General / Real Talk / I just came up with another idea for fixing my "not having a PC" conundrum. on: October 17, 2007, 10:39:31 AM
I'm sitting here all day with a monitor and an ethernet cable handy, why not put them to work in a form factor PC like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101032. I could haul it to work and haul it home without any trouble, just plugging it in into the monitor at work and the bad-ass tv at home, when I get it.
What all needs to go immediately in this machine that it does not have?

I google search and every link has their shit in a different file format, one is a zip with a .exe and a .rom inside, the next link has all in .bin.
Please evilbore, steer me in the right direction.

Partitions, a Recipe for Disaster
A bunch of UC Berkeley nerds
A few random other people
A couple of Microsoft employees
A Dumbass who didn’t know the difference between Logical and Physical Drives
A teaspoon of Starforce and Delusion
Stir until Total Data Loss
The Honeymoon

Man, I Needed Some Wallpaper

A Few Weeks Later
One day at work, my boss, Miles, tells me of this wonder called PC-BSD.
I investigate because Windows is being annoying (“In use by another configuration.” I have the Vista case right here.)
The Installation goes smooth until the screen where you choose the partition.
Only one is listed. Hmm…
oh god how did this get here I am not good with computer

A Few Notes
UNIX does not require (but still uses in some instances) file extensions, but yet still does file associations in much the same manner as Windows.
This is a mystery still to this one.
.PBI files work sort of the same way setup.exe and MSIs work in Windows but a lot of PBIs are broken, but hopefully that was fixed in 1.4.1.1
UNIX is Nice, and That Was Going to Be the End of the Story
Until yesterday, when I decided I wanted to actually use the PC for gaming, most noble of computer endeavors.
There is nothing redeeming about gaming on *nix, aside from various quake derivatives (Warsow, Open Arena) that already exist on Windows.
I’m not playing old console and arcade games with a keyboard, it’s for the birds.
The Road Back to the Promised Land
Well, why don’t we just use PartitionMagic to create a new Primary Partition?
The copy IT had was old and did not support large hard drives.
QTParted scares me.
So it was decided, reinstall Windows and use it’s own partitioning software.
Why Won’t It Boot From a CD/DVD?
If it won’t boot from CD, then some thing must be wrong with the BIOS. Fiddle with it.
Turn off all boot devices except the CD Drive. Still boots from the Hard Drive.
Those damn dirty commies from California must’ve hacked my BIOS.
I set my bios to fail-safe. Upon Reboot, will not go past Pentium 4 screen.
Unplug the battery from the mobo, it resets.
Let’s See If We Can Get It To Boot an Ubuntu LiveCD Because Some Interstellar Cockstain Is Preventing the Vista DVD From Booting
We finally get it to boot into a Ubuntu liveCD.
I leave it installing while I go to lunch.
I come back, Miles tells me that you cannot order it to boot from CD using a USB keyboard. It must be PS/2.
Fuuuuccckkk!
I install Vista again, citing I did (in fact) wish I knew this shit earlier.
The Happy Ending

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When pretty much everything in my life had turned to shit, two people from a faraway land that I've never seen with my own two eyes, have never met, and may never meet, sent me two packages that rocked my face so hard I didn't know how to react. I realize my initial post in this thread was confusing as fuck. The above pictures and text describe what I am on about, although still not well.
