Civilization Revolution demo is up!
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:16:25 AM »
360 now, PSN later this afternoon.  I don't care if it's some dumbed down console version, the Civ whore that lives inside me makes this an instant purchase.

Go download it so I can read some impressions while I'm at work. :(

Edit- eek.  Didn't see the other thread.

nah let's make this thread about the CivRev demo. Here's my impressions of it:

As someone who has been playing Civ regularly for almost a decade and a half now (currently I play BTS on Emperor difficultly with about a 75-80% win rate), I can say after playing the demo that the game is without a doubt "Civ". The interface works well with the controller and is very intuitive, and most of the game mechanics seem very similar. I never felt once that the game was any less of a Civ game than say Civ4 all because I couldn't chop out Stonehenge or whip out an axeman rush.

Honestly, the only complaint I had about the demo was that I don't fully understand CivRev's specific ruleset vis-ŕ-vis Civ4's. But that's just a matter of playtime and experimentation/research into the ruleset, and certianly it won't be as jarring as the Civ3->Civ4 transition.

Honestly, my only real complaint is that getting to the Civilopedia takes some DVD-ROM access and is a bit slow. Thankfully, after a few games, I've mostly got everything memorized and swapping to it constantly isn't necessary.

I can't wait to try this when I get home. I still play BTS almost every day.

Did Frag just approve a console game?

But it's not running off the DVD, it's a demo on the HDD?

Yeah I can say I approve of this. I don't hate all console games! Just console gaming in general, and that's mainly because good strategy gaming on consoles is damn near impossible to find.

Oh and good point about the HDD, either way the Civilopedia felt sluggish to bring up. Not a huge deal though.

Well, it is a demo, it could be an early build of sorts.

Just took some time to sit down and actually play the demo. Before, I tried numerous times but couldn't work out the controls so I instantly shut it off. Now I read the control page and saw how it all worked and I was hooked, 2 hours flew by. I heard of Civ before, but it looked incredibly daunting. I really like the concept that I was shown in this demo. I like how you don't have to engage in combat, somehow in strategy games I'm not really comfortable with the notion that my creations can be attacked. Although I felt pretty powerful in this demo and basically rushed a lot of the cities, MAKE WAR NOT PEACE, but that's probably due to the easy difficulty of the demo.

I'm interested in Civ 4 now because it sound so epic and cool.

i liked the rev demo so i tried out civ4.  a little more complex but not a huge stretch from the console game.  if you liked the rev demo, you'll probably like civ4.
