I have troubles with power chords. I dont know how I should play Pchords like the 7-9-9 one. Should I use my pinky to get the last fret or should i use my ringfinger?

I personally just use my ring finger, if you're talking about muting the rest of the strings. Most time I just do whatever is most comfortable.

I use my index, ring and pinky for a three note power chord.  You could always use drop-d tuning and dish out some one finger death and destruction.

For something like that, I'd probably still just use my index and ring, as it looks like the B and e strings are a non factor. But again, it may just come down to comfort. If it's easier to work your pinky in there, I'd say do it.

It may seem like a stupid suggestion, but try slowing it down to a point where you can do it, even if it seems stupidly slow. Speed will come over time, with familiarity.

I agree, you probably need to slow it down, take your time, practice, and build up speed gradually.

Frankly, riffs with fast downstrokes can be one of the most frustrating techniques because to a degree either your right hand moves fast enough or it doesn't, and it can take a long time to build up the required speed and accuracy.

Things like the riff at the start of this are damn, damn, damn hard even though they might sound relatively simple:

It depends on the particular riff and the sound you're going for but most of the time a riff like that will call for all down strokes. 

Do you have the audio of the riff available, like on youtube or something?  It'll usually be clear from that how it is played.

I can't really hear but I'm not even sure they're using all downstrokes in the original.  To make it easier for yourself, I wouldn't worry about the G string at all - leave it out altogether.  It won't make much difference to the sound (I actually like it a little more without the extra note) and you can put it in later. 

Also, I find it easiest to play this using my index and a little barre with my pinky for the fifth and octave (the two higher notes on D and G strings).  Even if I'm just playing two notes on the A and D strings, I use my index and pinky.  You may find the same, or you might want to use your ring finger instead of pinky.  Either way, if you're playing all the notes I'd use a barre rather than using two fingers because there is a slide it's probably easier.

^Bildi, whenever I should play 3 note power chords I always skip the last note. Index and pinky finger are the only ones used. I'm totally gonna record the The Nomad song. I should record it alongside of the original song right? I can nail the slow second part of the song. It pwns so much. I must have recommended that song in a lot of threads now but got no response for it at all. That annoys me so much. I just wanna hear opinions you know.

It's a cool song - I listened to it the other day for the first time when I was checking out some of their songs.  Some of the riffs are really kick ass.  It'd be awesome to just hear you playing over the top.

IK was finally able to give it a listen all the way through (I have a bandwidth cap here at the lake), and yeah, it's a cool tune. I was actually surprised Dickinson(sp?) still had his range for a 2000 release, given that all their stuff I know is from the 80's. The chorus was th only part that didn't really grab me that much, but I do love the main song structure.

And, yeah, it's definitely not sounding like all downstrokes for the intro. Slightly muted, tight picking of the E.

I was thinking of getting another bass (full scale this time) since I'm starting to hate my bronco bass because of it's short scale and sound.

MusiciansFriend is having some deals on going so I was thinking about a new one from them. But then again, I kinda want to start to learn electric guitar also.

On a slow level, yes I did ok. Messing up a lot on normal tempo though. You find out how easy (basic) the song and riff is but very addictive.

That's a tough one. For me, I either find a riff/chord progression I like, and then just write lyrics over it, or, on the rare occasion, I can write an entire song in my head without even touching an instrument.
