Okay, half an hour in and I just ran into the first necromorphs (yeah, I'm playing really slowly).

This game is frickin' awesome.

Movement and camera feel great and menu is indeed utterly kick-ass.

only got up to chapter 3 but the game is great so far, my favorite of the year. the dismembering mechanic is so satisfying. the best part about it is that it shows those tank fucking re4 fans that it is indeed possible to create tension while still allowing your character control like a human being as opposed to some kind of bumfuck distinguished mentally-challenged fellow robot. i hope capcom adopts this control scheme or they will be left behind.

I love how the camera moves in relation to the character.  It's goddamn brilliant.  I love RE4 and I'll live if it's the same in RE5, but I agree that Dead Space seriously sets a new standard in the genre.

I kind of figured when you find the captain's corpse is considered the first "boss." Even those those things aren't so hard, they don't really show up much in the rest of the game.

and they're the same as Dead Space sans moving while shooting.

So -1 RE5.

I'm aware that what we've seen so far of RE5 has been picked and designed to make us remember RE4 so that they can wow us later in the game. I'm skeptical that they can pull through because unlike some others, I don't see view Capcom as this awesomely amazing game company.

I wasn't really expecting Dead Space to be scary as such, just hoping for an awesome unsettling atmosphere.  But last night when I was heading back towards the ship (yeah, I'm still playing really slowly), I could feel my heart getting faster - it was really tense.  I can't remember a game ever trying to be scary and affecting my heartbeat as a result, looks like this game genuinely will be scary.

Hard difficulty is perfect - I had to conserve ammo carefully quite a few times.  Although now that I've reached the first shop, I suspect I won't be low on ammo again.

:bow Dead Space - saviour of survival horror this gen :bow2

I really liked the zero g parts the game.  I think they could have made a really awesome puzzle game with that aspect alone.

I'll go faster as I get further in, but I'm thinking it might be 15-20 hours first time through for me.  I wander about a lot and hardly ever use the run button.  I'd be happy if I got 12 hours out of it though.

How are you finding impossible compared to hard?

Since I end up using the base pistol in most games, I thought I'd do my first run with just the plasma cutter to get the achievement.  I'm thinking subsequent playthroughs using all weapons will not be very hard in comparison.

After Nicole attacked Issac, it cut back to him taking off his helmet, making it look like he was crazy as shit. Only this time the orange screen thing wasn't up(then it cut to the logo). When I originally saw it she attacked him then it cut to the logo.

I'm trying to figure out if the second one was a crafty edit, or if there's an extended ending. Because I honestly don't want him to die. Ive already made a connection with Issac and hit motives for going on the mission, so I'm not looking forward to playing as someone else in the sequel.

Side note: is anyone planning on picking up the movie? I was considering it since I'm interested in experiencing the full story but I want impressions first.

The animated one? I'd consider it, depending on the extras. The Metal Gear Solid 2 special DVD with all that "the making of" stuff was great!

Just watched the movie. It was decent. If it wasn't connected to the game I would never have watched it, though. There's a few things here and there that directly connect it to the game IE:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The video log of the crazy white dude at the end killing the captain (only slightly different)

It's mostly just pretty neat to see creature from the game in the movie, like the giant flying bat things that actually turn the dead bodies. I also think it hints at who the

regenerator

is.

Also the ending doesn't 100% match up with the beginning of the game.

Great game, but they should rename it to "Errand boy trapped on big ship".  It worked well for the pacing especially with THE BEST BUTTON EVER R3, but it was still pretty  :lol that the entire game is just people asking you to do dozens of errands and pretty much everything you could think of outside of getting them a cup of coffee.  In fact the game should have opened up with that to get you ready of the rest of the game.

[game starts on repair ship flying towards Ishimura]
Hammond:  Issac, can you get me some coffee?  It's been a long day.
(objective added:  Retrieve coffee cup)
(Tutorial:  Objects will be added when people ask you for things.  Use R3 to guide you and go retrieve the coffee cup)
(Press O to continue)
[player retrieves coffee cup, walks back to Hammond]
Hammond:  Thanks!   That hit the spot.
[Objective complete]
Hammond:  Now sit down and prepare for landing.
[Objective added:  Sit on chair]

Started playing, PC version, game introduces monsters way too soon, like it's in a hurry, it didn't build it up at all, "Oh here, ok whatever, CRASH, now quick, here see? MONSTERS!!!" christ sakes, build it up man.

Anyway, looks amazing, and it's kinda scary because of the sound. Main character has a name, a face, but doesn't talk...what's up with that anyway?

good game but the scares it became entirely to predicable after the first few chapters (i've gotta move this stuff. i wonder if i'll be attacked?). also you could cheese the shit out of killing most of the enemies by standing near a doorway keeping it open and luring enemies there because they usually can't exit the room.

walk in room, trigger fight, stand near doorway and kill with no worries.

the game wowed me in many ways tho. zero g, the holographic displays, the last boss fight. WOW.

i have a story question.

since issac was crazy why didn't hammond tell him nicole was dead? or was the last part of the video kept from him by kendra?

As things stand right now, this is GOTY for sure. There is an adventure feel to this that you don't find in many games, where you can't resist going in what you know is the wrong direction just because. And the 5-way corridor choice points are genuinely unnerving.

Played 4 chapters in one sitting today, saving the final one for tonight. It's hard to come up with complaints on this game.. I only have nitpicks: the map is horrible and I would've liked an RE4 style quick 180 turn. Otherwise... an incredibly polished action game that I'm gonna replay immediately after the credits roll by. It came out of nowhere and blew me away.

You almost never need the map because of the blue line, but it's still a clusterfuck to look at

Holy crap this game is bonkers good.  I've just hit 11 hours and chapter 5 and I'm loving every second of it.  My GOTY thus far by a mile.

In a sea of relative perfection, I agree the map could be improved by just allowing you to move it rather than pivot around a central point.  During Chapter 4 it wasn't even centred on me the majority of the time.

But it's a tiny thing.

dead space is good but does have some serious flaws. enemies should be able to come through all open doors instead of stopping at the threshold allowing me to pick them off with ease.

it's also way too predictable for a horror game.

How is that even possible?  It's not like there are sidequests or huge areas to explore or NPCs to talk to.  You walk in a linear path through small rooms and shoot things.  My ch.12 clear time was ~10 hours, I don't see how times could vary that much in this game.

Ah, ok yeah I never went back to store stuff.  I could see how doing that would add a lot of time.  I'd just sell everything in my inventory each time I got to a shop outside 1-2 things of ammo for each gun and a medpack.  That way I'd usually have enough empty spaces to pick up everything on the way to the next store.

Yeah, I've got a boatload of medpacks and stasis recharge items stored that I intend to sell at the end of the first playthrough.  I'm also skipping the third rig (and maybe fourth) in order to save the credits to buy power nodes instead.  So I don't have a lot of inventory slots.

I've been selling all ammo except plasma until now, but I'm thinking maybe I should keep some ammo for the second playthrough when I'm getting the 30 kills with each gun achievement.

You get a lot of money by the end of the game though.

I never bought a power node though.  Just used the ones I found and I had over 100k left at the end.  I bought every suit as soon as it become available and towards the end bought a lot of ammo for my good guns.  Also bought some medkits.
