Donate Less
« on: July 05, 2008, 05:36:32 PM »
I worked at a Goodwill for eight hours today. I was the only guy there, so I was doing all of the lifting and moving. Not the worst work in the world, but jeez. The people who worked there were split evenly between bitter 'good' people and convicts. Smoke breaks were entertaining.

I guess I've never thought about it, but there are a subsect of people who give all of their garbage to Goodwill. I must have taken in 120 deliveries, and almost all of it was crap. I will be donating less to Goodwill in the future, especially clothes. Probably 10% of all clothes collected are deemed good enough to be sold in stores. The rest are apparently sold as rags.

Some woman dropped off like ten huge bags of clothes, and a few boxes. I sorted out all of these musty men's clothes, tons and tons of them. I got to the boxes last, and it was full of empty pill bottles and fucking bedpans and cathaters/colostomy bags. WTF lady?

No less than three people gave bags and bags of assorted holiday stuff. Half-complete fake trees, jack-o-lantern pails...throw it away people!

By this time next week, I will have compacted more crap than I would ever buy. I really think spending time there will make me buy less crap.

Me too. But I usually donate a good bit of clothes throughout the year as well. That ends now.

---

Awesome shit like tye-dye star wars shirts get thrown straight into the "salvage" bin. Everything that I thought was cool was thrown straight away. They wouldn't even let me tuck cool stuff aside. Seeing a TOTO shirt get thrown into the trash was pretty much the low point of the day. Aside from the colostomy bags, I guess.  :-\

Probably because people stole all the good shit.

I remember in my crappy ass town I grew up in, there was a Goodwill basically near the ghetto of it.  My family and I dropped off two mattresses late in the evening, as my sister and I were getting older.  Anyway, as soon as we dropped that off and some other shit, as we started driving away, three people popped out of nowhere, briskly walked to the drop off pile, scavenged through our shit, and made off with at least one mattress (from what we could see from the rear view mirror).  I can only assume they took the other one and probably other stuff as well.

Kind of scary, considering how they could have just robbed us instead but they had to have the Goodwill booty.

I check the Goodwill every few weeks to see if anyone's dumped out any old PC games there. I got Loom a few ago for $1. Donate more of these things, people!
