This week's 1UP Yours is unlike any we've ever released before. That's not to say our regular great content isn't still there. We've got lengthy Whatchya Been Playing and News segments, including discussion of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Quantum of Solace, Diablo III, and Rock Band 2. But after all of that, in a special third segment recorded earlier this week, we sit down in the studio with Denis Dyack of Silicon Knights.

Dyack's next game project, Too Human, is nearing release, but the game and its recent round of previews (check out 1UP's right here) aren't in the spotlight so much as Dyack himself. He recently faced a round of criticism when he showed up on the popular NeoGAF forums and issued a challenge to forum goers to speak out for or against his game. Unknown to us, though, Dyack claims he actually did this as preparation for his appearance on 1UP Yours, which he explains on this week's episode.

According to Dyack, the infamous NeoGAF thread was started as an experiment to expose the lack of accountability in online forums. "I was basically calling out people who had no way of assessing the game," Dyack says, adding, "All I wanted to point out to people is that this is so ridiculous." Near the end of the segment, he lays out exactly why he made the post:

"I went through all of this for two reasons.... If you're going to look at the NeoGAF forum as a non-profit organization, if it does not reform itself, it's eventually going to crumble. There's going to be a point where they step over the line where someone's going to shut them down. That would be a loss for everyone.... The question I have to ask the moderators of GAF: Are you going to follow your own rules? With people making GIFs of myself that are, I would say, attacking me.... Why haven't 180 people been banned now? If I wanted to move in and shut that place down, do I have grounds under their own forum policy?"

Dyack concludes, "NeoGAF and other forums like this that don't have good management are not only hurting society and hurting the videogame industry, they're in decline, and they need to reform quickly before people stop listening to them.... If the moderators and people who run the site think they aren't doing any damage, they are sorely mistaken, and it's only a matter of time before something bad happens."

How can he not know that is a pure reflection of the industry itself? An industry of false promises, big talk and huge letdowns. An industry that talks of maturity, but couldn't write a thought provoking story if the entire game was laid out for them. It wants to have its nudity and blood, but not have to face the same standards of art that every other media does. Where is Mr. Dyack's accountability? Too Human was a 6 year game that boiled down to a hack n slash with choppy animation.

I don't even know what to make of this whole fiasco (farce). I was never too big on Too Human (didn't really ever pay attention to it), but every time I heard Dyack I became just a little less interested in it. Is it fair to say he is a whiny douchebag?

When said forum is basically feeding news-factual or not-to much larger and more visited sites, which are in turn feeding news into more mainstream outlets, there is a problem.

Though that problem doesn't have anything to do with the forum where stuff is originating. But I don't think it's wrong to say that to some degree a place like NeoGAF or equally large, under-moderated message board full of raving fanboys aren't helping drive better coverage of the hobby in the news.

After listening to the entire session, I am seriously shocked by how hypocritical and ignorant Dyack really is. He claims he has 'thick skin' and is willing to accept it when someone tells him he is wrong, yet after E3 2006 he attacked critics who said the early build of his game was bad.

Dyack in 2006: A preview talks bad about his game, he attacks previews and says they should be gone.
Dyack in 2007: The bad showing was because of the middleware, he attacks and sues Epic.
Dyack in 2008: Gaming forums talk bad about his game, he attacks gaming forums and says they should be gone or reformed.

I am in awe of how crazy this man really is. Seek mental help, Dyack.

This whole Too Human saga, all the way back from the PSX days, is simply incredible, although the last three years have really reached a fever-pitch. We've got a long development cycle across at least three different platforms, lawsuits, rants, breakdowns, choppy animation, and a larger-than-life character. If Hollywood doesn't knock out a King of Kong-style movie within the next few years, I will be sorely disappointed.

Because he's an absolute idiot who doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. This dude is seriously about to go off the deep end. He's invested years of his life, and now his entire reputation, on a game that is going to go down as mediocre at best.

I truly would not be surprised if the dude ending up killing himself as his career goes down in flames. He just doesn't seem stable at times when he speaks about other people hurting his game, and being unfair to him. His ability to reason is broken.
