I agree there. But when it comes to stuff like FFXII all I see are shitty copy pasta environments which are flat out boring.
No jrpg has ever topped the art design of FFVII-X for me, and the pre rendered bgs are a part of the reason for that.
I agree with you on that. I played a lot of JRPGs during the SNES and PSX days and I really loved them, but after that I've really cooled off to genre. Oh, I still play some of them now and again, yet I can't help but feel that a certain charm is missing that used to be there and I'm not nearly as excited about the genre as I was back then. I don't know if it's the change from largely prerendered backgrounds or just a lack of newness or what.
By the way, download the widescreen patch for Planescape: Torment and crank it up to high resolution. Looks absolutely amazing [it's NINE years old!!] and every location is just so full of life and detail, certainly doesn't hurt that the writing is second to none in the videogame world.
