I think if you've gotten to the point where Jogging for a good 30 min becomes easy for you, its time to introduce HIIT :D

I think even someone who is overweight can do HIIT but a more light form of it (which is kind of contradictory but the whole Raise/Lower Heart rate premise would still apply). If you r overweight and your worried about stress on your knees, then I would consider an elliptical (at your local Gym!).

HIIT is widely considered to be the best form of Cardio from the opinion on how fast it can lower bodyfat/weight by manipulating the metabolism in the shortest amount of time.

A couple of things

- Don't go cold turkey on things, ween yourself of them. Candy, Juice, Soda and Fast Food. If you go cold turkey, you'll just crave them more down the line. It takes a while but its better to do it right.

Yeah I broke my rules once or twice. I had a couple sodas a day or two ago, but that's about it. I didn't beat myself up about it, just a "don't let it happen again".

See, I googled that right away, problem is, don't know my resting heart rate.

Because there's too much fat around my neck to feel my pulse. Not kidding. Same with the wrists. Even in PE we had to use a machine to get my resting heart rate, and I've forgotten that. I think my target was somewhere around 170.

Even so...I'm guessing no-one in this thread can teach you much about lifting heavy ;) I'm thinking you just need a lot more variety in your workouts. Anyone who can lift that much has pretty serious mental fortitude as far as I'm concerned. You can do anything you want to, 'cause nothing will be harder than squatting or deadlifting heavy. It might take longer, but it won't be any harder ;) That's what I tell myself on long runs these days...every second of this is easy compared to HIIT or heavy weights, it's just that it takes longer...

Oh shit, you may not think I'm that great anymore. Forgot to mention I don't do free weight squats. I'm not flexible enough to hold the bar behind my neck, so I had to use the machine where you're sitting down facing upwards and pushing a panel with all the weight on it up and away from your body.

If you have shoulder flexibility issues, try 'shoulder dislocations'. Start with a long towel or something if it's too hard with a bar or broomstick. They work very quickly. Again, this is something you're going to need for parkour or gymnastics anyway, so you may as well start now.

Not a valid excuse, I'm afraid. Fat is very flexible. It's your muscles that are inflexible.

I have to say that stretching and various flexibility regimens are non existent in my workout plans. I need to incorporate them more, especially when it comes to the flexibility of my hams when it comes to squats.

You NEED to stretch, otherwise you'll get injured, preventing you from training. Also, being inflexible severely limits the range of exercise/sports available to you. If you don't have proper depth on your squat, you don't get the full benefit of the exercise. If you squat too much weight while your hams are tight, you're gonna strain or tear them, simple as that. It's annoying because stretching hurts, takes a lot of time, and the effects can be hard to see, but still...you have to do it.

Yeah, it's not all gonna happen overnight, I know. But flexibility is somethat that you can start on right away, and will have some immediate results. Don't make me post vids of sumo wrestlers doing the splits! ;)

Well, you have some pretty dumb gym teachers then.  Such high rep exercises don't really stress the muscles enough to grow or build.  All it really ends up being is a really inefficient way of burning calories.  You're not building muscle in any way with such high reps, and don't say "bu-bu-bu I want to tone my muscles", because as I say below, you can't spot reduce fat.  I used to do 8-12 rep sets.  The highest I would go rep-wise would be a crossfit program, which, tend to be more high-intensity endurance programs where the emphasis is on speed.  And even then, I think crossfit exercises top out at 21 reps.

Ah.  That's not "max squatting 450lbs" then.  Big fucking difference between leg pressing and squatting.

Before I went to the gym in 2006, I weighed around 315, dropped to 295, and now I don't know how much I weigh.

Just the fitness room at my apartment complex. I do try to jog on KL ave from Drake to campus every other day. If I were employed, I would probably be a member of a gym, but as of right now I can't afford it.

No CPA, yet. But I plan to sit in the July-August window for at least the Financial section. Dude, it's weird because I've applied for hourly jobs and they rightfully are scared away by my Master's degree. But at the same time, I can't find a job in my field because I only have a Grad Assistantship and a CPA internship under my belt. I should have just quit at bachelors :-\

Oooh... that was a 450 leg press or whatever.  That makes more sense.  Leg presses are a good way to hurt yourself; the range of motion is weird for leg presses (usually very short because of the nature of the exercise) and it's easy to curl your lower back under an enormous weight because of this.  In contrast squats will help strengthen your LB--plus you'll have a longer ROM, be using less weight, and you'll start tipping over if you curl your LB too much (yeah, I consider that a good thing).

Here's another note, about flexibility: static stretching (ie hold a stretch position for a number of seconds) before / during exercise will actually weaken you during your work sets (you're asking the nervous system to do two conflicting / opposing things).  It's better to do some light activity to literally "warm" the body, perform some dynamic movements (leg / arm swings, joint rotations, things like that), and do a couple of low volume, low intensity ramp-up sets of the exercise in question; a good warmup should prime the nervous system for the work you're doing, not create fatigue or anything like that.

Squats do that to me too. Its such a horrible feeling. Its like you feeling a vomit coming on but it never happens. It sucks if your trying to do a full body workout that includes squats.
