yes, you can heal yourself as a paladin -- you get a healing prayer fairly early on, although how soon you do is a bit random.

Well the contest is who can make the strongest / farthest character (as shown on your death screen)

Yes, yes that's true. I have a new mage at 14 though, and mages *own*. I have full control over a level, first thing I do is to cast Detect Monsters and Find Hidden Traps/Doors and I can see exactly where everything is and avoid taking on what I can't handle. Plus if I get in trouble I can teleport to a random spot on the map. So yeah, mages own. Oh yeah I can also ID anything free of charge.


Also this: http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/angband.shtml I can't get it to work though :'( seems like it's really old and unstable.

Man down.

Level 26, floor 20, death by a poison that wouldn't go away. Sucks too because I had saved up a bunch of money for some awesome new gear and never got to spend it. Fun game once you learn it but I'm disheartened enough by my nameless hero's death that I don't think I want to continue on anytime soon.

sucks dude. :\ All I can say is that it goes faster when leveling every time you start over. Learn from your mistakes. Leave as little as possible to chance and always carry around means to escape, carrying around scroll of phase door and curing potions is a necessity. The game got a lot more fun once I got past the dreaded mid-20s and I have to say I really think you should try again, gets more fun every time.

Not enough potions and scrolls could get warrior Chief McCloud out of the deadly room he was in. I accidently teleported into a room full of Dark Hounds that kept casting blind and confusion on me. I kept quaffing potions and trying to read a teleportation scroll but there were just too many of them to allow me to. I'm done for now. I may start up another game before the deadline.

I've only been playing this character for 15 days. :) My basic tactic up until the point where I am now has been to stair scum (regenerating the level with stairs) until I found good enemies and/or pots I wanted. It has helped so much that I played a Mage, I really don't know how I could survive with a warrior seeing as he's the only class without any spells. Having identify and Detect Monsters has been completely priceless.

here are some good pointers, taken from http://www.thangorodrim.net/TANG/index.html :

Important depths:
"20: Free Action, See Invisible
25: Basic four Resistances (Fire, lightning, acid & cold)
38: Maxxed Stats, Confusion Resistance, Blindness Resistance (Stat potions will start showing up at level 30, with the exception of charisma pots but they're useless)
40: Poison Resistance
50: Hold Life
54: Chaos Resistance, Nether Resistance
60: Permanent and Temporary Speed of +20 or greater
80: Permanent + Temporary Speed of +30 or greater
99: As much as you can get. Sustains, Speed, every resistance,

Notes:
1. If you have high infravision, you can probably hold off on See Invisible for a few levels. Not very many, however; Ghosts start showing up soon, and they're cold-blooded.
2. Without Free Action you are very dead. Carrion Crawlers (among other monsters) have a melee paralyzation attack, which can keep you immobile until death. Also, monsters start getting the paralyze spell about here. Nothing is more aggravating than watching a puny monster slowly kill your character as you watch, helpless.
3. Confusion and Blindness resistance are vital. If you have these, you can rely on scrolls of Teleportation to get you out of any situation. Before this, you need Staves of Teleportation which can be activated when blinded or confused, although with a decent failure rate. Scrolls are fail-safe.
4. Poison Resistance is necessary because two monsters, Ancient Multi-Hued Dragons, and Drolems, start showing up at about depth. Both of these monsters breath poison for huge amounts of damage (700 and 800 points, respectively).
5. Hold Life is very nice, but not important. If you can't get it, carry lots of Potions of Restore Life Levels.
6. Chaos Resistance is *vital*. It also covers Confusion Resistance (at least in versions before version 2.8.5 od Vanilla Angband)."


Resistances:
"Resistances generally chop off a significant amount of damage, ranging from 1/5 to 2/3. Also, it is possible to doubly resist the basic four resistances and poison (single resists for these each chop off 2/3s of the damage incurred). When you doubly resist these, damage is chopped to 1/9. Double resistance is NOT having two permanent sources of the same resist! Double resistance is having both a permanent source and a temporary source (for instance, drinking a potion of Resist Fire while wielding a shield of Resistance provides double resistance to fire). Multiple permanent sources do nothing for you."

These things right here - greater vaults - these are where I started to get my gear from. These things usually hold ~5 artifacts and several good potions. Back when I was ~30 I usually dealt with these by teleing all the enemies away, looting everything there was without even putting myself at risk.
