It wasn't that one but it sounds similar. It was the NiN concert in Charlotte NC. We have an outside pavillion with a lawn section, and a section with seats under a roof. It started lightening like crazy and they stopped the show because it was so dangerous. Here's some of what I wrote in my LJ:
Strikes were coming behind the stage, behind the crowd, and generally
from every angle. There were thick single bursts, and arching
splitting strikes that branched downward. The crowd exploded with every
impressive natural pyrotechnic and the band whipped it into a frenzy, until
finally it was all over. The lights abruptly came on and everyone was
told that the concert was not over. They said the storm was supposed to
pass in a half hour, and that it was too dangerous to stand on the
lawn. Security informed us that we could go sit in our car, or come under
the roof. In the ensuing 15 minutes it took to clear the lawn, it was
clear that the crowd felt that the concert had been stopped
prematurely. One girl in the crowd saw fit to entertain us by showing her
breasts. Although cute, she could have used better breasts if she was going
to show them off like that. They seemed a little deflated to me,
ironically kind of like the crowd.
As Reznor came back on stage, it was clear he felt the same way. He
claimed that this was a first for NIN, that they had never had a show
stopped because of lightening. He said 'It felt like we were having sex
with you, and we were just about to make you cum and had to stop,' and
I couldn't have said it better myself. 'We'll just have to get you in
the mood again' he claimed, as he played another hour set. The band
was just starting to crescendo again as the storm exploded overhead.
Cold, thick rain began to hit us underneath the roof. It pierced our
clothing as we jumped and danced to the beat. As NIN got more intense, so
too did the rain. Eventually both nature and band were going full
blast. The rains came down in a bone-soaking matter, the wind whipping it
down and around. With the lights from the stage you could see the rain
swirling around underneath the cover. It was coming in horizontally,
and at least reached the front row of seats, if not the stage. The
storm was powerful, and the music matched it.
You could feel the crowd push deep into the cover to avoid the rains,
but it would not help. We all sat drenched in sweat and rain, feeling
primal as the metal pushed into our souls. Lights illuminated the
tired but energized crowd, and eventually NIN made us cum, as it were. It
was an amazing show, one I'll definitely never forget. In a way we
were lucky it didn't sell out, as there would have been no way for
everyone to squeeze together to avoid the worst of the storm.
It was so awesome. I'm not the biggest NiN fan (I liked Down the Spiral, Further Down the Spiral, and Pretty Hate Machine, but don't know any of their later stuff), but they put on an amazing show. Everyone was bummed when they stopped the show, but in retrospect it was almost like we got two shows. The FLAC recording of the show is awesome to have too, it happened just like I remembered it.
I was sober that show lol. My boy's gf got busted trying to smuggle a pipe in, so she had to take it back to the car. They were both on shrooms but since I had just quit smoking, I didn't want to trip and jonse. I was looking forward to smoking in the concert, but between the awesome music and the natural lightshow and soaking, I didn't need anything. It was just an incredible experience, very tribal in the end like I said.
