Hold it right there, pal!  Read what this is all about.  You know what this sounds similar to? Goddamn Fileplanet! even PC isn't totally escapable from this bullshit.

and this is a step in the wrong direction.  Only positive is that it isn't required to play online or anything like that, but early content and things like that for subscribers is lame.  Fuck exclusive demos for people who pay for the privilege!

I'd rather pay for the 1upshow than single-console PR previews.

This is a stupid idea, but at least it's not essential content.

Wait, the beta, exclusive access to demos and dlc stuff is kinda scary. I assumed this was only a show.

It's weird, I'd (unhappily) pay for Live because I want to play online. Qore sucks because I don't want to pay for demos and PR shit and I got online for free so there's no reason.

Oh god, this is distinguished mentally-challenged.

Yeah it is but it's not different from IGN Subscription, GameSpot complete, Fileplanet or Xbox Live Gold.

And GameStops or EBs "exclusive" content for PC games.
Which are all shitty. I'd only pay for Xbox live because it provides online play and has some great features. I'd never pay for video content and demos alone. There's no point, I'd rather go to gamersyde and gametrailers than get an IGN or Gamespot subscription (which are multiplatform)

The most interesting part about it is getting into betas just by joining it.  Still bad, but if you subscribe and you are guaranteed access  into a beta, then that could be pretty cool.  I didn't get into the Warhawk beta months ago, so if joining this makes sure I get into every beta from here on out, that is at least a bit more worth it.

I don't like the sound of exclusive demos.  It can either be bad like XBL is where they cut off demos from nonpaying costumers for a week or so, or it could be horrible where the nonpaying people will never get the demos.

I'll just hope for a table of contents to make sure it is worth the money.

I know. Just like paying for online on the PS3 would be welcomed as a chance to help alleviate the bandwidth cost incurred by the dozens and dozens of titles with dedicated servers.  :punch

Paying for promotional horsepucky, what a crock.  I can only hope that this a test run for a Pay-To-Play PSN system and that it fails miserably.

And besides, wasn't some of this integration and greater development access supposed to be included in Home?

XBL offers a large amount of benefits over PSN, free or not. Obviously it takes payments to get a company to actually put together some cohesive online for a console.

And it's not just friend lists and messaging, and guaranteed private games and voice chat, its also having a constant stream of downloadable games with guaranteed demos, and pretty much everything else that's being offered by this Sony package. And most of it trickles down to Silver users too.

Thinking out loud here...

Why would a published want its ads (demos included) to be hidden behind a pay service?

Answer: Because anyone dumb enough to pay for this is a die-hard fanboy, and therefore capable of generating positive buzz. This can only be enhanced by the 'I have it and you don't' factor.

I got my 13 months of XBL for $25, and another 13 months for $38.

I'm getting way fucking more for my dollar than on PSN. The PS Store is barren, PSN itself lacks a bevy of basic features, individual games are even worse when it comes to features, and I can't expect demos. Getting High Velocity Bowling themes for free doesn't fix these problems. Or even playing online for free but having to IM my friend with a fucking password to join my CAC game, or feeling like I'm playing alone in Warhawk because no one uses their headset, or feeling like I shouldn't even bother playing because none of my friends play and if they did I wouldn't know they were.

btw - every time I'm reminded of Silvers' one week delay for demos I tear MS a new one. It's fucking dunderheaded and total bullshit to the base.

They don't quite match up.

Inside Xbox = Qore

would be like saying:

PSN = XBL (or XBL = Steam)

XBL offers a large amount of benefits over PSN, free or not. Obviously it takes payments to get a company to actually put together some cohesive online for a console.

The thing that pisses me off the most regarding Xbox Live is that while the 360 does have its shit together and there are some aspects that are great and certainly better than PSN, back on the regular Xbox the online service was about as complex as the Wii (ok, maybe not, but PS3 is way ahead of it) and they still charged you.  Whatever features they do have for Gold users, the thing they keep pushing is that if you want to play online you have to pay.

I guess you can't read because we have not been doing the same thing. I actually have a featureset that makes playing online worthwhile while my PS3 plays movies. Not to mention having a reason to check the store more than once every 2 months and shit like demos that even Silver accounts get to enjoy but which are probably funded by Golds.

Bullshit, dude. I've been a XBL subscriber since the service launched with Ghost Recon back in the day, and I still sing the praises of the free online play that the PSN provides. When I play online, I do so because it's a different type of gaming, not because of any community feel, and I doubt I'm the only one with that mindset. Hell, you are one of four people on my friend's list at this point. I understand the value of XBL to those who value the community features, but it's not appealing to everyone.

Yea, I'm sure there are lots of casual gamers who just want to connect online. It's not worth it for me if I can't play with people I know, I have no interest in playing with a bunch of strangers who might as well be bots.

Do you also have a reason why having more than 5 worthwhile downloadable games is a bad thing? How about renting movies and TV shows? Having organized and commonplace demos? No?

I never said that PSN wasn't right for anyone, someone who only plays 1 or 2 online titles per year and doesn't really care can obviously have a good time with it. It's what I'd recommend to my casual, PS2-only friends. But we are all actual gamers...

Renting movies in shitty quality is shit, and renting TV shows is something only really fat or fatminded idiots do, so that I can live without. I'm not going to defend the crap line-up of the PSN though; I already ribbed on the slim line-up so I've covered that. I'm strictly talking about playing games online, which works in pretty much the same way as I've grown accustomed to on PC, including the part about not having to commit to a paid subscription service to play. And unsurprisingly, my Steam friends list is about as slim as my PSN list.

The thread became interesting when it was rationalized as "Well, this is just like buying a magazine!" and "These will be demos devs would not have created otherwise so we should support this."

Yes, obviously if you don't like playing with people you know a PSP-level online system is sufficient and a premium is not worth it.

The point of this discussion is that XBL costs $25 more than this program (assuming you ignore the constant discounts on resub cards) and offers a laundry list of tangible benefits over it, and many of these benefits trickle down to non-paying users.

Fuck, Silver gives you more demos than this will, and you can download video walkthroughs and dev interviews for pretty much any major title I've looked at. This service is distinguished mentally-challenged, even if XBL is not for everyone.

I'm going to have to disagree with that.  I've only d'loaded a movie twice on Live, but both times it looked pretty damn good on my 50' Samsung.  Maybe not blu-ray good, but hell no one expects that at this point.

Hell, it looked shitloads better than what most of Comcast's HD channels look like, and people pay out the ass for that.

It's basically like a sony only 1up show that you pay for. I'm not seeing the big deal here. You don't have to buy it and it doesn't help your gameplay any, so it's not really an answer to XBL gold. More Evilbore Xfag spin bullshit.

edit: okay, there's some DLC involved, but still, since I really didn't see a price there for IT, just the show, at that price it's a fucking steal.
