I think Kill Bill is fun. I’d like to see the edited together version... but only if it actually reedited the movie and tried to make it svelte. I think it’s my least favorite of his. Part I is cool and slick, and while I appreciate that Part II isn’t exactly a carbon copy in tone and pacing, it really didn’t hold my attention that much.

My kids wanted to watch Star Wars for the first time last weekend. It's been a while since I watched it and it holds up really well and really exposes the issues with the sequels (and prequels for that matter).

Something that you notice is that there is time to breathe and there is mystery to the whole setting. The level of power-creep of the force has been ridiculous too. The force is pretty much just like entering a zen-state and enhances the person's existing attributes, rather than basically DnD max level mage bullshit.

This has my attention. This would be great casting. Wyatt could look exactly like Kurt if he wanted. And he’s pretty cool himself.

Birds of Prey - Was pretty fun. Mary Elizabeth Winstead was greaaat and I'd like to see her in more DC stuff. Ewan Mcgregor did a real good Black Mask performance. Good looking visually and stylish. Harley Quinn is Harley Quinn and whether her character clicks or grates with you is on you.

Thinking about it more, I really think Winstead stole the show in that movie. Her role was pretty short but the

felt like a pretty original and funny take on the superheroes genre. Too bad her character's so minor she probably won't show up in anything again. Would rather see a movie with Huntress over a lot of other superheroes. Would be like a Wes Anderson superhero film.

"im only going to watch foreign movies now, hollywood is trash" is possibly the dumbest refrain following watching kill bill as your hollywood frame of reference, a film very explicitly riffing on a foreign style that's a huge stylistic departure from your normal hollywood fare (especially at the time).

Trump Inexplicably Complains About ‘Parasite’ Oscar Wins for Some Reason

https://www.thewrap.com/trump-parasite-oscar-wins/amp/

Quote
In the middle of a rant during a rally in Colorado Springs on Thursday, President Trump, for some reason, took a detour into the movie business in order to complain that the South Korean satire “Parasite” won the Oscar for Best Picture instead of an American film.

Also, for some reason, he called the award “best movie of the year” and appeared to suggest that Oscar voting is a matter of national trade policy.

“By the way, how bad were the Academy Awards? And the winner is a movie from South Korea,” said Trump. “What the hell was that all about? We got enough problems with South Korea with trade. On top of it, they give him the best movie of the year? Was it good? I don’t know. Can we get ‘Gone With the Wind’ back please? ‘Sunset Boulevard.’ So many great movies, the winner is from South Korea. I thought it was best foreign film, right? Best foreign movie. No! Did this ever happen before?”

Trump also insulted Brad Pitt, calling the “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” Oscar winner “a little wiseguy.” No, we don’t know what that means either.

“Parasite” distributor Neon wasted almost no time responding to the presidential complaint. “Understandable, he can’t read,” the studio tweeted.

Neon’s succinct dis referred to the fact that “Parasite” is subtitled, something director Bong Joon Ho joked during the Golden Globes is the “one-inch barrier” audiences need to overcome. After his film’s impressive four Oscar wins, which also included Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, Bong said he realized that audiences may already have. [...]

I watch Sunset Boulevard at least a few times a year. I have a pretty active Billy Wilder Love cycle. I will not stand for the slandering of Sunset Boulevard. But it is funny he’s holding up a movie about a deluded aging public figure and basically saying it’s the right thing to love.

Do you think it is was intentional that after complaining about a foreign movie winning over American movies that his first example of a movie that should win is one that romanticizes the Confederacy, or is that just a happy coincidence?

Dunno. Never seen it. But I assume that if he likes Sunset Boulevard, it’s of similarly high quality with some mild subversive content.

I don't think the Oscars has ever been exclusively American has it? I think a movie just has to appear in a cinema in America. And I don't think it matters how many it appears in. For instance 1917 got a limited release in America back in December just so it qualified for the Oscars. It then went on wide release in January.

I guess there is more reason for contention around whether it should be an English speaking movie or not. Although the reason the majority of Best Picture awards have gone to an English speaking movie may just be to do with the fact that it is an English speaking territory, which means most movies watched will be in English and most movies released will be. I'm not sure if there was anything in the rules or not that explicitly stated it though.

It only has to appear on a few screens in NYC/LA and only for a short period of time [two weeks, I think]. Parasite is the first Best Picture win by a foreign-language movie, but it's definitely not the first to be nominated [Off the top of my head: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon got a Best Picture nom].

Edit: Here's a comprehensive list:

Watched the new Netflix Batfleck/Hathaway movie.

With such a cast, including Dafoe as well I figured it was good.

LMAO, what a mess of a movie. It is called "The last Thing he wanted" or something.

Basically this reporter chick is looking into the Iran Contra affair but if you didn't watch Narco's the week before you probably miss that link.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Turns out her dad is suffering from dementia and actually an arms dealer sending guns to the Sandinista's or Contra's or 'they're all the same' really.
So because he's ill she has to stand in for him. As she takes the shipment she figures out something is not right, as she's not getting paid.
She does all this dumb shit. Like Carrie Homeland but dumber, much dumber. While constantly playing the: "I'm the strong women with F E E L I N G S angle".

Affleck is this government agent but we don't really know what his position is. Just agent and he's close to the secretary of state.
He fucks her for some reason despite her hating him because he's one of the bad Reagan guys. And boy does she hate Reagan.

In the ends he shoots her because he was the one pulling the strings all along and they had sorta ran out of people who could be the bad guy.

In between there's the whole divorce, kid in boarding school, token minority friend, breast cancer, boss who doesn't care about JOURNALISM, undercover French agent, retired CIA(?) gay man with a safe house who wants BBC and weird Russian(?) guy in on the deal(?). After 30 minutes it makes zero sense. I kept watching because I enjoy a flaming train wreck such as this from time to time.
[close]

I like how you can tell from Affleck's face how much he hated to act in this flaming garbage pile of a movie despite seeing Anne's titties.

The Traitor - Average. Decent. Source material is fascinating. The movie doesn't really turn on the suspense or tension as much as I would have liked. Maybe if it was directed differently or focused on less things. As it is, this would have been better suited for a 50 minute, 6 episode short series. I don't think I've heard the word "CUCK" as many times in... any movie? Obviously an Italian touch.
