Exploiting Final Fantasy XII -- Mist Knacks
« on: November 10, 2006, 11:53:20 PM »
Here's a nice tip for those who want to run through Final Fantasy XII with ease, especially bosses, and expose the huge cracks in the game's "deep" system.

In Final Fantasy XII you have 6 characters, three of which are useable at one time. Of course, this is one of the reasons why this game is bad, but I will not delve on that.

On the License Board, you have the option of giving your characters Quickenings - or Limit Breaks.

While you have three characters out, the other three do not receive XP, but do gain LP. This is invaluable.

What you want to do is get as many Quickenings as you can during the course of your game, especially on the three characters you barely touch. The shorter, the better.

With all your characters equipped with Quickenings, make sure they all have Max MP, as Quickenings erase your MP to 0 after use.

When you approach a boss, bring out your weaker three characters, and trigger a Mist Knack. From here, you start off chaining Knacks, try to do it as much as you can. When you eventually run out, swap back to your main party and trigger another Mist Knack, and chain up as much as you can.

If you can rack up enough of a chain, you can easily deal 1/2 or even 3/4 of the boss' health, or possibly destroy it in one hit.

This is similar to Final Fantasy X's "Aeon Rush" technique.

This is why Final Fantasy XII's system is broken and leaky.

what the fuck is a "mist knack" -- is it that wacky effect that goes off when you chain a bunch of quickenings?

Mist knacks are the japanese term for mist quickenings.

Its a translation thing.

Wow, thanks for explaining a basic technique!  That is how they work!  Yes, quickenings do a shit load of damage, but if you're fighting difficult hunts, quickenings alone aren't enough.  If you do the extra stuff, the quest bosses won't be much of anything, but this isn't a change from any other rpg, and at least with ffxii you have real challenge from beginning till end if you choose to take it.

Hunts are worthless and not required to finish the game. The point of this exploit is to make use of those three characters you won't bother with ever. I have no intention of doing any of the special worthless fluff, I have no time for that. Got Gears to play, babe.

Hunts are pretty lame in general, the monsters require a lot of work to kill and you get shit as reward.

The storyline bosses in the game are incredibly easy.  The only one I can think of that even requires a quickening chain is the first demon wall.  I've had a hard time with one area, when I went to Nabudis to pick up the zodiac spear and Basch was the only character around the same level as the enemies and Vaan and Ashe were around level 40 and 34 respectively.  Killing 4 level 47-48 enemies, having an oversoul spawn on top of you while two are still up, and then having a fucking helvinek spawn on you right after that is a real bitch.  For everything else I just put Basch in god mode (berserk + haste) and watch him destroy.  I have no idea why he's so ridiculously powerful.  Doing 9000 damage per hit, even with the zodiac spear, at level 52 is distinguished mentally-challenged.

Oh well, it may be an easy game but I had fun exploring dungeons and the battle system never became tedious to me.  Wait, it did a few times, fuck flying enemies.

im only 12 hours in and ive had more problems with higher level hunts than the story bosses.

ie the first judge was easier than the nidhogg.

Yeah, optional bosses are quite a bit harder from what I've experienced.  At some point (next year, maybe) I might spend some time on the harder hunts / optional dungeons / sidequests but after I beat the game (in a few hours) I'm moving on to Elite Beat Agents and Final Fantasy V.

What's the Aeon Rush technique in FFX? Is that just where you have your Aeon's charged full before you enter a boss fight? If so I didn't realize that was considered a special technique.

Besides the fact that using all your Aeons in one run pretty much obliterates any boss thrown in your way? Yeah, I'd say it's a special technique. The same goes for Mist Chains.

There's nothing special about these techniques, mist chaining and summon rushes are common sense. However apparently running away from the Wall is not. :(

Vaan does say "we have to decide whether we're going to fight or run" at the beginning of the first demon wall fight.

I just got put in the prison early in the game. No mist attacks yet. I'll be doing this though if the boss battles are hard as shit. Making stuff easy rules.

I'm loving FFXII so far...

Well in order to get the mist attacks you need to have characters climb in various directions on the license board, so dont expect mist attacks till a little later.

Well that's not hard, it just requires grinding and focused license purchasing via a license map from the strat guide or GameFaqs, but until you at least get to the mines, you arent going to get enough points to get everyone loaded on mists.

Unless youre bored enough and have no life to grind the first desert area lol.

I'm about Level 23 on average -- I only use three characters though (Vaan, Basch, Ashe)

I send my extra three characters to areas on the License Board where I know I wont go and get the Quickenings there for them. I sent Penelo to the area where Technicks are to see if they were useful, and not to my surprise, they were all garbage. So I snagged the two Quickenings and decided never to waste my points there.

Offensive spells are crap too. White magic is of course the most useful magics with Time and Green magics in a close second. The entire black magic/dark magic crap is blah.

Yeah, I am sending Ashe down that road because that is where Quickenings are! I throw a black spell out now and then when I see enemies weak against it

I moved Baltheir to the top left corner of the weapons grid because nobody will be using those weapons, then I sent Fran to the bottom left for the same reason. Easy Quickenings!

Dark is useful because of berserk.  It doubles your attack speed *and* adds extra damage to each of those attacks.

Baltheir I cant seem to keep leveled with everyone. I use Ashe as my Time/Green/White mage with a gun, and I have Fran for my thief/black/white mage stuff so its like uhhh where does Balth fit in. I dont know what to do with Panelo either lol. Aside from mists there's not THAT much you can do with characters.

It's excess work to juggle 6 characters, so I just picked three and don't bother with making them specific, just go the old-school Final Fantasy I route -- WARRIOR (Basch) THIEF (Vaan) MAGE (Ashe)

I just hope the game doesnt force me to use three I dont wanna at some point, that would suck.

I remember that elemental in the desert prior to the tomb that killed my party in one hit. I had to run away with the loser brigade and rez everyone.

The mines rock for early game grinding. Make sure you grind while you have the guest in your party lol. He has infinite HI Potions. They will get pissed the first time you leave the dungeon and re-enter it, but fuck em, levels ftw.

I made 30-40,000 gil in the mines lol.

My advice. Dont kill the Mimic Queen yet. Let friendly guest kid stick around and throw Hi-Potions at your party.  Set Fran to steal from anything on site, and just have vaan and basch kill stuff. Work the bone soldier bridge back and forth entering and re-entering the area to work the chain up. Not only will you get bone frag drops from soldiers but fran will usually steal an extra one.

By the time you leave the dungeon from a grind session you sell all the dumb crap she stole and you picked up and OMG OMG moneys. I literally bought everything in town lol.

Ok I just thought it seemed strange to call using all your charged up Aeons in a battle you're having trouble with a technique. I didn't need to go read a FAQ to figure that one out, when I came across the first boss I had trouble with I just went back fought some other fights to charge up my Aeons... once I realized how well it worked I made sure I kept them charged for boss battles just in case I had trouble.

I didn't know I was using de complicated high powered techniques! I am de smartest!

I don't really want to backtrack though. If I save, is my chain broken? It's at about 500 now lol.

What seems to help the most is LP. I'm just filling out the top board boosting my attack and magic stuff. I'll leave the bottom board for when I can actually buy some good weapons.

Hmm the chain stops at 999. I went back and sold 99 bones and 99 dark stones and saved. I'll try and stock up on loot again before making my way through. My main party is all at 25 and I have most of the augments I wanted filled on the top board, so hopefully that puts me in a good spot for the rest of the game.
