what's the best concert you've ever been to & why?

Tie for me between (get ready for this one) The Who and The Juliana Theory.

The Who: I've never seen so much energy in a show. The crowd was huge but unified. It was only a few weeks after John Entwistle died so there were tributes and it was just great.

The Juliana Theory: I've never felt such emotion from a show. I was right in front of a small crowd, there was no pushing and shoving, and everyone in the crowd sang along to all the songs.

What about you?

Tool - Just good solid stuff.  Plus I was high.

Matchbox 20 - Rob Thomas always has lots of emotion and energy in concert.  Great stuff.  Plus, he played "Push" and "Leave."  *sniffle*

Buzzfest 8 - Fucked one of my brother's friends and got really high.  Nickelback, Fuel, Default, Alien Ant Farm and Saliva.  Might have been radio rock and nothing deep.  But it was sure as fuck a fun time and the only Buzzfest to ever warrant going to.  *huggles Fuel*

Pearl Jam: Just really good live. If you've seen them live, I don't really need to explain why.

Interpol/Muse/Modest Mouse/The Killers/Franz Ferdinand/Taking Back Sunday:  This was all one show and while Interpol and TBS left some to be desired live(Interpol's style is not meant for live arena rocking), Muse and Franz rocked, especially Muse, who lit the place up. They got the whole crowd jumping in unison, like a scene from Matrix Revolutions.

Weird Al: He puts on good shows and this was a real fun show to go to.  The amount of costume changing he goes through is impressive.

Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man: Best intimate show I've been to.  Much smaller show than the rest and the whole crowd sort of swayed to her voice.  Plus, Alexi Murdock opened for her and was great as well. A spiritual sort of concert.

At slow speed we all seem focused
In motion we seem wrong
In summer we can taste the rain

Chorus:
I want you to be free
Don't worry about me
And just like the movies
We play out our last scene

Two can play this game
We both want power
In winter we can taste the pain

In our short years, we come long way
To treat it bad and throw away

Chorus

You won't cry, I won't scream

In our short years we come long way
To treat it bad and throw away
And if we make a little space
A science fiction showcase
In our short film, a love disgrace
Dream a scene to brighten face
In our short years we come long way
To treat it bad, just to throw it aawy

Chorus

Oh man, "Movies" by Alien Ant Farm was the shit back in the day.

Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Ice Cube, RHCP.

To be honest, I was more of a rap fan at the time. So, I didn't really appreciate how good that show was.

I went to 1994 and 1999 Woodstock too. Both great bills .. but those huge venues kind of lose something for the performances.

The best solo concert I went to was Rage Against the Machine in Detroit (1995ish). People were crashing the floor (from the stands) .. security lost control .. the riot squad was called in. A bunch of people were beaten up and it fueled Zach and the show. Pretty intense stuff.

07/13/03 at The Palace in L.A. - In Flames and Soilwork.  Two shitty bands played before them, and I don't even remember who they were.  But man, Soilwork then In Flames was the greatest chunk of awesomeness I've ever seen.  I was up near the stage and I pointed at Jesper during a solo and he nodded at me omg lol.

The most fun I've had at a concert is the They Might Be Giants concert I went to a couple years ago.  Crowd participation was mandatory and having 50 different Congo lines snaking through the crowd floor was pretty awesome.

As for the best concert, I'm not sure.  It was probably a Canadian band, though.

A Prince concert at a local, small club in 2002.  This place held maybe 500-600 people tops, and it was a last minute, tickets went on sale that day kind of thing.  Prince is the fucking man, and let me tell you Virgin club members something:  if you ever have the chance to go see Prince in a small venue, take a girl you want to have sex with, because not even you bastards can screw that up.

Manowar and Rhapsody, summer of 2005.

I was in the first row against the railing, and the show itself was mindblowing.

It started with an up with an opening band called HolyHell. Jesus, those guys really blew me away. Their female vocalist was great, and they was definitely better than you'd expect of the first opener.

Rhapsody came on next, and were fantastic. They really blew my socks off, and were loud as FUCK. I went to the show for Rhapsody, as they're one of my favorite bands. At that point, I hadn't ever listened to a Manowar song, so I had no idea what to expect.

Manowar came out, and MOTHERFUCK. I thought Rhapsody was loud. I was oh so very wrong. Here's a tip: If you don't want permanent hearing loss, DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF MANOWAR'S STACKS. Those things were fucking enormous. Then there were more speakers on stage with Manowar, and then there were more in the back. They played so goddamn loud that my entire body would vibrate with every goddamn note played. And they played for like 2 and a half hours or some shit. It was glorious.

I walked out of that show a changed Ecrofirt.
Firstly, I was blown away by Manowar, and became an instant fan.
Secondly, I walked out of that show a little deafer. have a hard time hearing people whisper now, and I can't hear frequencies as high as I used to. It's fantastic.

Some other great concert memories....

In the early 90's Toledo was trying to become a relevant place for indie bands to come and play. A place called Frankie's near downtown had great shows every Tuesday night. I saw the Smashing Pumpkins there in 1991 or 92 playing to about 150 people. They were pretty rough sounding live .. Billy's voice was bad.

Another place, changed from a shitty disco club (The Bijou) and changed over to 'The Asylum'. There I was fortunate to see the Toadies play in 1994 ('Possum King' is one of the greatest songs ever). Another one-hit band called 'Civ' opened up for them. Very high energy show.

Also, during that time. Kid Rock was just starting to shake off his rap roots (thanks to Vanilla Ice killing any white rapper's career) and tried to fuse more rock into his performance. Anyways .. about every 5 months he would play in Toledo. The guy puts on a hell of a live show.

November 8th-15th 2001 on the road with Tenacious D, Weezer, and Jimmy Eat World (california tour)

this was awesome being invited to hang around and fuck around for a whole week with these guys. I dont know what night was the best. Probably 11th in San Diego cause thats the night we got initiated in the D army. Being backstage and just chillin playing PS2's and just having fun.

It was a experience i cant forget. Lots of booze, bongs, and games were had that week.

The music was great too hearing songs from weezer that never made it onto any albums and the D's ramblings and playings of songs made just for you (i blame gass) they love making songs.

November last year working TheRollingStones at Savemart Center (fresno,ca)

This was my second best concert i've been to it was awesome to see the guys still rocking after all these years. Good people too, not snooty stuck up celebs which i was suprised with. But the music was key to the experience and it was awesome to hear. Lots of mixed aged people in the crowd too.

WRONG.

That was at Hammerfall/Edguy in August of that year.

And it wasn't me who got in the fight. It was our friend Patrick who couldn't fight off a little girl on his own. I pulled her hands off of it, and he went in the corner to have a breather after the ordeal.

In all fairness, though, he DID catch the thing. I'd never help them if the girl had caught it and he tried being a dick about it. No one else at metal shows seems to have a problem when someone else catches something. You just go back to rocking the fuck out. That crazy little girl though, tried to pull it out of his hands. She had it coming to her.

The best concert I've ever seen was a Nine Inch Nails concert, which, like most people here wasn't my favorite band going in.  I think sometimes you build up your favorites so much that you don't enjoy them as much in concert as you do a band that you aren't really expecting to be moved by as much.  Anyway, only half of it was NiN doing, as during the concert there was an amazing lightening show that ended up stopping the show halfway through.  After everyone got safely under the covering, the band came back on and dominated!  The rain picked up, coming sideways under the stage, and I swear the crowd felt like something out of Lord of the Flies.  It was so primal, so sexual, it was amazing.

Luckily there is a FLAC of this concert, I'm so lucky to have an audio reminder of that night.  I've listened to it once and it was almost as great as it was being there.  I wrote more about this concert here.  http://dj-tet.livejournal.com/2966.html

Manowar consistently plays extremely loud. Have you ever listened to Manowar? That's their gimmick, I guess you could say. They play loud, and hard, and fast, and they talk about kicking ass.

It wasn't that one but it sounds similar.  It was the NiN concert in Charlotte NC.  We have an outside pavillion with a lawn section, and a section with seats under a roof.  It started lightening like crazy and they stopped the show because it was so dangerous.  Here's some of what I wrote in my LJ:

Strikes were coming behind the stage, behind the crowd, and generally
from every angle. There were thick single bursts, and arching
splitting strikes that branched downward. The crowd exploded with every
impressive natural pyrotechnic and the band whipped it into a frenzy, until
finally it was all over. The lights abruptly came on and everyone was
told that the concert was not over. They said the storm was supposed to
pass in a half hour, and that it was too dangerous to stand on the
lawn. Security informed us that we could go sit in our car, or come under
the roof. In the ensuing 15 minutes it took to clear the lawn, it was
clear that the crowd felt that the concert had been stopped
prematurely. One girl in the crowd saw fit to entertain us by showing her
breasts. Although cute, she could have used better breasts if she was going
to show them off like that. They seemed a little deflated to me,
ironically kind of like the crowd.

As Reznor came back on stage, it was clear he felt the same way. He
claimed that this was a first for NIN, that they had never had a show
stopped because of lightening. He said 'It felt like we were having sex
with you, and we were just about to make you cum and had to stop,' and
I couldn't have said it better myself. 'We'll just have to get you in
the mood again' he claimed, as he played another hour set. The band
was just starting to crescendo again as the storm exploded overhead.
Cold, thick rain began to hit us underneath the roof. It pierced our
clothing as we jumped and danced to the beat. As NIN got more intense, so
too did the rain. Eventually both nature and band were going full
blast. The rains came down in a bone-soaking matter, the wind whipping it
down and around. With the lights from the stage you could see the rain
swirling around underneath the cover. It was coming in horizontally,
and at least reached the front row of seats, if not the stage. The
storm was powerful, and the music matched it.

You could feel the crowd push deep into the cover to avoid the rains,
but it would not help. We all sat drenched in sweat and rain, feeling
primal as the metal pushed into our souls. Lights illuminated the
tired but energized crowd, and eventually NIN made us cum, as it were. It
was an amazing show, one I'll definitely never forget. In a way we
were lucky it didn't sell out, as there would have been no way for
everyone to squeeze together to avoid the worst of the storm.

It was so awesome.  I'm not the biggest NiN fan (I liked Down the Spiral, Further Down the Spiral, and Pretty Hate Machine, but don't know any of their later stuff), but they put on an amazing show.  Everyone was bummed when they stopped the show, but in retrospect it was almost like we got two shows.  The FLAC recording of the show is awesome to have too, it happened just like I remembered it.

I was sober that show lol.  My boy's gf got busted trying to smuggle a pipe in, so she had to take it back to the car.  They were both on shrooms but since I had just quit smoking, I didn't want to trip and jonse.  I was looking forward to smoking in the concert, but between the awesome music and the natural lightshow and soaking, I didn't need anything.  It was just an incredible experience, very tribal in the end like I said.

James is done for as far as his hearing goes anyway, his father is nearly deaf and his grandfather was as well. It's hereditary.

I wouldn't want Manowar and Motorhead to play the same show, lol. It would blow the place apart.

James is done for as far as his hearing goes anyway, his father is nearly deaf and his grandfather was as well. It's hereditary.

I wouldn't want Manowar and Motorhead to play the same show, lol. It would blow the place apart.

No, Nikki.

Their deafness is due to Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Remember Unbreakable? Yea, My dad's like Mr. Glass. And I'm a carrier). I do not have the hereditary deafness problem, however, as I don't have an active form of the disease. My bones and connective tissues have not been effected by it, and thus my hearing remains intact (or would, if I didn't blast heavy metal all the time).

Silly :)
