And are they contractually bound to use that kind of "I thought she was with you" shtick?

The last trailer was a few ominous one-liners thrown on top of a music video, so I had forgotten to brace myself for how fucking horrid the dialogue would be. Uggggghhhh.

Hey Snyder/WB, have you noticed how everyone has gotten super hyped off of the Star Wars trailers even though they have given away nearly nothing of the plot?

No, of course you haven't.

So Lex uses dead Kyptonian bodies to create a monster, and then zzzzzzz

The excessive CGI for even the most minor shit really gives me Star Wars prequel vibes.

Yea, even as a casual person (who I'm assuming they are targeting with a trailer like that), I feel like there is no reason to see it in the theater. The big intrigue was watching Superman and Batman fight each other and now that I know it's going to resolve itself because they have to fight yet another city-destroying alien, I don't care to see it at all.

I'm sure it will make a lot of money though. People seem to love watching cities getting destroyed by aliens or natural disasters.

Introducing Batfleck, moving him right into conflict with Supes, introducing Luthor, going right into him being a supervillain, having him make a bootleg Doomsday so Batman and Superman can resolve their differences and team up, bring in Wonder Woman, throw in Aquaman and Cyborg somewhere, etc.  Also Batman's out fighting in the desert or some shit and wearing a jacket?

Almost all big summer movies these days have to subordinate their story to the goals of tying in the IP of a bigger franchise and hitting a huge action beat every 20 minutes, but BvS really looks like it's getting crushed under the weight of those demands.

It really feels like that's their thinking, doesn't it?  Like they're riding Marvel's wave until the fad is over.  Weirdly no confidence in their own product.

Superman's a very big deal, Batman's a huge deal, and people know Wonder Woman, The Flash, etc.  Just make competent movies and let it come together on a natural timeline, guys.  That'd be fine.

It's not DC vs. Marvel, it's Warner Bros. vs. Marvel Entertainment. The reason Marvel beat them to the punch by such a long amount of time is that WB is a big studio with lots of big personalities who all have lots of ideas. Kevin Feige is a dyed-in-the-wool comics fan. You think any of WB's execs know who the fuck Blue Beetle is? Probably not.

Fuck the Snyderverse, honestly. It was straight pap from day one with Man of Steel.

You know what's DC and live action and pretty great? The Arrowverse. Shit is tight, especially The Flash.

Honestly people have been predicting the downfall of super hero movies since like X2 and they keep just getting more popular.  Also the Chinese market is now huge and growing and they love dumb action movies.  Rushing this seems like a miscalculation the size of Amazing Spiderman 2.

I'll enjoy the movie but I'm not hyped for the universe and spin offs like I am the Marvel stuff.

Watchmen was the definition of the sum being less than it's parts. Majority of the movie is made of genuinely great scenes, in isolation executed flawlessesly, some of the best comic book stuff put on film still...all adding up to a hill o' beans.

Let's not forget the film that made him a "visionary", that trailer was fucking badass at the time too:

He has a great visual sense, especially transferring comics to action, which can lead to some amazing scenes, but every single one of his films has felt way too long with way too many subplots and lacking a clear direction on where all the moving parts are headed.

Like two minutes after Zod dies, Man of Steel just kinda...ends.

I still like 300.

Th problem with Watchmen is that it feels very disjointed, like a series of scenes edited together as others have said. Another major issue is the bad acting, especially in regards to dialogue delivery. Like the Star Wars prequels there seemed to be no director focus on anything outside of the CGI and action choreography.

I thought for the theatrical cut, Snyder should have moved more of Watchmen's scenes (if not parts of the plot) around more than he did, and left the full version for the six hour Director's Cut. I would have approached it trying to focus heavily on the mystery/thriller aspect of the plot, cutting based on that instead of trying to panel-for-panel recreate everything.

The concluding peak plot scene is dull as fuck and hamfisted. Doesn't have the same emotional pacing or something.

Also most of the casting/acting outside of Rorschach and a latex clad Malin Akerman just seems awful.

Man of Steel was similar in terms of killing the pace with the unnecessary Krypton stuff and really everything pre-Superman except nomad Clark. And the final act didn't seem as well plotted or staged as the Smallville one/the escape from Zod's ship/etc. near the middle. Though lots of these movies (including Marvel's best...Avengers/Winter Soldier/Guardians) have problems with the last act for whatever reason*. The Nolan trilogy fell apart regularly at about the same point in each movie.

*I imagine BvS will be the same with a nice series of Batman/Superman duels plus endgame setup, and then a crap finale with Doomsday/Luthor/Diana/Cyborg and lots of destruction.

Fuck, Snyder makes a hell of a trailer. I guess he did get his start making commercials and music videos (same thing, natch) though, so that's to be expected probably.

How did BvS wind up with such a crappy one? I mean, these show pretty much everything, but it's only in retrospect having seen the film that you know where each part fits except for maybe those huge machines and the Metropolis battle obviously being part of the finale. And that's mostly the third trailer, which is from a month before release.

Anyway, back to AdVenture Capitalist!

Snyder was so obsessed with adapting Watchmen panel for panel that the film has no identity. Watchmen is a great source material but like anything else requires changes to work/flow on film. Instead the film has a "this happens and then this happens and then this happens" feel to it.

Definitely not a terrible movie, but its incredibly plodding. Feels like nothing happens the entire movie, and then shit happens in the final 10 minutes. 300 is Snyder's worse movie, just for the bro culture that ate that shit up. 300's popularity was very strange, bros loved it, along with meme spewing 4chan nerds.

Watchmen is a weird movie. On the surface it is slavishly faithful to the source, so much so that the pacing is terrible. It does however deviate sometimes and it is even worse (the ending doesn't bother me, but the assassination attempt is hilariously ham fisted). To an extent, 300 has the same problem : Superficially xeroxing the book but with some parts were the visuals are outrageously amped up and a lot of unfortunate padding (Leonidas pondering constitutionality, Senate refusing to sent reinforcements  :gurl ). And I could even add Man of Steel to the pile : in the end it does lift most of its substance from the Donner movies, with a dark and edgy form.

While I'm not sold on the kind of visuals he produces (That Krypton intro  :yuck), I can admit there's some minimal effort going on here despite his weaknesses (that zoom - refocus effect in MoS being used again and again and again...). The key problem is he and his team (including his wife, I believe ?) are incapable to come up with a good script and to curate and edit their sources.

300's side plot was the weirdest fucking thing, I have no idea why they added that specific side plot.

I actually liked the reworking of the Persians into mythical monsters since the framing device is a future storytelling to new recruits.

300 is basically just a graphic novel with little exposition so Snyder had some freedom in reworking and adding to the battle scenes and everything, but Watchmen is a dense and much longer work that's heavy on it. If they made it now, it'd probably be one of these two-part films to maintain the panel-for-panel design.

1:1 adaptations work well depending on the source material. Comic books and visual novels have always sounded cooler when being talked about in a general sense. Hearing or reading a summary of 20 Batman comics paints cooler imagery than actually reading through those 20 comics. At least, that's what it feels like as someone who doesn't like the comic book format but can dig a superhero story.

That's the main reason why The Avengers and the Nolan Batman movies work. Either show these characters doing outrageous cool shit for two hours, or take the source material and do your own thing for two hours.

Yeah, it was pretty great in the theater. Lord of War was another film I really liked in the theater, though it stands up better outside of it than 300. Dark Water is a bad movie, but a lot of its city shots looked great on the big screen.

My favorite though was seeing Hot Fuzz with three other friends, and that was it, nobody else in the theater. :lol

I had a similar string of hits and misses in college with mostly misses around 2005-2006. That was the year of STEALTH. Which I didn't see until years later and loved in a so bad it's hilarious way.

Silent Hill was another movie I kinda liked more in theaters, especially Pyramid Head's scenes. Speaking of movies with god awful third acts. Even if it is fairly true to the games.

The Lady in the Water was around the same time, and The Illusionist. Little Miss Sunshine. Red Eye. Ultraviolet. A Prairie Home Companion. Flyboys. Freedom Writers. Smokin' Aces. Ugh, so many bad choices. Why did I let my friends pick movies to go see.

300 and Hot Fuzz were the two I pushed others to go see. :smug

Jarhead was good. So I guess it wasn't all bad. Though my friend was upset for the same reason I like the film.

Hoodwinked! is a secret favorite, that people always wonder how I can like it. Same with Lucky Number Slevin. Oh, Thank You for Smoking! The Queen, The Departed, Stranger Than Fiction (even if I don't like the ending), Casino Royale. Notes on a Scandal.

The Proposition  :lawd

lol that was the era of Snakes on a Plane and Idiocracy too, with completely opposite internet interest that would reverse like a year later

Watched The Visit.

15 minutes in I wasn't sure I was gonna like it. The little boy is kind of annoying and kind of hit or miss when it comes to acting. And the camera footage gimmick is another one of those cases where its like completely not necessary. It would have worked better as just a straight normal movie ass movie. I'm not sure what makes this generation of kids and young adults think that found footage films is more visceral or something but in 20 or 25 years, people are going to look back and wonder why the hell all these movies were made this way.

That being said, its a very simple but ultimately effective horror/suspense movie. And one that genuinely leaves you feeling slightly un-nerved in a good way at key moments. It's not a great movie. It could have been a great movie with a few less gimmicks and slightly better pacing and construction but its a solidly good one and that's rare today for horror films. This is the level we expected Shyamalan to drop every time he made a movie. Not the detour into crap he took.

It's a reworking of the leaked Comic-Comic trailer, but I'll take it. Looks just as crazy and awesome as I hoped.

Megapocalypse pinning Charles down :whew

Jean, Storm, Cyke, Jubilee all looking on point :lawd

:bow Nightcrawler and Quicksilver :bow2

No Olivia Munn in that trailer, after all that press.  :lol
