Truth telling time: Gears of War isn't very good.
« on: November 14, 2006, 11:54:44 AM »
The controls are clunky and imprecise, the color palette makes Quake look vibrant, and the gameplay's is all about memorizing scripted sequences (ie which direction the Locusts will come from next).  The crappy aiming is reminiscent of Metroid Prime (holding down a shoulder button to free aim?  No thanks), and the one button cover mechanic always seems like its either too touchy or not responsive enough.  It rarely feels just right because areas are either covered in cover points (gee, guess where the next sripted wave will come from?), or not enough (I was holding the button to run through an area and I kept getting caught and covering on the sparse cover points - I think the game figured if I was holding down the button, I wanted to cover on the nearest thing, even if it were 5 feet away).  There is no AI to be spoken of.  Enemie pop and shoot at you for a few seconds then just do a zig zag rush.  Environmental interaction is zero.  Throwing grenades sucks shit.  This game sucks, and if it weren't getting hyped for the past year and a half, it would've gotten a 6, and 2 of those points would've been on the basis of it's coop and graphics.

The game. is. the. pits.

Controls are fine.

The sequence of Emergence Holes are randomized. I know this from replaying that first courtyard in Act 1. And once they climb out of a hole, they operate on their own AI tactics.

Aiming is fine, this isn't an FPS.

Learn to use cover properly.

I've never accidentally snagged on Cover when roadie running, learn to aim your character.

The enemies don't just duck and pop (but that's obviously important, it's the fucking basis of the game), they flank you, throw grenades with precision, press forward intelligently. Especially on Insane.

Grenades are fine, learn to use them. Especially blind throwing.

Did you play on Casual or Hardcore?

Looks kinda stop n pop boring with lame non-destructable environments.

I think there's been such a lack of good 360 games the past few months you will find owners making allowances for mediocre efforts to either validate their purchases or just prove to everyone the whole wide intarweb that they didnt fall for hype, its really 'that good'.

Whatever, I own a 360 and do nothing but stream media and watch dvds on it. At most ill pick up Viva Pinata cause that at least sounds fun. If I want rehash gameplay with a new coat of paint ill pick up a better effort on the PC lol.

If they were destructable, you'd lose the 'cover playground' effect of the game. It'd be shit if a few grenades would turn a maze of cover into a big open field. It doesn't look super exciting in videos, but it's certainly an experience to be played.

I've only had a 360 for a month and a half, and I've been playing Chromehounds, Dead Rising, and Saint's Row nonstop. I don't need to buff up some random new game to justify my purchase, as I've been having a blast with it. Gears of War is fucking great. You don't get near-unanimous positive impressions from gamers and critics alike just to prove it's "that good."

What gameplay is Gears rehashing? Did you really play Winback that much?

But oh wait, the matchmaking system usually made the games pretty competitive...

I highly disagree. First off, the controls are perfect. Second there is plenty of color in this game if you had played it more then a few hours.

Casual mode= dumbshit AI, you might as well not be playing.
Hardcore/Insane mode = Enemies will flank you, and running up to them will get you shot in the face.

Yes your squadmates can die often, but not permanently so its really no big deal. Plus if you want you can play lag free co-op online.

As for the weapons, I'd say they are all perfectly balanced. The grenades are my favorite weapon and hardly useless, if you suck at aiming them, you can also blind toss them (much better imo), or run up and stick someone with a grenade.
The chainsaw is soooo easy to avoid, as if you see someone running at you with it, shooting them will deter their revving up and make it so they have to rev up it again. You then take that oppurtunity to chainsaw THEM.

10/10
Sorry <3

Unreal tournament is way old by now and GOW is the new hotness. GOW is much better anyway. Overhyped? Maybe if you read message boards like GAF every fucking day, but this game delivers. I don't understand people who hates on game just because they were hyped a lot. Its worth the money, and possibly (haven't played Viva Pinata) the best game for xbox 360 and it deserves the mostly perfect scores it's been getting.

Take Whitemans review above, its obvious he doesn't know wtf hes talking about, and me and viscen put him in his place.

Sorry.  Game is clunky and unfun!  It's passable as a coop game, but what game with competent network code doesn't make for good coop?

From a hype to quality ratio, this is basically Brute Force 2, though for whatever reasons (cliffyB cock), reviewers are being much kinder to it.

What was I proven wrong on?  I'll conceded the scripted and AI points since I've only played on default difficulty (and most everything DOES appear scripted there - I don't particularly like higher difficulty levels).  Everything else really can't be proven wrong.  It *is* a clunky game with clunky controls.

Another complaint is that enemies take way too many hits to go down.  It's no fun taking down enemies  when it takes 20 rounds to bring them down.  Shooting them in the knees is fun,t hough.

Also, stop lying.  I didn't play VP at all yesterday.

Edit:  The ultimate sin is the Goldeneye/Metroid Prime-esque aiming system.  Is it 1998?

How are the controls clunky, when I've never had a problem with them?  Pulling a trigger to bring out your gun and using the other one to fire is hard? Metroid Prime sucked at this because the gamecube controller is a piece of shit for shooting games. The GC controller has gay shoulder buttons.

The game has plenty of colors...what act are you on? I've seen every basic color but purple but I'm not quite finished with campaign yet. The locust holes are randomized not scripted like viscen said. I too have never caught on a wall while running. Although I imagine it's possible if someone moves you into the wall ala multi, but simply tapping A gets you out and back to running. I already went over the weapons you complained about in another post.

Also I didn't say "all day" I said it was the last game I saw you playing. Hell it might have been the day before, I was too busy enjoying GOW multi.

I dont think its the controls that are clunky but rather the animations. I noticed it first in singleplayer that the animations would stick and slowdown. I didnt know if it was from the game trying to figure out what i wanted to do or not. But everytime it stuck it'd do exactly not what i wanted it to do.

It also happens in multiplayer with the stickynade and most notably with the chainsaw. Its this small little bit of lag in the animations and weapon changes that break this game. It happens way too much online with people. And its bullshit.

A few other points that should be looked at in multiplayer. When you end a match i dont want to be sent back to the fucking main menu. And on ledges if someones underneath a ledge and someones above i should be able to fucking chainsaw that fucker from below or above. And when in ranked matches and someone drops another person from the other team should drop too.

But those are the only notable problems of the game besides the very short game length and non existant story. FUCK YOU Cliffy you tell us the games gonna have this great "SOUL" and "STORY" wtf was that shit dude there was no story. Just a lot of commentary between the freaking grunts

I played on Hardcore and at times it was incredibly frustrating when you unload a whole clip into those assholes and they're still fucking standing.

Still the game gets a thumbs up from me just because of how much was going on, great production values and an awesome co-op system.

Tell you something else, too:  FUCK CHECKPOINTS.  I should be able to save my game wherever the hell I feel like saving it in the "next-gen.".  I've played this one spot over and over so many fucking times, almost reaching the end and then getting killed, that I just want to break my controller across the bridge of CliffyB's nose.
