Perf is roughly the same, and DX10 doesn't look any better.  I am sure if I had a DX9 and 10 screen side by side, I could nitpick, but when you're playing, there's absolutely no difference.  It's definitely less than 5 frames difference.

and thus is why I play free games. After buying guild wars like a FOOL I knew it was a bad idea to pay for MMOs ever again(and then I bought the BC like a jackass).

You play Maple Story though.  :-\

AGE OF INSTALLATION

You know those 750MB worth of patches you have to install? They actually came out before the game did.  :lol I got an early copy and downloaded all the patches before the servers were even open.

Well I got to level 5. Thoughts:

+Uses the rest system like in City of Heroes, very nice. No more bread/water crap.
+I like the combat system, it added another layer of complexity to the basic melee attacks while still having special attacks
+Save points in an MMORPG? Yes please. Fuk corpse walk.
+Sorcerers are awesome so far. Shapeshifting! Flames!

-Runs kinda blah, I have most things dialed down tho, its acceptable and still looks ok
-I actually dont like the cutscene story stuff. I prefer the quick quest windows of WoW. I dont wanna have to read story.
-Enemies are pretty blah. Models are ok but kinda yawn. Conan mythos is kinda generic anyway. Of course WoW's first areas had crap monsters too!
-Loading takes a while, wtf

a screenshot of my mage, Vynitha. In her first, of hopefully many, demon forms. Of course I went fire!

Looks way better than WOW.  Blizzard needs to start updating their engine.

The devs confirmed that DX10 features aren't implemented yet so it's best to run it in DX9 for the extra performance.

I guess I'll wait a couple more days for feedback before deciding to get it or not.

Funcom is famous for their support in Anarchy Online, im sure this will be another well supported game

If WoW got an engine upgrade it would look better because it has better art, but iirc WoW engine is just the WCIII engine suped up

Someone said that it's mostly a solo game during the 1st 20 lvls.  Is that true?

Approximately how long does it take to reach lvl 20?

dont look at me, im level 5. The first 5 levels are solo then you reach a town with people. I suspect what they mean is levels 1-20 quests and play are more linear than what comes after.

How long is 5 levels?  I want to figure out it's worth $50 if I'm only playing it for a month or 2.

I wish there were some reviews already.  When's the last time a game was released without even 1 published review?

about as fast as the first 5 levels in WoW, an hour. The first 5 levels are no measure of the time spent in the game from that point on. All newer MMORPGs reward the first 5-10 levels rather quickly to get people into the mood.

Once you get to Tortage (which would be level 5-7) you can do group stuff, though there are still single player questlines to do.  I guess around level 20 there is no more SP stuff.

i will have to disagree with your generic comment.

if it seems generic now, it's only through the dissolution of the original themes through pastiches, reinterpretations and the like

what i didn't know was that this takes place after Conan has ascended to the throne.  I was hoping it would be a bit before that.

what's kind of annoying is that the friend list features don't open up until you hit level 5.  so you have to grind out then get friend features.

also, this is a small thing which can be changed, the Q and E buttons don't equal strafe.  those are mapped to Z and C while X is crouch.  I don't know if i'll even need to crouch in the future.

Basically, you're stuck on Newbie Island until you hit Lv. 20. It's pretty fun though, like I said in my original post, I prefer the early game to WoW or EQ2's. There's the opening area where you play by yourself for the first five levels, then it opens up to the main island where there are three main dungeons, one fairly large town, several small monster infested areas, and one fairly big monster island.

Even on medium, I turn world shadows off.  The world shadows are very glitchy, and they are a huge perf hit.

I really can't get this to run in a stable manner.  Even on the lowest settings it jumps between 10 and 40 so often that it's jarring.  Even outside of Tortage (which is a guaranteed 12fps regardless of my settings), it's all over the place.

I can get my computer to run Crysis mostly smoothly.  There's not much excuse for this.

When I do the night missions, the game runs considerably better, and more stable.  Makes me think there are issues with their net code, in addition to their graphics engine.

Oh, I know.  I was just expecting that if the game was rough, I'd at least be able to play it smoothly on low settings.

I got it working well.  I have it at consistent 30-50fps now (sometimes it dips to the 20s when there are lots in Tortage).  There was an issue with drivers specifically with 8800s, and I followed the fix, and now it's working great.

What's the fix?

Aside from the invisible body parts, those characters models look great, even better than most non-mmorpgs.  I might have to get the game just to check it out like a tech demo.
