the thursday chat room
« on: May 15, 2008, 12:33:38 PM »
post whatever you want in here.  no actual topic, just say whatever's on your mind.  something to keep a conversation going for those using the board as a time passing tool at work.

i'm so fucking bored right now.  I had an awesome breakfast though...

2 pieces of french toast
bacon egg and cheese taco with salsa
chocolate milk

now i'm bored as hell.  i bought a shitton of blu rays last night though, time to go watch them when I get home.

I watched :bow American Psycho :bow2 on Blu Ray last night.  So awesome.

I've probably used my 360 more for just playing music in the background lately than I have for playing games. I wish the visualizer was as cool as the PS3's though.

I'm thinking about going shopping today before or after class. I want to get a book (The Black Company) and a new psu. The psu that came with my computer is 250w; I plan on getting a 350w one since it's on sale. Then I'll be able to upgrade my graphics card in the future

i haven't even messed with the ps3 visualizer because it won't recognize my pc and when I put a bunch of mp3's on a usb drive and plugged it into the ps3, it didn't recognize one fucking song.  The 360 recognized all of mine automatically.  So fuck the ps3's media playing abilities for now.  The 360 also recognized the majority of my downloaded movies and tv shows without re-encoding.  The PS3?  Only one episode of The Wonder Years ::)  Fuck that shit.

You should get a 450w psu then get a next gen card.  :-*

I want to go home and play more crysis, then play a lot of guitar, then more crysis.  Going fishing this weekend though and I'm excited about that. :hyper

Lame. Lately, I've been having problems with my iTunes music folder being recognized by my 360. I'm using Windows Media Connect and I have the iTunes music folder being shared, but it seems like some new CD's I'll add won't be recognized but some will. If I just put the music that isn't recognized by my 360 into a new separate folder, it recognizes it. It's odd and fairly simple to workaround, but slightly annoying.

The easiest way I've found to fix that is to open up those files in WMP and right clicking on them and saying "share" or some shit like.  I had that problem with my 360 all the time for a while and I fixed it doing that.

my book is awesome

everyone who likes fantasy should read it

Quote
Wizardry & Wild Romance: A Study of Epic Fantasy
9 | Collection | Fantasy | First Person Perspective | MonkeyBrain | Difficult Reading | Other Series
Author: Michael Moorcock
Rating: 9   Reviewer: SCBryce
Genre: Fantasy   Publisher:MonkeyBrain
Binding: Paperback
Wizardry & Wild Romance: A Study of Epic Fantasy

Michael Moorcock's treatise has been updated and re-released in Monkeybrain Books' 2004 edition with an Introduction by China Miéville and Afterword by Jeff VanderMeer. It is valuable reading for fans and writers of the genre, providing not only an astonishing history of speculative fiction but also critiques of various works, authors, and stereotypes by Moorcock, one of both Britian's and the genre's most prolific, original, and respected authors. But be forewarned: bring your dictionary and leave your sense of decorum at the door.

Miéville's Introduction provides an apt description of the book, likening it to a wild and sometimes frustrating tour by a frenzied librarian whose knowledge and insights bring fresh perspective on a hackneyed genre. In chapters entitled Origins, The Exotic Landscape, The Heroes and Heroines, Wit and Humour, Epic Pooh, and Excursions and Developments, Moorcock sets forth and develops his thesis: good fantasy should allow for self-reflection and self-understanding, as well as wit, epic elements, irony, poetry, objectivity, metaphor, and insight into the human condition. "The romance's [his word for fantasy] prime concern," he writes, "is not with character or narrative but with the evocation of strong, powerful images; symbols conjuring up a multitude of sensations to be used (as mystics once used distorting mirrors, as romantics used opium or, latterly, LSD) as escape from the pressures of the objective world or as a means of achieving increased self-awareness." (Wizardry, p. 20)

A major weakness is the uncountable references and terms dropped throughout Wizardry without any context or clarification, leaving the reader (presumably less well-traveled in the genre than Moorcock) no more enlightened. This on-going problem is one of the most serious structural flaws of the work because it limits what the reader can learn from Moorcock's impressive familiarity with the genre. Other weakness include: failure to distinguish between fact and opinion; unacknowledged and unexplained contradictions; blanket condemnations of certain authors (particularly J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis); and the generally acerbic tone.

Despite its weaknesses, the strengths of Wizardry are legion. Moorcock writes with authority born of experience, knowledge, wisdom, and his own unrivaled place in the genre. Wizardry introduces the reader to under-appreciated writers. Numerous excerpts help illustrate Moorcock's points. The work is full of lines that cause thoughtful pauses, such as: "A writer of fantasy must be judged, I think, by the level of inventive intensity at which he or she works." (Wizardry, p. 47) Reading Wizardry was a true learning experience, and many of Moorcock's points resonate strongly.

Perhaps the greatest legacy of a work like Wizardry is sparking such discussions. While I disagree with his style and some of his analysis, I certainly recognize that Moorcock's ultimate goal in Wizardry is laudable. Moorcock clearly believes that the ravaged genre can be salvaged. He clearly wants fantasy to rise above its flat, played out stereotypes. He wants authors to be more original, to love and care about their characters, to develop them into full people. In short, he wants authors to be better writers, and fans to be more critical readers and more discerning consumers. And certainly it takes no small amount of courage (or conceit) to confront the pillars of fantasy's temples, asking readers to reconsider their favorite authors and works. Moorcock surely succeeds in demanding more from the genre and challenging us to do the same. Whether you ultimately agree with him or not, he will provoke you to think – and this is reason enough to make Wizardry a worthy read.

My plans for today were: learn Oracle for the upcoming job interview on Tuesday.

What I actually did: fucked around (I'm sick so I don't go to work this week) and spent 5 hours leveling motherfucking Julius in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow cause I couldn't beat motherfucking Death. I leveled 23 levels in 4 hours by fighting Final Guards in The Pinnacle. The quickest way to kill them that I discovered is switch to Yoko and use the Ice Spell 3 times in a row. Anyway I beat Julius Mode later today, yay me! This is my favourite Metroidvania and the only one where I beat Julius/ New Game +/ Extra mode.

Yesterday was a mess for me. I went sleep @ 3 AM. First I watched Constantine on TV from 23:00 to 01:00. Then I tried to beat fucking PARANOIA in CV: DoS, Julius Mode. The laser beams kept killing me constantly :( I was switching to Alucard when Paranoia entered mirror and I was using the Bat Form but somehow those stupid beams still were getting me. I spend 2 hours just trying to beat him. Didn't level for shit, I just had to beat that motherfucking jester. Alas no dice. Today I leveled 2 levels (lol) and beat him.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right now I am eating dinner and wondering what to do with the rest of the evening... I think I'll stick to Evilbore, lol!
Sounds like a good day to me.  If I were you, I'd smoke a bowl and watch some movies :drool

http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=20278.msg497804#msg497804

basically, I have a Master server and sets of regional servers.  3 of 7 regional servers have SQL 2005.  Those 3 servers are now having errors.  It keeps telling us that we don't have permission to run backups, when we do.  We had permissions the day before and everything worked fine.  We created a job to have it backup automatically.  We forced the job to run, it did.  When it was supposed to run at it's regular time at 5am, it failed.  All the permissions are the same as our other servers (as far as i can tell).

main problem now is that our transaction log is becoming gigantic (one got to 13gb's!!!) and it won't truncate without backing up.

I'm really fucking pissed because my phone is broken again. I should be at a state park with the other psychology seniors and our faculty, but I'm at home, because my phone has the blue screen of death so the alarm didn't go off so I couldn't meet everyone at the school to go to the picnic. I'd go myself, but I'd get lost. :'(

Busy day at work but not bad. I have a very ambitious dinner planned-lamb steaks with a middle eastern style rub served with a sauce made of fresh pear and garnished with pear slices. Side will be a bulgur, apricot, and almond mixture. Should be pretty easy to pull off (I've only made this dish with once, and with quince instead of pears) before, but I'm always anxious before preparing a somewhat challenging meal.

New patch for EU: Rome went up today and fixed a lot of serious problems. Going to give it a spin after dinner if the wife isn't interested in watching a movie.

I know!

I may just go early since I already know my routine, and he just wanted to make sure I was comfortable with it.

But wherever I am at 10pmEST, I'll scream out "WAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLTTTT".
:hyper :hyper

I'll keep quiet about what happens until you see it :-*
