So, Edge decided to comment on what it "could or should" have been? That's always a dodgy approach, and not a very useful one either. I remember really growing to dislike critics for their Fable reviews some years back; if you can't stick to reviewing the actual game, the one that is available for people to actually buy, and instead go on about phantom qualities, then you really shouldn't be behind that particular buyer's guide.

Those 90 minute cut-scenes, why did the EGM dude who posts on NeoGAF claim that it wasn't true then? If it is, then god damn. Flies in the face of this:

I enjoyed MGS2 a great deal, although go back and forth on it when I look back at it. I'm scared of MGS3: started the first level and the micro-management eating/hunting mechanic made me put it away as fast as possible. I can't stand stuff like that, I just can't. It's game-breaking for me, just like the one-save system in Dead Rising.

The message with MGS4 was that it'd scrub off some of the rough edges to reach beyond the hardcore fans: controls and obtrusive japanese complex design for the sake of complexity, super weird shit, cut scenes, codecs. But after playing MGO I don't have much faith in the controls and a polished/stream-lined interface. From reports cut scenes seem to be more, not less.
I really want to get into it.

I haven't heard of a hunger system in this game. It sounds as though its going to play like MGS2 in regards to just focusing on Stealth/Shooting with the addidtion of CQC. Also, what Edge states about the controls is interesting. Are the MGO controls exactly the same as its going to be in the Offline game?

I really want to get into it.

Yeah, it definitely reads like fan service more than anything, and then catering to, at least for me, the wrong objects of the fan adoration. It's so attractive in so many ways, but as of right now, it'd appear as if it's less approachable than even I had expected.

In all honesty though, if any game is going to go "balls to the wall" fanservice, it should be the game that finishes off the series. Its like one big Hideo goodbye to Snake.

MGS4 is the 7th game in the Metal Gear series, and the one that supposedly wraps things up. I don't see how it couldn't be heavy fanservice at this point.

Right. Although I suppose this confirms once and for all that MGS really is all about poorly directed cinema. I expected there to be lots of lengthy cutscenes, but this is definitely pushing it. Who knows though, maybe they really needed all that time to tell the story, but it seems excessive, and not a good mark on Kojima as a director.

it is different in terms of gameplay and controls. i'm not sure what you're expect from the story or the amount of cutscenes when this is snake's final game and it's wrapping everything up.

and gamepro and ttp on gaf have said that there aren't any 90 minute cutscenes. don't really know who to believe anymore at this point, though ttp is pretty trustworthy.

He is, which makes the whole complaint sound dodgy. And there was also an EGM guy who confirmed that there were no such cutscenes in the game. I guess timing might be relative to ones enjoyment of it, but I'd expect some honest information from a buyer's guide.

That shit freaked me out. I wasn't expecting the codec freakout. This was when I wasn't on the Internet so I was completely blacked out to everything about the game. I'm sorta the same with MGS4.

I just realized that I beat every Metal Gear game except for the original two. Are they any good? I think I have them on my MGS3: Subsistence disc.

Edit: I forgot about Portable Ops and that Acid bullshit. The GBC game was my first Metal Gear game.

Metal Gear 1 is okay. Metal Gear 2 is MGS1 in 2d. It's the template for all MGS games. Must play.
