Barack Obama should be the Doctor, since he's going to lose the election to Bob Barr.  He won't have anything better to do.

Frankly, what with Patrick Stewart being on Doctor Who in the future, I would get heap big boner if they convinced him to be the Doctor.

I heard that with Steven Moffat now head of Dr Who for the next series that he was looking to see if he could get James Nesbitt involved.

I could live with Nesbitt as the Dr. ... now i have a huge man crush on all the Irish actors.

:bow Jekyll :bow2
:bow In Bruges :bow2
:bow Irish people :bow2

Moffat takes over in the 2010 series.  Mr. Davies controls it, completely until then.  Basically, Moffat gets the chance to reboot the whole show in 2010, and there is no real indication of who will be the new Doctor.

I would like Nesbitt.  I would love Patrick Stewart.  I would like the dude that played Jess on Coupling.  That said, i think BBC will try to pick someone as young and energetic as Tennant.  David Tennant was the biggest Doctor since Baker.  Maybe even bigger.

What a crock -- half of the reason we're being cheated out of a full series next year was that they wanted to accommodate Tenant's schedule.  So they pull this "4 specials" bullshit, and he quits anyway?  Fuck......boot him out the door now so we can get a full season in 2009.

I guess Series 5 will really be an almost-total reset.  New companion, new Doctor, and Moffat at the wheel.  It's a shame we didn't get at least 1 Moffat/Tennant season.

The regeneration wouldn't be as special as it was in the first season.  When he changed in Season 1 I thought "whoa, he's young and can bang Rose now!", this time they would need to pull off something really amazing to get a similar reaction.

Yeah, I bet it will be. Obviously the first regeneration storylinewise was to a version that would be more favorable with Rose and humans in general. The Ninth Doctor, or, as I like to call him, the Combat Doctor, was obviously a regeneration that was affected by the Time War against the Daleks making him more ruthless. Since the likelihood is that the Doctor didn't have a companion during the Time War, it would explain his abrasiveness toward humans occasionally since he did not regenerate around humans and wasn't around humans that much.

This regeneration will be special on its own merits and, as usual, they could really take it in any direction.

Still, I will be sad to see the current Doctor go and I will remember him as one of my favorite doctors. BUT, of course, this presents problems with the storyline in the library two parter of Season Four where the Doctor is recognized by one of his future (and evidently close) companions, meaning that Moffat will have to resolve this sooner than later, as in one of these four specials.

Not really.  When asked about this, either the producers or Moffat himself said that there's always the implication that the Doctor goes on adventures that we do not see.

My thoughts exactly.  Oh well.  Since Moffat isn't writing any of the specials, maybe this means he will be able to dedicate a lot of time to making an awesome arc, or authoring multiple episodes.

It looks like the next Doctor may be English actor David Morrisey. The bookies certainly have him as favourite to replace Tenant:

Quote
[David Morrisey] will be in the 2008 Christmas special of Doctor Who, "The Next Doctor", as seen in the trailer at the end of Series 4 episode "Journey's End".

After the week-long speculation stemming from the events of The Stolen Earth in June 2008, Morrisey was the favourite of various bookies to be revealed as the successor to David Tennant in the role of the Eleventh Doctor.

This speculation was further renewed following the announcement of David Tennant departure form the role.

That's a swerve, I think.  Having him in one of the specials titled as The Next Doctor, and then having him actually be the real next Doctor?  It just seems so obvious that I can't believe it's true.  And I think it being an RTD episode with Moffat having nothing to do with it also casts doubt on this.

Also, he was in Basic Instinct 2 and I can't forgive him for that.

He's handing the show over to Moffat, including producer duties.  It would be a real dick move for him to get to pick the next Doctor when he's only responsible for 5 more hours of programming.

Well, in any case, both RTD and Moffat are sensible enough to consult one and other on this issue, I think.

It should be a choice that is in harmony with both writers' vision of the Doctor.

After all, if it wasn't for RTD, we wouldn't have Tennant.

And seriously, where is Tennant really going to find a better gig than this?

It would be interesting if the 2009 specials did have Tennant working alongside the new Doctor.  Can 2 Doctors meet without some kind of universe-imploding paradox?  I'm assuming the Tennant/Davison team up for Time Crash was a "for fun" sort of thing that isn't really considered cannon.

Weird thing that I discovered on Wikipedia today:

What Simpsons episode is this from?  What is the context?

There are a couple episodes like that.  The Two Doctors, The Three Doctors, etc.  I think they go up to The Five Doctors.

Tennant apparently gets raves for his stage work.  I guess he feels the time is now or risk being further typecast.  Personally, I haven't seen anything that convinces me he can actually act, but if he's getting awesome reviews doing Shakespeare, more power to him.  Tom Baker's career trajectory is scary scary, and I can understand why he wants out if he thinks he can go higher.

The chameleon circuit on the Master's TARDIS worked, so it actually blended into the environment.  Like in Logopolis it's a column, and another time it was a large cabinet/cupboard thing.

Man, watching the Fatal Death, I wish Rowan Atkinson had been given a crack at the role.  Of course, if he had been given a shot at his peak, back in the 80s, we would have missed some classic Black Adder.  If only we could have a Blackadder Who.

One bookmaker now has Patterson Joseph 3-1 on to replace Tennant as the first black Doctor:

Quote
Patterson Joseph (3-1)
With the US poised to elect its first ever African American leader, surely the time is perfect for the Tardis to get its first black master. Patterson Joseph has already popped up in a couple of episodes of Doctor Who back in Christopher Eccleston’s day. Like Tennant, the mercurial Patterson’s got theatrical pedigree and gravitas – he’s a current darling of the National Theatre – yet will have the air of comforting approachability thanks to his roles in Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look.

Here is a list of some possible candidates with differing odds. Though how the bookies work out these odds god only knows:

Quote
David Morrissey (Bookies’ odds: 5-1)
What could be more marvellous than watching David Tennant’s face dissolve in a multicoloured swirl of light, and reassemble in the form of… David Morrissey? The last time these two terrific actors sparred was in the musical drama Blackpool (2004). Now, they’d have all time and space to compare Time Lord chops. Where Tennant played up the adorably puckish angle, Morrissey would be craggy and brooding. He’s so tall he’d have to dip his head going into the Tardis; but fortunately, it’s bigger on the inside.

(Image removed from quote.)

Robert Carlyle (14-1)
Another Scottish Doctor? It’s hard to imagine the steely little Robert Carlyle, so brilliant at psychos (think Begbie in Trainspotting), coming from the same galaxy let alone the same country as David Tennant. His doctor would be smooth on the outside but there’d be a latent sense of otherworldliness that might just jump out and bite you. The fans’ favourite in the summer to take on the role when rumours first started flying that Tennant might desert the show – he’s a Doctor who’d be frightening the baddies right back.

Catherine Tate (25-1)
Female Time Lords have already appeared in previous episodes of Doctor Who, but having the Doctor himself regenerate as a woman would certainly be revolutionary. If James Bond’s M can be played by Judi Dench, there’s surely an opening for a mature, witty and authoritative lady Doctor. Catherine Tate – having had her previous memories of being the Doctor’s sidekick erased – might yet get the job. Tate’s got a proven comic flair that will keep us laughing as we hide behind the sofa; and her feminine sensibility might even mean the Tardis gets a makeover.

Rhys Ifans (8-1)
Since his film-stealing role as Hugh Grant’s layabout flatmate in Notting Hill, Rhys Ifans has shown an idiosyncratic approach to life and his choice of roles that might make him an ideal Doctor. The dishevelled air of lunacy this actor cultivates could translate into a Whovian alienness not seen since Tom Baker’s tenure, yet Ifans’s undoubted charisma would still give his Doctor the necessary authority. And with the programme now based in Cardiff, how apt it would be for it to have a Welsh Doctor.

John Simm (8-1)
Although the decision to appoint the next Doctor won’t be made until next year, it’s worth remembering who will be making it: Russell T Davies’s successor Steven Moffat, the writer of some of the scariest episodes of recent series, including Blink and Silence in the Library. Tennant was excitable and family-friendly; will Moffat’s Doctor be a shade or two darker? John Simm is well used to starring in TV dramas with a serrated edge (State of Play, Crime and Punishment) and, best of all, is an experienced time-traveller thanks to Life on Mars. One snag: he’s already popped up in Doctor Who, playing The Master in three episodes in 2007.

And finally, an outside contender who appeared as the Doctor in a one off Doctor Who tv movie in 1996: Paul Mcgann

Keep in mind though, the next Doctor could be any or none of the above. This is just healthy speculation.

It's NOT going to be a woman.  People should get it out of their heads.  Time Lords have set genders.  No Time Lord has ever regenerated into a different gender.  GOOD DAY SIR.

Man, I hope not. Especially Cathrine Tate, she's so annoying.
