How is the decision on 12/31 not fitting your definition? It ties along with the rest of the game, in a very different way. You mention butt rock when P3 has butt rock.
But it's not the core musical theme of the game, it's been switched to teen music. The only song done in the old style was the one that played when you fought a member of Strega and even it was played at a slow pace.
Yes that was a rare moment of brutality but even it's shown off-screen when you actually select the most evil option. There were many such choices in the core SMT games whereas there's only one in P3.
What the fuck are you talking about?! SMT doesn't take itself seriously? Are you talking about Persona? Even Persona, which has always been the more mainstream Persona series has always taken itself seriously.
On average the NPC dialogue in the original Persona was a lot more tongue-in-cheek than in P3. The original Persona had the hilarious recruitment dialogue too, but they've been replaced by tarot cards in the third iteration.
Jesus Christ what are you talking about. What absolutely hilarious allusions do you even speak of? I've played and beat console SMT released in the states and I have no clue what you are talking about. Persona is less about religious imagery than the other spin offs. Have you even played Persona 1 and 2?
Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 did take themselves seriously, yes. But not the core SMT games. SMT III which you've played has hilarious dialogue with the mud dolls, the souls and all the demon NPCs, and the recruitment dialogue. Not to mention that most of the villains that you encounter in the game aren't really trying to be scary, most of the time they're quite goofy (save near the end).
It was even more this way in the two Super Famicom games. Seems the franchise has gotten tamer and tamer over time.
You ought to finish them someday. I'm about to finish SMT II.
