It's amazing that they keep making more and more even though they've all been terrible past the first movie.

At least the Tim Burton one had amazing creature effects.  CGI seems like such a huge step backwards after that.

http://www.deadline.com/2010/07/guillermo-del-toro-and-james-cameron-ready-to-climb-at-the-mountains-of-madness-together-at-universal/

EXCLUSIVE: Since he left The Hobbit, Guillermo del Toro's next film has been a hot topic of conversation. I'm hearing he will next direct At The Mountains Of Madness, an adaptation of the HP Lovecraft tale that will be shot as a 3D film for Universal Pictures. The big surprise is that  Avatar director James Cameron will come aboard as a producer. Del Toro was non-committal when I asked him about the prospect of Mountains days ago as we discussed the Comic-Con reaction to Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. But when del Toro announced at Comic-Con he'd cowrite and produce Haunted Mansion, he told the crowd he'd set his next film shortly, and that it would be scary. At the Mountains of Madness fits that bill, even for del Toro and Universal.

The film will be a big ticket item, shot in 3D, where Cameron's expertise can really help. Cameron has said he won't put his name on many future movies outside of the 3D reboot of Fantastic Voyage at Fox, but I've heard he's making an exception for del Toro. Cameron's presence helped win over the studio. I'm told the film will begin pre-production in the next few weeks, and shoot next summer.

In the Lovecraft tale, a gruesome discovery made during a scientific expedition to the South Pole in the 1930s  hints at the true origin of mankind having come from elder gods from another planet. Bad things happen when those life forms are awakened.

The project is years in the works for del Toro and producers Susan Montford and Don Murphy, and it is easily the most ambitious project contemplated by the Pan's Labyrinth director. I just put the film high on the list of dream projects for the geek crowd, after it came up numerous times in discussion with geek-savvy film executives, writers and dealmakers.

Mountains was first set up at DeamWorks in 2004 by del Toro and Real Steel producers Montford and Murphy. Del Toro and Matthew Robbins wrote the script, which they are now retooling. The package was acquired by Universal when del Toro made a big overall deal there in 2007, when Universal green lit del Toro's Hellboy 2 and hoped to establish him as a cornerstone filmmaker. Those plans were put on hold when del Toro surprised the studio and accepted the offer to co-write and direct two installments of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Del Toro dropped out of that project earlier this summer, after completing the writing of the two films, and the design of the first  installment and half of the second. He cited the uncertainty of a production start due to the paralysis of MGM, which controls the rights along with Warner Bros. Del Toro pledged that he would return to the many plum projects his company is developing at Universal, including films like Frankenstein and the Kurt Vonnegut novel Slaughterhouse-Five. I’m confident that shortly he will be giving Universal one of the most ambitious films on its slate.

Great news, I hope Del Toro never has to be a gun for hire ever again, and with Cameron's backing, hell, he might even be getting an R-rated, big budget Lovecraft film off the ground.

How frigging cool is that?

Ip Man is yet another Asian blockbuster that plays better to the home crowd due to its quite high dose of patriotism.  Its almost like the Chinese got a copy of Rocky IV once it hit DVD and have been reverse engineering the formula ever since.  But what the hell, questionable politics aside, this is one kickass movie, with nary 10 minutes ever going by without somebody getting their face rocked (and faces get rocked rather thoroughly in this film).  Usually the faces getting rocked belong to those evil, nasty, murderous, E-V-I-L Japanese foreign invaders, but in a pinch, any face will do.

Man, they're so evil and foreign.

Donnie Yen brings his usual "Holy Shit I'm Donnie Yen" performance but makes a valiant effort at humility that he wears like an ill-fitting jacket.  The production design is so great you might be fooled into thinking, however momentarily, that the film you're watching even cares about accurately recreating China under imperial Japanese rule (nope).  So there's great production values, good music, awesome, awesome action, and a storyline that will only seem fresh if you were born yesterday.  But seriously, there's only a few Donnie Yen movies that matter for more then watching Donnie Yen strut his stuff, and man, that guy just LOVES to strut.

Oh yeah, and Riki Oh has a nice, juicy supporting role.  Yessssssssssss.

*** but lots of fun.

ps
the same distributor is putting out a R1 video release of the Russian-made 80's Afghanistan 'war' movie 9th Company.  Those guys must really dig nationalist sentiment/entertaining violence.  I'll be Netflixing the shit out of that.

Netflix seems pretty awesome, but I'm guessing new movies are delayed a month.  I tried to add Clash of the Titans and it said it won't be out until the 24th of August, but it is already in dvd/blu-ray.  No big deal.  at least Paul Blart: Mall Cop can be watched instantly  :o

Certain distributors make them delay their releases by a month. Anything by Universal, Warner Bros., or Fox is delayed.

This is exactly what I thought after watching it. It is Chinese Rocky IV. Apparently Ip Man 2 is the same thing, but they just replace the Japanese with the British.

It was so bad and ridiculous that I couldn't stop laughing. I love these type of bad movies. I could already tell from the commercials that it was gonna be bad so I wasn't expecting much. I at least thought that it was gonna be a horror movie though, not a movie about bad parenting and/or how females are the root of all problems. :lol

Yeah, some nice stuff in the opening 30 minutes, all undone by the last 30 of utter crap. Someone tell me why I bought the game of it after I saw it, please?

I kept thinking there was a juicy shot of Angelina's ass in it, but it's a tease from their public bath sequence. Morgan Freeman is doing whatever the opposite of stretching is. And, hey, rats like peanut butter, wtf?

Yeah I saw that in the credits. Other than one instance of recycling animation from earlier in the movie it is indeed awesome.

That shit is just ridiculous.  It's like an insane, white trash Grease.  Amazing.  I couldn't contain myself during the...

thunder storm scene where johnny depp says "i hate electricity, because electricity killed my parents!" and then he rips off his shirt and has a tattoo of an electric chair.  and then they set his bike on fire and crash it into the tent and he just picks it up and starts it like nothing.

So fucking ridiculous.

Step Brothers
I hate, hate, hate Will Ferrell as a main character.  I loved him in crap like old school and dodgeball but I hate Anchorman, Talladega Nights, that ice skating movie, etc.  My friends told me this movie wasn't his typical crap and he was a lot better in it.  It was the same thing!

"I'M YELLING AND SAYING RIDICULOUS SHIT AND TALKING ABOUT BALLS.  IS THIS FUNNY YET?"

It's like all his other movies.  They're funny in a few small parts but unbearable in most.

Antibodies (Antikörper) - sort of a German Silence of the Lambs.  Not so bad until it outrageously fumbles the last 20 - 30 minutes or so in a series of "twists" -- or rather, one very obvious turn of events that is still treated with bewildering dramatic music and flashbacks to events and correlations you could've only missed if you were fully asleep, and another that probably wouldn't have been so bad had it been of any consequence at all.  The climax is particularly ridiculous, involving a scene where the main character is saved from doing something truly terrible (and the audience is "saved" from a better ending) by a flock(?) of CG deer.

I sorta want to stab whomever it was that recommended I put this on my queue.

I know I do.

Comedies are one of the few things I'm picky about though.

I also sorta liked Lady in the Water, but I think only because I hated The Village SO MUCH and by comparison, it's not so bad, it's just repulsively smug as fuck.  I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

This is as much of a compliment as I can come up with.

I love both for concept over execution.  But there are absolutely terrible aspects to both.  It's why I can't complain when someone says they hate either.  I have a hard time articulating what i like about either except saying "it could have been so cool!"
