Watched Naucissa over break, holy shit that was a great movie. I especially loved the 80's synth soundtrack to it, and the world/premise was very cool. I need to get back into watching more animu.

 :lol nooooooooo

Baccano is good because of the plot.  You just named two shows with no plot and gun action violence.

That's why my post ended with "maybe". I was going to say Cowboy Bebop, but I think that's pretty much a given.

On another note, I watched the first episode of winter anime Chu-Bra. It's bad. Real bad. Some of you might be tempted to ask, "Sure, but is it worse than Ladies vs. Butlers?" and there's really only one response that I can have to that: Would you rather have AIDS or syphilis? That's really what it boils down to.

Although, in Chu-Bra's defense, it does actually have a point, even if that point is really quite horrifying.

I think it's funny that the creator is a woman.

Yes, a woman created it.  Women even put out perverse and even hentai comics.   :o

EDIT: Ah, okay...this is the Yumi Nakata manga.  I read one of her other comics in Japan called "Madonna Shokudou," about a widow who runs a restaurant and her perverted customers.  Nothing sexual, just perverted.  It's really fucked up that she chose to make a comic about underwear centered around MIDDLE SCHOOLERS though.  :wtf

By the way, as someone who taught at Japanese junior high schools, I can also tell you that girls' skirts are not that long, and they wear their P.E. clothes underneath their uniforms, so nothing at all like animu happens.

...Well, except for the time that I got flashed by a student wearing undergarments that she most definitely should NOT have been.   I realized I couldn't even get her scolded for that, because then everybody would be wondering why I knew a student was wearing panties.   :lol

Kampfer (well, what I saw of it) is like 100 times better than Ladies Vs. Butlers.

It's kind of weird trying to describe it, but Chu-Bra was like "educational ecchi."   :lol  Nowhere near Ladies Vs. Butlers' level of WTF.

Alright, guys and gals, here's the news you've finally been waiting for: The winter 2009 anime season is officially SAVED. That's right, well and truly saved, courtesy of the creators of Bacano!, meaning that I'm talking about Durarara!!.

First episode is mainly setup since there's a ton of characters all moving around and sometimes interacting with each other, much like Bacano. Right now it's a bit difficult to see where it's going, but that's not really a problem right now. Anyway, the first episode was really good. There were a lot of characters, some that look rather interesting, and a bit of mystery added in. The story is about a highschool kid who has never once left his home town and then transfer to Ikebukoro to go to school with a guy that knew several years ago. But that's just the surface, there's a lot going on beneath that and it looks like a good setup for some awesomeness. Here's the kicker: animu is a minimum, fanservice is zilch, and moe-loli is not found here.

Rejoice, my brothers. Rejoice.

Baka to Test to Shokanjou

It's a highschool comedy show about a guy who's an idiot that's in love with a ditzy girl that's actually really smart. By any and all accounts this show should be not unlike many such horrifyingly awful shows that have polluted every anime season for the past decade, only...it's not. Somehow, despite everything against it, it's actually a really funny show that doesn't take itself seriously, isn't predicated on fanservice, and despite leaning on a few cliches still manages to feel far fresher than a lot of other shows out there.

What sets is apart is this: the show is built around all of the students being segregated into different classes based on their test results. The smart kids get a really awesome room with computers and sofas, the dumb kids get a room that's falling apart and have to sit on straw mats. In order for the dumb kids to get a better class room, they have to defeat that higher classes and take their rooms away through a virtual reality program that creates summoned beings based on tests scores.

It's kind of animu, but actually not a bad way!

I'll check it out, but man...even the ones people are praising (that Vampire show) seem to have the same ol' everything.  I haven't watched it, but checked the quality after I DL'd it, and the first thing I see when I skip to a segment is BIG BOUNCY TITTIES and then LOLI GIRL STANDING ON HIGH PLACE OVER THE CITY.

The variety show-style they used was original, but just dragged on for too long.  You could easily do a condensed version of the show in five minutes and not miss a single thing.

Yeah, it's the break between story arcs. Still, that's not even the biggest issue. The direction on this show is just so bland and unengaging. Scenes that should be really tense instead come across as lifeless. It has its moments, I'll give it that.

Quote

Yeah, it was pretty uneven but overall it was still fairly interesting. However, it gave me hope that Shaft could turn it into something other than lolibait like the manga was. Maybe that's just false hope though, but we'll know either next week or the week after.

Baka to Test to Shokanjou- You've got to be fucking kidding me.  This is like Megaman Battle Network or Pokemon or some shit, where the kids "battle" each other with points based on their grades, to take over the other classes' (better) classrooms.  I like the art style (and there's a few laughs in there), but this is just dumb so far.  Total animu.

EDIT: They take a make-up exam to recover "hit points?!"   :lol  I'm done with this.  It's a kids' show for the Pokemon crowd.

As intriguing as the idea of watching yet another show about students going to school to learn the arts of the dueling and becoming abusive Pokemon masters, Baka to Test is proving to be more that I thought it would in terms of failing to entertain and and moving on to the realm of I don’t see why they still make shows like this except for the fact that people still like it.

Story? Let’s see. We have the top straight +A girl who is most friendly towards the most incompetent guy on the whole student. Mind you, it should be hard to distinguish who is the biggest failure among the large amount of F students though but let’s flip a coin and pick the guy with the who is the undivided center of attention of this show even though he has have no other redeeming qualities to make Baka to Test any more or less interesting. I’m just assuming he’s the main character because he has the most amount of screen-time and his incompetence should make other F students feel better about themselves. Too bad that in those 25 minutes Baka to Test ran he or the show didn’t manage to make me grin once. You’re failing this course, buddy.

Mind you Mizuki’s l33t writing skills was the only redeeming thing I found

I half expected Mizuki to be the Louise of Baka to Tsukaima but that wasn’t the case, for better or for worse. What I sawinstead was that Mizuki was the Miyuki of Baka to Test for better or for worse.  They should have added a pair of glasses to her design if they were going for that appeal.

Although supposedly Mizuki’s presence is supposed to make this show a bit more interesting, it doesn’t accomplish to make any difference at all. Ok, I’m exaggerating she’s likeable just doesn’t shine enough as the trap of the show. At least they introduced his twin sister who is actually not a guy in the first episode… or is she? The rest of the characters are more plain than vanilla flavor. It was more like, Hi, uh-huh, I’ve seen you before. We could be friends but let’s not. Let’s move on.

Mind you, I never had any real interest in RPG games and I don’t understand what’s so great about them. So this might be a good argument to explain why Baka to Test isn’t appealing to me at all. Maybe is the boring characters and ’stupid” premise of a show, the unfunny jokes and a show whose  only good attribute was its surprisingly great animation. Frankly, I doubt that watching an anime with RPG-like battles is going to make me enjoy it any more. Even less when I didn’t find the first episode to be  any more interesting than the rest of the shows that I already stopped watching, but only less painful. Getting Baka To Test out of the way right now will save me the trouble of dropping it later on.

More shows that actually will  manage to catch my attention are supposed to air this week so I’ll patiently wait for them. Hopefully I won’t have to politely ask anime studios to wake me up when the season is over.

Verdict : Dropped

I liked the "trap" character's transformation joke and the generic pervert's reaction to seeing upskirt.  That was about it.

With how broad and over-the-top the whole thing is played, how could it not be seen as parody?

Well, whatever, not everyone can be pleased.
