I REALLY hope Gustav doesn't hit New Orleans
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:30:26 PM »
My sister (who's eight months pregnant) just took a teaching job at Tulane, and her husband at LSU. My younger cousin just started at Tulane.

If they have to evacuate, they're going to have to come stay with me and my family, and my sister can act nutty and emotional without the help of hormones.  :-\

Oh yeah, and I guess it'd suck for all those poor people too.

In theory, I'd feel bad for the people there. But I've often said those stupid enough to go back after Katrina can rightly float away during the next one. Living under sea level = for idiots and dirty Euros.

New Orleans is awesome. There's really no place like it, and it can be a great place to live. There's a reason people go back. I'd reccomend everyone go there at least once (assuming it's there in a week).

That said, everyone I know there always knew one bad storm/ direct hit could be terrible. People knew this. Despite what a lot of the national coverage said, something like what happened with Katrina wasn't totally unexpected by most people around here. New Orleans was just terribly handled and very unlucky.

In other news, work sucked today. All people were talking about all day was GUSTAV, and it's really distinguished mentally-challenged to worry so much this far out. I forsee tomorrow being annoying.  :-\

So, build a new city like it. Preferably one that is located above sea level.

An amazing idea, and one that could change the face of the South. We can call our city New New Orleans.

I wonder if, after London burned, Frenchmen said "maybe you should build a new city like it. Preferably one less flammable?"

Michael Moore doesn't agree with you.

Quote
“I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven,” Moore said, laughing. “To have it planned at the same time – that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for day one of the Republican Convention, up in the Twin Cities – at the top of the Mississippi River.”

He really has become the left's Ann Coulter.

As of right now, I'm projected to be on the west side of it. WEST IS BEST. Supposed to hit near Houma, which is awful for NO, but at least it won't be as bad as last time since evacuations were handled much better/more paranoid this tiime around. If it stays on track (selfish hope), I'll have to stay through the weaker side of a strong CAT-1. Been there a few times. Power will probably be out for a few days, but what can you do?

It kind of sucks in that as I've gotten older, I know people/married into family from Florida to Houston. No matter where it goes it's bad for someone we care about. Hopefully everyone comes out alright.

Except for Michael Moore.

I remember a black conservative acquaintance of mine telling me that Katrina happened as punishment for the sins of NO. Absolutely disgusting. This is no different.

I used to be a big Moore fan. I have one of his books, saw Fahrenheit 911 in the theater and bought it, etc. But after a little homework I realized he's a fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow. Now he doesn't even hide it, hence this or him suggesting Obama pick Caroline Kennedy as the vp

we really should be allowed to airdrop michael moore from a helicopter to plug a hole in a NO levee if need be.

I've been doing some light research on the levee system and comparing it with the storm surge patterns predicted and teh forecast path. The city is at this point probably on a knife's edge between catastrophe and serious damage.

Now that's it passed over Cuba, it should pick up some steam in the gulf and get back up to Cat 5, although they're currently saying that it'll fall back to Cat 4 before it makes landfall.

I feel bad that I get so excited over these imminent disasters.

I worked for years in college in the met department (actually the super fancy tropical and atmoshpheric prediction center) at FSU. We always popped a collective boner over huge hurricanes, regardless of whether they were potentially headed to major urban coastal areas or not.

BTW, this storm looks like the stuff straight out of nightmares as someone who dearly loves the city of New Orleans (born there, visited there all the time as a kid/teen/college student before I moved to NC). I even did a couple of weeks of inner city volunteer work there in 1992, I remember how poor (and how black, lol wolf blitzer) the people were in parts of the town and later when Katrina hit I couldn't get those neighboorhoods out of my mind (since they all flooded completely over).

I was actually in Melbourne, FL when Fay hit. Hurricanes aren't cool like Thunderstorms or Tornadoes in the sense of a danger you can see. You just get hit with a fuckload of rain and higher winds. Though, I'm sure the beach and waves must have been huge. Gustav looks to be on multiple higher levels.

it's a unique, amazing city. Hopefully it'll pull through this one in one piece.

Edit: Fay was a weak storm with no real surge-that is where the real scary is in a hurricane. Storm surges are the #1 cause of fatalities in hurricanes because they bring a wall of water that literally rises so fast people can't escape it (since there is no way to run from it).

Honestly? The best long term realistic scenario is that they get really lucky for a long period of time. With global warming and rising sea surface temps in the Gulf of Mexico, eventually no amount of civil engineering miracles is going to prevent a megastorm from destroying the city.

It most definitely was-but that trend was changing in the 80s and 90s as deindustrialization of the area was depopulating/squeezing out the mostly black working class anyway, and the good services jobs were being taken by white people living in Kenner and the "nicer" neighborhoods.

New Orleans will never go away because a major source of natural gas and oil is brought in through New Orleans.  Nobody is going to spend huge amounts of money laying down new pipeline unless they are subsidized by the government.

If you're not in those industries, why you live in NO is beyond me.

So did it hit the shore yet? I await horror storries.

Houma getting hit pretty hard, and haven't seen much out of NO yet. I'm getting tropical bands right now, but it shouldn't be too bad for a few more hours. TV (live local feed @ katc.com) saying the weakened eye will move right over my area, but should be down to about 70-80 mph winds by then. Expect the news to really start coming out of NO in a few hours.

I really hope this holds. So far everyone I talked to is OK, although so far, out of everyone I've talked to, I'm the only one with power. May be a full house tomorrow.

Took a walk a while back to check out the damage, and saw this~
