Tasty Meat, one of these days you and I will disagree about a movie, and it will be a dark time.

Speaking of  comedy "sequels", saw the new Ghostbusters movie tonight.

I had no dog in this fight. I like the original but I've only seen it twice in my life and I don't have a slavish devotion to it as a piece of 80's nostalgia. I also definitely thought the overt sexism towards the movie pre-release and in some cases post-release was disgusting.

All that being said the movie is a mess and pretty bad. The script is terrible. It barely makes sense and spends almost no time trying to characterize these people as real people. Some people are completely miscast. The "bad guy" I've seen be funny in other things but he's completely out of his element here.  Kristen Wiig is kinda all over the place and never really lands her character either. And the Chris Hemsworth character is just a complete disaster. The special effects suck. There are too many special effects. The cameos are embarrassingly bad.

It basically feels like one of those lazy snl movies they use to crank out in the 90's and early 2000's on the regular. It's unfortunate. The movie has a lot of individually talented people. But they've all been brought here in service of something so forgettable.

Without spoiling Tony Stark was justified.

Tony was wrong about basically every single thing in the movie.

About having to register for government regulation? sure. That wasn't what I was talking about.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Tony was justified in wanting to murk Bucky. Oh OK Cap he's your friend but say a few random russian words and he's back to trying to kill you.
[close]

Uhh no

spoiler (click to show/hide)
He wanted to kill Bucky for killing his mommy. And he was wrong for that. He was 100% OK working with Bucky in the Hydra base at the end until the video.

Even if he was logical and clear-headed about Bucky's potential danger, he never bothered to seek out a solution - like the one Cap eventually found. Hell, Black Panther was technically on Tony's team!

He was wrong about Steve just doing it for Bucky too, and he was wrong about the super soldiers plotline (he copped to both these in the movie, of course.)

As for Sokovia Accords, having the gov't in control worked so well in The Avengers when the World Security Council wanted to nuke New York. Or in The Winter Soldier when they had been Hydra pawns the whole time.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong. Especially about Bucky.
[close]

I will say that the writing and RDJ make Tony's actions seem plausible and justified until you think about them, a vast improvement over the comic version

One other thing: This movie would have been the PERFECT opportunity to show Tony Stark's alcoholism as another contributing factor to his UTTER WRONG-NESS. He's moved more by emotion than logic in his decision to back the Accords. He's so short on staff, he decides to recruit a superpowered high school student, pull him to Germany on a combat operation, and puts him in a death-threatening situation. He uses repulsor beams on Falcon. And it sure as hell would explain all the spoilered, final-reveal, last-big-fight stuff in a more believable and even more sad context.

Finally saw Warcraft last night, was expecting an absolute disaster but the movie was surprisingly fun, looked the part too.

Definately had more fun watching it then any lf the Hobbit movies. Obviously it helps Ive been playing and reading Warcraft for like 20 years,  but my wife with no knowledge whatslwver liked it too.

Hope we get more as the universe deserves it.

Paramount and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions are teaming to recruit Captain Planet to take pollution down to zero.

The studio is in talks for the rights to the 1990s cartoon series, and is eyeing Jono Matt and Scream Queens star Glen Powell to write the script.

If the deal is made, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and DiCaprio will produce the project via Appian Way, which signed a first-look deal with Paramount in March, along with Powell.

Margot Robbie was great as Harley Quinn and Will Smith was a good Deadshot. Didn't hate Jared Leto Joker in small doses.

The rest of the cast did OK too. Didn't like the villain much. Bar scene was a highlight.

SS got a lot of character stuff wrong (NEEEEERD) in order to mould it into a super 'hero' movie and that annoyed me (especially in the case of the joker since he'd, i assume, form part of the larger DC universe soon). The character motivations are suspect, some of the char developments were awful and they werent even close to being cutthroat and raw enough. DESPITE all my nerdery, it was an enjoyable film worth paying a few bucks for a cinema ticket and some popcorn. I just wanted a stupid 90s popcorn Will Smith movie from all of this, and I feel I got enough of that to scratch that itch for a while.

I've tried to sit through Age of Ultron a few times.  I've only ever made it like 45-50 minutes before I find that I completely zoned out and I end up surfing the net on my phone or something.  I really enjoyed Avengers 1 too.

Like everyone has been saying, it looks like Marvel's The Last of Us.

You mean a try-hard derivative serious drama with old men & long faces?
The trailer was painful to watch. Mangold is a decent director so it will not be that terrible, but man, the studio brief is soooo transparent it hurts.

Give me Batman & Robin any day over that shit.

Tim Miller is off of Deadpool 2.

Well, shit. That's deeply unfortunate. 'Creative differences' are cited, but Deadpool is pretty much the best recent example of a lead actor and director working in sync. I'll bet Fox is screwing the pooch on this.

Apparently they aren't with FOX:
Quote
After a series of creative differences between Deadpool director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds, Miller has exited Deadpool 2. He hadn’t formally signed a deal to continue, but he was developing the script and by all accounts had planned to return behind the camera for a film Fox will release in 2018.

I’ve confirmed from studio insiders this exit was over mutual creative differences, but this all ended amicably and the studio is very high on Miller and the expectation is the filmmaker will jump right into another big Fox project: Influx, an adaptation of the Daniel Suarez novel that has a Mark Bomback script and is expected to launch a film trilogy.

Bad Moms: Was an OK comedy.  Mila Kunis as a mom of 11 year old kids was just not very believable...she looks and acts way too young.  Had some laughs, but this is one of those movies you watch and then quickly forget about.

Tango & Cash: Had never seen this before.  An incredible slice of 80s cheese- I see that Jon Peters had his hand in this movie and it shows.  Read that before he was involved, it was supposed to be much more serious.  Instead what we got was a like a live-action cartoon, in particular the scenes with Jack Palance acting like the stereotypical evil Mr. Big type character and making monologues saying he'd get Tango and/or Cash next time, while watching them on video screens.  :lol   I kept thinking that Kurt Russell was trying too hard to be Patrick Swayze in this movie and surprise!  Swayze was originally supposed to play his part.

Tango & Cash is decent, yeah, good casting (Brion James, Geoffrey Lewis, James Hong...). The whole prison escape with Z'dar is OK too and the whole incongruity of Stallone playing the preppy cop. You could do a lot worse looking for a 80-90 buddy movie.

It felt fresh, and the fourth wall breaking was new to the superhero genre. It wasn't about saving the world, it was about saving his girlfriend and getting revenge. The jokes were hit and miss but they hit more often than not for me (and others, I assume.) And the action was pretty well directed (plus the R-rated gore helped differentiate it.)

Overall, just a nice lean comic book movie, which is what the world wanted after Avengers 2, BvS, Suicide Squad, Civil War, etc.

Logan looks to be in the same mold, just a stripped down story that happens to have comic book characters in it. Fox killing it with their X-verse (Apocalypse was good.)

It also nailed the character down perfectly.  Ryan Reynolds did an amazing job of bringing him to life on-screen.

The Wolverine was not very good, and it sucks because the story it was based on was perfect for a movie adaption, but they still fucked it up- it's from the original Wolverine limited series and was just about Logan in Japan romancing Mariko and fighting against her yakuza father.  No superhero bullshit.  No dumb losing the healing factor shit or mecha samurai crap.  Why the hell did they deviate from the formula so much?  :-\

I hope Logan is a good movie but I don't have the highest of hopes for it.  I assume the girl is X-23 and I guess will take over his role since this is supposed to be Jackman's last film.  Kind of surprised they didn't base it on Old Man Logan but maybe it is and I'm not seeing it from the trailer?

Looks like it's loosely based on Old Man Logan, or at least some of the elements of that comic. Not a straight adaptation, though.

There's not much they can take from Old Man Logan without the MCU and there's not much I'd want them to.

The Wolverine >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Apocalypse

🤔

I loved The Wolverine to bits but I'm unsure here. Apocalypse was schlocky sure but there was a competent story there and lots of fanservice, and suffers mostly because of the "end of the world" plot getting abused so much. The Wolverine was great until it's ridiculously stupid ending. For me they're about equal.

Of course, my love of Apocalypse's Quicksilver scene and Nightcrawler might be blinding me.
