Eh.  It's partially my fault.  I picked a fight - well, stood up for my employees and track record - with a reigonal loss prevention and lost.

The official line is violation of company policy.  I had given an employee discount on one reserve pick-up from the owner of the nearby business that had supplied customers and employees with either free or heavily discounted services.  We had also plans to pair up for two more launches after it went over well with the customer base.

After an LP incident that occured the prior week, in which the store experienced no loss, we had a spat on how I internally coached my employees.  Not to mention my constant bickering over the lack of proper security measures (they just now installed a camera, on the day I was fired - lawl!) and my refusal to take a verbal reaming for accountability when I had signficantly reduced inventory shrink.  The result was that I had upset the person and that person began a close inspection of like all my transactions ever.

So for a single violation of company policy, and a first time offense from a highly reviewed employee that has had a Store Manager promoted underneath him, along with almost six or so keyholders, two first-ranked stores and adrastically improved new one - I was terminated.

The discount, all in all, was worth $5.  So I was fired, for $5.

The good news is that I have a couple of things lined up, but in this economy - who knows.

Eh, knowing is half the battle.

I wasn't rude or anything.  I had to wait almost two hours from writing and signing a statement to when the final verdict was reached.  I continued to work on the store, train new staff, etc.  When it was decided that my fate was to be cast away, I handed my keys over, shook my DM's hands and said thank you.

To his credit, he did score me an interview with a DM for another company tonight.

I feel the decision is pretty drastic, considering the context.  I had known a store manager who was caught on camera dozens of times making fraudelent returns and pocketing cash before the store opened - and even then he was suspended with pay and it took days to deliberate over his fate.  My fate seemed pretty sealed once I had ticked off Loss Prevention.

I guess everything happens for a reason!

And I'll be wearing that suit to my interviews, bud!

I tried to warn you that GS was lame, but nooooo.

Full detail on my firing:

I had pissed off my new DM after I had been redistricted.  Before I pissed him off, on the recommendation of my old DM he asked me to take over a problem store.  This place was an old funcoland store, so it was grimey and nasty, but was a top used store.  Lots of trade ins and used sales, good sub numbers, not so good reservation numbers.  I got in there and started turning around the organization, cleanliness, loss prevention etc issues.  My DM didn't like one of the keyholders there and wanted me to get rid of her, but I found that I was able to work with her just fine and she got the best numbers out of any of my employees- in fact, my first week she got THIRTY subscriptions.

So my DM didn't like me very much because I pushed back on staffing issues despite fixing everything that I had been sent there to fix.  Someone at corporate was monitoring GA (this was back in 2003) and I had made some posts intimating that I was a manager at GS.  Apparently they figured out it was me by matching my email address from my profile (doh, shouldn't have left that public) with the email address my DM had.  So after the new Madden came out, I made a bitchy post about how the launch had been fucked up- this was back before games showed up BEFORE street date, they got to stores on them.  But since we were still competing with EB back then (pre merger days) we rented a truck and had two dms drive up to an airport to pick them up off a plane to beat EB to street date on major titles.  The truck broke down and a bunch of rowdy Madden fans got bitchy at my store before I was able to get back.  I got threatened by idiots in the parking lot and didn't appreciate that, and made the mistake of posting about the details of the pick up and shit.  I was fired for "disclosing company secrets on a public forum".  Really, my DM didn't like me.  Petty shit, but standard in retail.

After that, I decided I would no longer take retail seriously because of bullshit like that.  I still worked in the industry for another three years, but I never gave ANYWHERE near as much of a shit as I had when I had been a manager at GS, because it's just not fucking worth it in shitty ass retail.

I don't mind being humbled.  When this person entered my store today, I even walked up and apologized for being contentious in phone talks earlier in the week and tried to understand his concerns.  His response was sarcastic and kind of unprofessional.

But when I take over a store, I guard my employees.  If someone is doing something stupid, that's one thing - but I'll never throw anyone underneath the bus.  Nor will I allow someone to throw them underneath the bus.  My willingness to take that to the end burnt me, though.  Learned a valuable lesson.  Nobody's job is as important as your own, I guess.

Jeez, Willco. That positively blows. It seems none of these major retail chains value the idea of taking initiative, or brokering business relationships on their behalf anymore. Such a damn shame, and so much the part of why retail is such a poor place to work/deal with anymore.

You seem like a smart guy, though, and I'm sure things will turn out well.

That stinks.  Sorry this happened Willco; you were fired for being a good manager and sticking up for your employees.   :-\  Unfortunately, echoing other retail survivors, I too must say "it was inevitable."  Retail just plain sucks.

My stint in retail hell lasted nine years.  It was actually a lot of fun the first few years, but as the economy got worse and also as the competition grew, the store began digging its own grave.  The worst was during my last year; the "district" manager (this was a mom n' pop retailer; we had 3-4 locations over the years) was this two-faced former-corporate manager guy (he managed a Target for a little while before burning out, I was told) who acted all nice in front you, then behind your back would ask the owners to fire you.  I am certain that the fuck-up I am about to explain was his fault, but I got the blame for it:

I was working at two locations at the time.  The one closest to me with people I liked, and one 45 minutes away with slacker high-school kids, a bitter store owner (can't say I blamed him with the place going down the shitter), and of course the "dm."  Generally I came in either in the morning until the late afternoon, or from the afternoon until closing at this location.  This particular day, I was on the afternoon shift.  I get there and the store owner is there by himself, and it being him, I didn't bother counting the money in the register.  No need to since it's the owner there, right?  WRONG.  When I close that evening, I am exactly $100 short.  I notice in the store log book that they were $200 short the night before, but the "dm" "fixed" things.  This kind of thing has happened before, so I don't worry about it and call the owner, who says they'll look into it in the morning.  Fine.

Two weeks later I get paid, and $100 is missing from my paycheck.  It's because of the money that was gone before.  So after doing some checking, I find out that-

-You are not legally allowed to withhold funds from a paycheck.  They can certainly fire me, but they cannot take away the money I am owed.

-The "dm" seemed to be somewhat fuzzy over whether or not the $200 thing from before was totally fixed.  There seemed to be $100 unaccountable from what I can remember.

-The "dm" who most of us already don't like was trying to get me and another guy fired for who knows how long (the owners shot him down every time though. especially because I "brought in customers." Awesome)

So I talk to my father (who is a lawyer) about this multiple times over the phone before the "dm" comes to find out if I want to quit or not after having had it out with the store owner over the phone.  My father decides that given my situation, I might as well eat the money and stick it out just a little bit longer.  This was because at the time I was waiting to hear if I would be accepted into the JET Program and go to Japan; quitting and looking for work for what could have been only a few weeks would have been difficult.

And as it turns out, like a week after this incident, they called me to tell me I made it into JET.  I had never been grinning so wide before when I called that store owner to tell him I was gone.  Despite this bullshit, I still ended up staying two weeks longer than I said I would.  The stores would later close down completely at the end of the year, but one location got converted into a poker chips/cards retailer, still owned by the same people.  I heard from someone that the "dm" was still working there, but that was like two years ago.

jesus, i and all my fellow employees used to do all kinds of shady shit with our employee discounts -- even when i worked at coach, where the higher-ups would can your ass for the tiniest hint of any sort of fraud. we'd give our discounts out like candy, lie that friends were actually relatives, and once i even gave my discount to a goddamn stranger. never once did anyone get any shit for anything, and a lot of the time the managers were in on it.

seems like a really cheap reason to get fired, especially since they had another manager who was outright ripping them off (that shit with botching returns).

See, it's shit like this that bugs me about this company, seeing good people let go for one strike against them while at the same time keeping people around that have been out and out stealing from them for the better part of five years with no type of diciplinary action at all passed on them. But the LP Department will swear they have the same rules for everyone. I'm glad that I left that place when I did.

Sorry about how you got let go Wilco, but you're a better person now that you're gone from there

I feel bad for whomever gets my old store.  I just hired an entirely green staff, inventory is in three days, I had overhauled the backroom organization and was willing to put the store on my back to ride out the holidays.  As a result, the store was at or above regional average in every sales category for the first time in years.

Going to be rough for the next Store Manager they install in there.

Sorry to hear about it, but you almost certainly did the right thing by standing up for your workers. In the long run, they'll remember what you did, take your example out in the world. Sounds like you lost an OK job because of a crappy person. You will probably be better off for this, when you look back 6 months down the line.

Sorry to here about your job loss Willco. I was also a manager who was victim to Gamestop's bullshit firings. Good luck on the job hunt though as it's fucking rough out there right now. It took me 6 months with 60+ applications to find a job, and out of those 60+ I had ONE interview which is where I'm at now. It's pretty bad right now as I have several friend who've been living off of unemployment for the past few month and nobody will hire them because they're "over qualified".

I think enough drive and sincere interest can reduce the relevance of even a fancy uni degree. If anything I experience real world experience over beer bong parties and cramming for finals.
