Let us discuss the PSTriple.
« on: June 19, 2008, 08:44:45 AM »
Since so many of us recently got a PS3,I'm surprised to see not a thread about the PS3 itself. So here it is.

1:Online/Firmware update was ridiculously long.

2:You have to INSTALL DEMOS. This is distinguished mentally-challenged.

3:The PS Store is well designed but a little too much blue for my taste. That wallet thing is cool though.

4:Setting up online for the PSN was a lot easier than the Xbox Live. Easy as connecting the broadband cable to the back of the PS3,when I was connecting for XBL,I did a lot of back and forth.

5:My downloads started back instantly as I turned back on the PS3(Which is lighting fast) I know the 360 does this but it's neat to see the KB/MB rising.

It's always quite exciting whenever I get a new system. Discuss.

Totally agree with you on the firmware updates and the awful, awful concept of installing demos. What demos/PSN exclusive games have you downloaded?

It's just that X360 automatically installs demo's, otherwise it's basically the same.

New firmware needs automatic install.

I have download demos for Super Stardust HD,Genji,Folksoul, and DMC4. I'm waiting for Dark Sector to finish,so I can download Uncharted,Heavenly Sword and Ratchet. SSHD is awesome.

Cons
Too much and for too long delayed stuff, from promised essential firmware features to games
PSN friendlist functionality is crap, I hardly use because it's so limited. Have to go directly to my friendlist to find who's online. Hard to see who's playing what and whether I can join their session. --> don't feel like there's a community
PS3 fanboys
No ingame-xmb
PSN store is too picture heavy, takes too much time to find what I'm looking for and to download the list. (My connection is 2 megabyte/s down) It looks nice and works better than the previous store, but it's still too cumbersome.
XMB is fast and sleek, but takes too much time to wade through and find what you want because it uses so little screen real estate (OTOH this also makes it look nice and cool)
After a while your game folder and video folders become messy. I want to make sub folders/categorize.
Still not an exclusive game I'm "in love" with.
Triggers and sticks, button placement of Dualshock 3
Too much installing (demos, games, etc)

Pros:
Boots fast
Silent
Blu-ray
XMB + wallpaper looks nice on my 1080p HD TV
Movie functionality and in-movie xmb is great (lots of options), except the way it handles a networked computer. On 360 it connects really fast to my PC and directly displays the folder I have shared, with PS3 I have to browse through a lot of folders)
Standard HDD, upgradeable
Sensible DRM concerning copying music and videos to the HDD and whatnot
Wireless
Real currency on PSN store, no space bucks.
Not always 1:1 dollar-to-euro conversion on the PSN store.

I haven't turned mine on since October. I grabbed one last summer since they were getting rid of the hardware BC and that's like the system's best feature. Between 360 and PC, that's as much time as I want to give to gaming. But one of these years, when the only-on-PS3 catalog builds up to a respectable level and most of the software has been marked down to under $20, I'm gonna buy lots of games for it and have myself a PS3 orgy. 2011 or so.  :gloomy

After a while your game folder and video folders become messy. I want to make sub folders/categorize.

I was bitching about this quite a bit, until I realized that you can actually do this with videos, by editing the "Album" category of the videos and then sorting by album. The fact that it wasn't really apparent how to achieve this is just another of the PS3's less than user friendly quirks. Fast, expandable and generally slick, but too much of the functionality is up to the user to discover.

1. The last firmware update was mad quickz

2. All the installs suck shit. When I was gamesharing yesterday, I had to keep backing out of the Store to install stuff as it was downloading, because it'd say "too many uninstalled files, cannot download." So I'd have to back out, take 2 minutes to install High Velocity Bowling and then install each of its damn DLC characters separately, before I could even queue up more downloads in the store. What?

Also, the music player fucking owns the 360 one. That planet earth visualizer is fucking AWESOME.

Getting album info = WOWSEOME

Too bad it won't recognize my existing playlists and PS3 playlists cap off at like 200 songs. And it won't acknowledge the folders I had on my HDD, which isn't a huge deal for music but makes the picture section fucking useless.

PC will totally kill it.

A few titles work flawlessly on my PC and I just use my HDTV as my monitor in those cases to play with my 360 controller.  I wish I knew how to use my old now useless sixaxis on Vista.

And the PS3 automatically installs games if you don't do background downloading.  The problem with doing auto-install with background downloading is that it would interrupt what you were doing to install it.  The reason the 360 doesn't have this issue is because the games don't really need to install, it is more drag and drop.  Also, I think some demos on the 360 are larger than the PS3 versions, so that may be something else (but I don't think this is the case for all of them, so never mind).

Also, I think I am the only person who actually really likes the Dual Shock 3 and think it is on par with the 360 controller.  Although I did get those triggers you attach which makes L2/R2 10000 times better (Sony should have done this from the start).  And when I say they are on par, I mean that while playing 3D games with the 360 controller is better, the DS3 just destroys it when it comes to 2D games, so it balances out for me.  The other thing that it seems like everyone is opposite with me on is the analog sticks.  The PS2 analog sticks were trash, but the sixaxis and ds3 analog sticks are great.  I like that they aren't so still because when I turn sensitivity up, I can only slightly move the stick and only need to put a tiny bit of pressure.  I think the 360 sticks are too stiff and wish there was a balance between the two.  I still think the Xbox S controller is the best controller out there (all around I mean; the Saturn pad kills it for 2D).  I wish I could use that with my 360.

My PC is quite good, but it still won't run all games perfectly.  It is actually really weird.  Games like R.A.D run like shit despite them looking bad graphically, but then other games like Kingdom Hearts run smooth.

How good of a computer do you need for the PS2 emulator(s)?

I'm not sure about all the basics.  I also don't feel like figuring out all my specs, but Vista has my computer as 5.7 in the performance thing.  I don't know if that is good or bad.

With each new update of the emulator or the plugins, speed usually increases a lot.  I have to go check to see if there are any updates out now.

Well, found specs anyway while looking to see if it was updated or not.

Minimal Specs:
AMD 64 or Intel Pentium 4 (VM Build will not work with non SSE2 CPU's)
512MB of RAM
Pixel Shader 2.0 supporting card

Recommended Specs: (For reasonable performance in many games, but not all)
AMD64 X2 or Intel Conroe E6600+ (Multi Threading is supported in PCSX2)
512-1024MB of RAM (more RAM allows for VM mode to be stable)
Pixel Shader 2.0 supporting card (recommended GeForce 6600-8800 or equivalent ATi card)

Possible Ideal Specs:
64bit OS such as Vista or winXP64, to allow for future support of 64bit recompilers.
Future AMD or Intel Quad Core maybe needed, but currently the support of 4 threads is not handled by PCSX2, and the effect of threading out EE / VU is not yet known.
We don't forsee you requiring a GPU more powerful than the current generation of cards, up to and including the nVidia GeForce 8800.

I also love how downloading a game on PSN gives you the crustiest version of it, so as soon as you boot it up you have to update it.

As a bonus, instead of just patching the games the entire fucking file is re-downloaded all over again.

It's great as a DVD upscaler and Blu-ray player. The region protection really, really sucks, seeing that I have hundreds of movies in different formats, and now I can only play 1/3 of my movie collection with it.

Its media center capabilities are acceptable but nothing special. (It can't even play the VCD mpeg file format.)

Its Earth visualizer is nothing special. I think the Wii's use of the globe for the weather and news channels are much more appropriate. I would rather have seen Winamp- or WM-like visuals.

The fact you have to store your media in specific folders is idiotic. It should be able to just read the contents in your folder and determine what format type it is.

Downloading and installing demos is stupid, especially for an "unpiratable" format - it's not like the system needs to check for authenticity or anything.

The game selection doesn't cut it for me now. Shallow and slim for my pickings.

Other than that, it's alright. At least the lady of the house doesn't object. It's a solid piece of hardware, if otherwise unspectacular.

When I finally upgraded my firmware two weeks ago, this was one of the first things I checked out after hearing how "amazing" it was. Needless to say, when I need my spinning globe fix, I'll watch Planet Earth. It was cool for a bit, but it must have been one slow-ass month for the fanboys to have gotten that riled up over it.

Coming from one of the greatest ex-Sony fanboys the Internet has ever seen, I believe my opinion has some weight.  All in all I consider the PS3 an absolute disaster.  The fact that it released a year later than the 360 and didn't trounce it on the visual front and didn't have basic features like in-game messaging out of the box is just unacceptable.  Even when in-game XMB eventually gets added (two fucking years after the fact), I'm certain it won't be as robust as 360's, meaning you won't be able to cross-game invite, or join a friend's game in progress from your dashboard, or even have global voice chat.  Looking at the games line-up, all I see is disappointment after disappointment.  So many PS3 exclusives were hyped to no end only to turn out average or worse, and decent games get hyped to AAA GOTY OMG quality when they're really just, well, decent.  Unless you absolutely have to play MGS4 or can't live without Blu-ray, there's really no reason to own a PS3 over a 360.  Also, the fact that multi-platform ports are consistently inferior on a console that released a year later than its competition is downright pathetic.  Deadmeat was right after all -- budget GPU.  Look at last gen!  Xbox released after the PS2 and multi-platform games were much improved over the PS2 versions.  Not only that, but the Xbox exclusives completely obliterated PS2 exclusives.  Nothing on PS2 could touch games like Ninja Gaiden, Rallisport Challenge 2, Riddick, and many more.  Yet with the PS3, exclusives are neck and neck with 360, a lot of the times looking worse. This is absolutely unacceptable for a console that released a year later than its competition.  The PS3, as a whole, is an utter disaster.

Considering that you're this weird dude who can't seem to even approach being neutral and instead has to be hardcore fan/hater in some direction, I'd say that no, your opinion doesn't hold much weight. Praising one product over the other only to change your tune when you actually get some experience with that other product, that's just lame. It reeks, really.

When I finally upgraded my firmware two weeks ago, this was one of the first things I checked out after hearing how "amazing" it was. It's a nice image, and that's about it. It's funny though, it goes really well with the Halo OST.

The PS3, as a whole, is an utter disaster.

As a whole perhaps, bu bu bu bu bu... it's a great Blu-ray player and DVD upscaler!  :punch

That's all I use it for anyhow...  :-\

Stop the bullshit.  Talk games or get the fuck out.

I thought it was established that the PS3 didn't have many games, so that sort of complicates things.

Feel free to talk games, troll games, dis games, whatever.  Just don't do it to other posters (unless they're asking for it.   ;))  Chow Chow didn't post anything to get that kind of response.

Get some new material already, fossil.

Although, I could use some vicodin. Expect a Zelda TP praise thread in 2 hours.
