HULK SMASH!!!
« on: June 14, 2008, 04:12:41 AM »
GameStop SMs went out and saw this tonight.  It was totally fun and shot a lot better than Iron Man.  The climax was the best comic book fight filmed on screen.  Good shit.

So it makes up for that 'climax' in the first one? Admittedly I still kind of like the first HULK movie so fuk off

I don't hate Ang Lee's film, but this really feels like a big budget version of the 70s television series - which I loved as a kid.  There's a ton of imagery lifted from the television show, including some classic music cues.  You can tell Ed Norton really loved the television show.

But - yeah! - the climax puts the original Hulk film to shame.  It puts every comic book film to shame.  These two huge monsters duke it out for like twenty minutes and it's totally awesome.  It doesn't pull any punches and revels in its comic book roots, which is something a lot of adaptations try to shake loose from but then force a phoney third act climax (I'm looking at you, Spider-Man!).

The guy who did this is the guy who did The Transporter and I guess that fits.  He's good at kinetic, fast paced action sequences.

Neat cameo from a recent Marvel film got a standing ovation.

Cinematography was really good too.  Looks much more cinematic than Iron Man, which I felt looked flat.

Several great .gifs can be stolen from this flick and used as Internet memes.  I won't spoil scenes, but there's a few, "O SNAP!" moments that totally satisfy that inner child that just wants to beat the shit out of folks that are assholes.

The Bourne Hulkery.

Guy participating in a government experiment acquires dangerous abilities and goes AWOL.  For the first half of the movie he flees them through exotic urban settings but for the climax he takes the fight to them.  Intermittently he worries about endangering the woman he loves.

I liked it.  Really solid crowd-pleaser of an action movie.

Yeah, that's a fair comparison.  I even thought the same early on. :lol

But really, that's more in line with The Fugitive-esque narrative of the television show than the Bourne flicks.

Never saw the TV show.  I did pick up on Lou Ferrigno's cameo when it happened (also Omar Little's breakout performance as Harlem Bystander) though.

Was this movie an official reset, or was the opening credits montage meant to represent more or less the events of the first, discarded movie?  I didn't see that one either.

It was pretty much a reset.  The opening credits montage was a lot of imagery lifted from the television show and comic books (a lot of stuff felt very Bruce Jones).  There was really nothing from Ang Lee's film.

Lou Ferrigno was also the voice of the Hulk.  That was pretty awesome.

I stand by my statement!

It's actually better than Iron Man, in my opinion.  Iron Man gave us a memorable character, but an uneven movie and a dull climax (the assault on the terrorists was the best part of the flick).  Hulk gives us a fun, exciting flick - but the character moments are thin.

That's about it.

I really hope it does well at the box office.  I'm a little worried people might have been too put off by Ang Lee's Hulk to go see this.  I'm going tonight and expect to be completely blown away in every regard.  All of the impressions I'm hearing make it sound like an absolute tour-de-force of action and entertainment.  The only naysayers are the taco elitist types that should all just rot in hell.  Seriously, how miserable and bitter must you be to not enjoy action flicks like this.  I just wanna curb every single one of them.  There's a few in the GAF thread.

it actually wasn't that bad. it was a fun movie. but i thought the last fight was pretty lame. i thought the action set at the university was pretty awesome.

"hulk smash" was distinguished mentally-challenged. it's pretty cringe worthy when the hulk says stuff. it was dumb in the comics too.

and yeah, the scientist dude is a terrible actor.

Going in to Iron Man I didn't know who was playing Obadiah Stane, and going by the voice I figured it was William Hurt behind the beard.  Whoops.

Now I get to see a comic book movie with William Hurt as the bad guy and he doesn't have much to do.  None of the actors did, especially Tyler.  It's okay because the action and momentum keep up for almost all the movie, but the character side was really thin.

you just know that the scientist is going to be a villain in the avengers sequel though.  I don't think he'll be a very great villain but I might be wrong and the writers might have a big elaborate plan for them all.

compared to Iron Man, it's a better movie overall but RDJ was better at playing Iron Man than Norton was at playing the Hulk.  They both will obviously have sequels (do not read the above if you have not seen the Hulk movie) so I hope they fix the flaws that each movie had.  both of them were good though so it's not a bad summer for the comic book movies.  TDK will suck probably but that's because of Bale and Nolan's style with batman so I'll just not watch that.

Was a fun movie. I laughed at Stan Lee getting Gamma Ray poisoning but me laughing at that probably ruined my chance with any hot chick that probably heard me in the theater.

Its obviously not going to get praised for anything other than being a great popcorn flick but the "great popcorn flick" defense is the equal "it looks better in motion" defense for videogames. I still like Iron Man much better.

Kudos to them for taking the scene that was obviously supposed to be "after the closing credits" and just putting it at the end of the damned movie.

That said though, all this Avengers/Nick Fury/SHIELD stuff seems like a fun fanboy handjob, but I get the sense that if all these characters were ever combined into one film then it'd be pretty goofy.  I really have no desire to see superhero crossover flicks.

Considering that this movie had a worse opening than its awful predecessor, I don't think a sequel is guaranteed at all.  I was thinking that they could overcome public perception with a spectacular marketing blitz, but it looks like Ang Lee really poisoned the franchise.

So the studio really ok'ed a 150 million budget with the expectation that the movie was not going to perform any better than Ang Lee's Hulk?

First weekend?  No.  Universal/Marvel was expecting $40 million or so.

You don't think they take into account the baggage from a previous movie?  Warner Bros. did the same thing when the first weekend totals for Batman Begins came in.  It wasn't even the biggest opening weekend for a Batman film.

These films are more about merchandising that box office totals to begin with.  Hence the fact why we have a Hulk sequel/reboot to begin with after an underwhelming first entry.

They're making a Capt. America movie though so they probably didn't want to spoil for non-nerds that he fights in WWII and falls into ice only to be thawed out like 50 years later.
