up, and stay away from the multi-segment AF if you can, it tends to always put the focus at the nearest target which has ruined some pics for me.

Vacay y'all. Staying in Kavala, eastern Greece for a week. Renting a room in this swedish-owned house, built in 1936 in functionalist style, and still retaining pretty much all the original furniture. My GF got a scholarship to stay here for 4 weeks, so I'm joining her for this first week.

Pretty Greece died in 2009! Yeah, it's an aqueduct. Haven't been over there yet during daylight hours, will go there during the week.

Thanks! Quite a compliment coming from you.

That one was my first attempt at a deep sky object so I used my AT65EDQ telescope on an Orion Sirius tracking mount hooked up to my Nikon D300. Done in my back yard in Houston too. You can get some cool stuff even with light pollution

I started out just doing some wide field star shots, constellations, the moon, stuff like that. Did that on a basic tripod with remote and my standard lenses (anywhere from 25mm to 300mm).  I got some cool stuff that way but because of star trails I couldn’t get any long exposures without the tracking mount I bought. Still pretty easy to get your feet wet though.

Thanks man! I didn't have a very high budget for this trip so made an effort to try to take a lot of photos instead, so I had the camera with me pretty much all the time which gave me a couple of "lucky" moment shots which I've always felt I've missed out on in my earlier tries, hehe!

Hmmm, I think I really like the look of 85mm on FF. Just the right amount of compression and allowable framing. I know I wouldnt be able to acheive the look of the forest path shot with my 50mm.

I was so inspired by this guy: https://www.instagram.com/masashi_wakui/ who shoots such incredible Tokyo night shots, and almost all of these are shot on an 85mm prime as well according to his comments. So that's why I decided to get this lens for night city pics.

i found shooting in the UAE to be quite difficult. it didn't help that i was pressed for time; there's always something to do in either dubai or abu dhabi

you really have to make time for your camera when you travel, which i rarely ever do :'(

Nah attachments can't really fix that. Maybe shoot at a low ISO with a tripod + long exposure and then brighten in post?

Yeah but there's like, physical limitations that still apply.

Low light is still an obvious area where dedicated cameras have a huge leg up, just because of how large the sensor sizes are allowed to get. Phone sensors are ridiculously tiny in comparison.

Basically, give it 5 years. It wouldn't surprise me if Apple or Google added an in-software "low light mode" that takes a nightvision shot then colorizes it based on a second version with normal exposure. With enough machine learning they may be able to fake it til they make it here.
