first part looked like a proper mass effect (visually), don't know about the flying and ufo though.

there is also this:

Quote
The Gears of War influence is pretty straightforward, with the focus on taking cover -- even though it's implemented vertically here -- and the game's use of the Unreal Engine for its visuals. But a more surprising influence comes from Sony's Shadow of the Colossus, which not only is one of the best-reviewed games in recent memory but also is seemingly one of the least likely to inspire a shooter, since it's all about taking down giant beasts in a slow and methodical fashion. As it turns out, Dark Void will have bosses much like those in Sony's game. "The idea there is that you're going to use your jetpack to latch on to these things and kind of scale them," Kujawa says. "It's almost like pecking at this giant boss." And much like in Shadow of the Colossus, there will be parts of these fights where you'll need to hold down a button to keep the bosses from bucking you off.

How are the controls?

This game is gonna tank.

The combat sort of feels like Gears of War meets Mass Effect with Gears being the high end of the scale and Mass Effect being the low end. The problem is it feels close to the low end ala Mass Effect.

Finished it. That is one god awful demo. I'm sort of shocked they put it out there. This is the sort of game you just put out there without a demo because the demo is only going to turn off people.

It looks ugly.
The combat plays like Mass Effect without the benefit of the RPG stuff or biotic powers (at least in the demo. May you get things like that later or something)
The flying bits are okay... I guess.... But nothing you would actually go out of your way to buy a game for.

At its core there clearly was the genesis of an idea of combining an Iron man type flying experience with a gears of war shooter with you being able to swap between roles on the fly. Which isn't a bad idea. But the execution is weak on both sides of that equation here at least in what the demo presents.

Demo was pretty weak.  It actually reminded me of Dark Sector (not just because of the game) where it seems competent but has a huge gimmick that's supposed to add to the appeal.  Problem with Dark Void is that the flying doesn't feel very good.  It feels like you're moving the reticule instead of the character/ship.  When I play Warhawk, or even recently Crimson Skies on the Xbox, I didn't have this problem.  It just doesn't feel fluid enough.  The camera is way too close to you, and the transition from flying to hovering to fighting on the ground doesn't feel right.  On foot shooting is just the standard Gears clone stuff; I wouldn't compare it to Mass Effect because Dark Void could pass as a shooter, just a very average one.  Again, it has the neat gimmick that you can jump up really high to shoot enemies, but there is no thrill to doing that because it takes way too many shots to kill an enemy on foot.  If you think you can pull off cool stunts like flying through hallways on your jetpack, you can't.  And yeah, the game is pretty ugly.  It's cartoon-y but it also has that weird ugly quality bad UE3 games have (is this even UE3?)

Meh. I figured they would have at least done good on the flying stuff, and the presentation. Crimson Skies is pretty damned awesome, but maybe these guys had little to do with that.

On the other hand, I have a feeling we will be reading a bitter post mortem from a jilted developer soon enough.

some controls and design doesn't even make sense, like if you are basing the game around hovering and flying as the main gimmick, have the left trigger be jump/hover/boost instead of 'A' and design shooting mechanics based him fire and not taking aim.  It's not like hovering has you locked in the air since you constantly need to press A to boost up a bit, which means you have to stop aiming.  And for the stunts, they kept the same archaic controls as the Xbox Crimson Skies where you click in the right analog and move both analog sticks in a single direction.  Why? that's so unnecessary, especially when you have more shoulder buttons.  The right bumper doesn't even serve a purpose, it like, just drops the camera in the air for you to watch yourself flying around or something? at least the left one locks your view onto the nearest enemy.

The demo didn't even let you try out that vertical cover stuff, which actually looked to be the worst part of it.

The default controls and button layouts were definitely odd. I had no expectations going in so for me its just another bad to average game but it just felt and looked cheap.

This is the sort of game that may have been passable at launch or shortly afterwards but not now.

I'm going with "trying to make themselves look good by sabotaging associated western devs" at this point. GRIN made some decent games, and then GRIN met Crapcom.

The problem with GRIN was GRIN. They cranked out a shitload of mediocre games in a short time and paid the price.

As far as Dark Void, its no secret that Japanese devs have a hard time overseeing American projects from B level teams (and vice versa for that matter). This happens to a lot of them. Its not just Capcom.

I liked Bionic Commando for the most part.  The mechanics of that game were solid, rewarded skillful playing, and it was really fun to get a nice groove to the swinging and combat.  Also, Bionic Commando Rearmed was really good.

I don't understand what they (Capcom or Airtight) were thinking here. Even if the retail game has some strong qualities, there is just no way anyone is going to be playing that shitty shit shit demo and consider it a must-have. I like Crimson Skies so there's some nostalgic quality to the flying, but it hasn't been improved upon, has it? It's just Crimson Skies with barely updated graphics, a jetpack that should feel more agile than a double decker aircraft yet doesn't, and uninspired ground combat. Fucking meh. Unless reviews reveal something else, I guess this is a distant rental.

I got more entertainment out of the Alien Breed demo, and that's just not right.

I found it hilarious how the character complains they were working on something all night (who knows what?) and then all of a sudden he just notices a giant jetpack laying in the middle of the room.

He's like,"What that?!"

When it's so huge you should notice right when you walk into the room.

So instead of working on non-god knows what, he goes out to blow up a bunch of random planes and shit.

It's like,"what?"

Also: the graphics remind me of the xbox :lol

It was still pretty hot, though. It's not their fault that gamers (and gaming news media) have sacrificed short term recollection for astonishing long term nostalgic memory/dependency. Or something.
