I started reading this series today  :D

Avoid spoilers at all costs my man. I think I've done a good job of tagging spoilers in this thread/other related threads, but that can't be said of everyone

Hell, create a spoiler free thread for discussion just in case. A couple things got spoiled for me while reading, but not because I stumbled on them in a thread - I flipped ahead a few pages on one occasion just to see if someone was really dead  :lol

HBO appoints subjects to 'Thrones'
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau joins Sean Bean in pilot
By James Hibberd
Aug 20, 2009, 11:00 PM ET

HBO is filling out the cast of its fantasy pilot "Game of Thrones" with the addition of former "New Amsterdam" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and several others.

The group joins the previously cast lead Sean Bean as battle-weary Ned Stark, who leaves his home to serve the king. Mark Addy, Kit Harrington, Jennifer Ehle, Jack Gleeson, Peter Dinklage and Harry Lloyd also star.

In the adaptation of the George R.R. Martin fantasy-book series, Coster-Waldau will play Jaime Lannister, one of the king's guards and a ruthless usurper of the previous king. The actor, most recently seen in Ron Moore's Fox pilot "Virtuality," is repped by WME, Impression and Independent Talent Group.

Another addition is Tamzin Merchant (Showtime's "The Tudors"), who'll play Daenerys, an exiled teenage princess.

Also new to the cast: Richard Madden ("Hope Springs") as Stark's eldest son, Robb; Iain Glen ("Into the Storm") as Ser Jorah Mormont, a disgraced knight; Alfie Allen ("The Other Boleyn Girl") as Theon, Stark's young ward; Sophie Turner ("Doctor Who"), as Stark's eldest daughter, Sansa; Maisie Williams as Stark's young tomboy daughter, Arya.

The group joins the previously cast lead Sean Bean as battle-weary Ned Stark who leaves his home to serve the king, Mark Addy, Kit Harrington, Jennifer Ehle, Jack Gleeson, Peter Dinklage and Harry Lloyd.

HBO still has a few more roles to fill in the large ensemble cast of "Thrones," one of the more buzzed-about titles on the premium network's development slate. The pilot shoots in Ireland in October.

David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Guymon Casady, Carolyn Strauss, Vincent Gerardis and Martin are executive producing.

Jaime

Robb

My initial reaction to the Jaime casting was "hmm, not pretty enough." But the more I look at this guy, the more it makes sense.

GRRM speaks. He has some pics of Arya and Sansa as well; the pics are pretty small though

plus a fan vid of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau which sells me even more. He's perfect.

I'm excited to see any fantasy that isn't YA-oriented hit the screens. I don't mind YA fiction at all, but jesus does all fantasy have to be about fucking nerdy, magic orphans with mean step-parents?

On Malazan: picked up Deadhouse Gates or whatever the 2nd book is, having taken the better part of a year to finish Gardens of the Moon over my three attempts to read it. Good stuff, but thick.

Cersei has been cast :drudge

Quote
All the major roles for HBO's "Game of Thones" pilot have been filled in recent weeks -- except one.

I can exclusively reveal that Lena Headey, most recently seen as Sarah Connor in Fox's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," will play Cersei Lannister, a woman of royal blood who is every bit as smart, cunning and devious as the powerful men around her.

Other cast members include the perfectly cast Peter Dinklage as Cersei's brother Tyrion, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Cersei's twin, Jaime, Sean Bean as aristocrat Ned Stark, Jennifer Ehle as his wife Catelyn Stark and Mark Addy as King Robert.

The "Game of Thrones" pilot, an adaptation of a fantasy novel by George R.R. Martin, starts shooting in late October in Northern Ireland.

She was Leonidas' queen in 300  :drool

She's not the uber hot goddess you'd expect for Cersei but she's still good looking. Can't wait to see her in set pics

Really excited for this. I've never actually read past the first book (even though I thought it was great), but I'm rereading AGoT now and have the other three sitting right here with the full intention of getting through them.

Drogo is too...handsome looking. I expected a big ass dude with powerful loins, crushing coconuts with his fingers

I'll have to wait to see the Dany actress in makeup/costume. There are some good pictures of her out there but in many she just looks...off, not in a good way. The book describes her as a strange beauty. Tamzin Merchant definitely looks strange...

If the pilot gets picked up it would have to be a bomb of epic proportions not to have at least two seasons imo. HBO admits they fucked up canceling Rome; at the time they didn't take DVD sales into account in their decision to keep/drop shows. And another problem with Rome was shooting in Italy which is damn expensive. They're shooting Thrones in Ireland which isn't expensive, and Morroco (which is more expensive, but not at Italy's level).

The problem might eventually come down to the series' expansion of scope. The second book has a huge ass battle scene involving a city defending itself from siege and a naval combat involving tons of ships. I hope it doesn't turn into a giant ugly CG fest

The question is if GRRM will even get all seven books done by the time HBO is ready for seasons to be made of them.

If Raimi could make the Sword of Truth series 1000000x better than the shitty books, then there's no reason why this series will bomb.

I'd imagine they'll combine AFFC and ADWD over two seasons; AFFC may have worked as a book (depending on who you ask) but dropping large amounts of popular characters for an entire season would probably be TV suicide.

Also anyone else think the actors for Theon (16) and Viserys (17) should be switched lol?

He makes a brief appearance in the tourney that they hold at King's Landing after everyone gets back if memory serves.  The one that Loras Tyrell wins riding a mare in heat, and the Hound saves him after Gregor tries to kill the girly knight.

Filming on the Game of Thrones pilot is complete. This was confirmed via a Julia Frey blog post. The last few days were all night shoots, with the last day of filming being a Tue night/Wed morning shoot. Yesterday was the wrap party and today the cast and crew are packing up and heading home.

Now it is onto post-production: editing, effects, sound, etc. Depending on how polished HBO wants this pilot to be before making a decision, that work could take a few weeks or a few months. We know Modern VideoFilm will be doing some work on the pilot in February. GRRM mentioned a decision from HBO in March. I tend to think it will be earlier than that though as HBO generally likes to make quick decisions. I'm holding out hope for an early Christmas present from HBO.
http://winter-is-coming.blogspot.com/

Now we wait. The visual effects staff seems pretty legit, including people who worked on the John Adams miniseries. Obviously Thrones won't have as big of a budget, it seems fair to say the effects technologies used in Adams will find their way into Thrones. Especially considering the show's visual effects supervisor worked extensively on Adams

Holy shit, imagine that technology bringing Winterfell to life, or the Wall. All my initial worries about effects went out the window the minute I watched that video

Yea man, it knocked me away. I've seen cgi used like that but never imagined it that being paired with this show. They turn sunny days into snowy nights in 1776 cotttdamnn.

Winterfell could be brought to life so well, or the wall. Initially I thought it might be this big ugly green screen backdrop but not anymore.  :o

I'd be shocked if this pilot doesn't get the green light.

Um, I wouldn't be pinning your hopes and dreams on John Adams as an example of how HBO will treat this.

John Adams was originally going to be a full 12 part mini-series like 1776 will be, but at the last minute during shooting HBO destroyed the budget and forced them to cut it down to 7 parts (which is why some episodes are much longer than others).

HBO: 'Games of Thrones' dailies 'look fantastic'
TCA -- HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo says the dailies for highly anticipated fantasy series "Game of Thrones" look "fantastic" and the project looks very strong for a series pickup.

"Everything looks fantastic," said Lombardo, who's become a fan of the George R.R. Martin books upon which the project is based. "The director got great performances. Unlike a lot of projects like this, everything was shot on location. It has such a rich texture that it looks more expensive than it actually was."

The network spent $5 million-$10 million on the pilot to bring castle Winterfell to life. Lombardo says executives are "sitting on pins and needles" waiting for a rough cut in two weeks.

"The fantasy is so incidental, it has a very adult tone," Lombardo said. "You forget it's fantasy while you're watching it, and that's what I love about it."

The pilot will employ some CGI, for backgrounds, the story's "direwolves" (a mixture of real animals and CGI) and dragon eggs.

Also, like in the books, each family in the story will have its own color pallet for clothing and armor.

If all goes well, Lombardo said, "Game of Thrones" will be on HBO in spring 2011 -- "March or April."

"I would be surprised if it doesn't [get greenlit]," Lombardo said. "It has everything going for it."

From Matt Roush (TV Guide) on Twitter:
HBO programming chief tells me they'll see pilot of Game of Thrones in 2 wks. Dailies look good; more scripts written.

Amazing news. I thought they'd be working on it into Feb, and HBO would see it and make final decisions in March. Sounds like post-production ended rather quickly, well at least compared to what was expected.

The programming chief sounds pretty damn excited. There's no fucking way they don't pick the show up. :bow

New Dany
Quote
As has been put forth (and finally confirmed by George R. R. Martin’s Not A Blog), English actress Emilia Clarke has assumed the role of Daenerys Targaryen recently vacated by Tamzin Merchant. And yes, that would be Clarke with an “e.”

Emilia’s experience is limited; she’s barely out of drama school, having attended the prestigious Drama Centre London. But Emilia has done some work, appearing in the role of Saskia Mayer in the drama DOCTORS: EMPTY NEST, as well as the two Lisa’s Story commercials for Samaritans.

George says:

Our new Daenerys is a beautiful and talented young actress named Emilia Clarke, a recent graduate of Drama Centre London.
http://winter-is-coming.net/2010/05/emilia-clarke-is-daenerys/

I like her eyes. Lacks the striking yet odd beauty I imagined Dany to have, but I'd say she's definitely an upgrade over Merchant. And apparently she can act.

Interestingly Martin seemed kinda bummed Merchant was being dropped in blog posts praising her recent work on The Tudors. I wonder whether HBO made the decision to get rid of her, or if she changed her mind about potentially being tied to one show for multiple seasons.

I'm sold.

Only thing I don't like...her face is kinda flabby and undefined (especially in those side shots). The Targs have pretty sharp facial features, at least in my mind. She's gonna need to lose some weight

I'm in the middle of the second book right now. I sorta put it down for a few months though.

This looks good though. I'm not creaming myself over the books but I will give the series a try. SEAN BEAN IS FUCKING NED STARK. Best cast ever.

Its a great series of books. Its one of those things that has its ebb and flow of awesomeness but its so easily consumed. You just become so interested in certain characters that you're just compelled to keep going at a steady pace.

Tonight, turn to HBO at 8:45 ET/PT for a very special True Blood pre-show and get a taste of what's to come on Hung, Entourage, Bored to Death, Eastbound and Down and our newest dramas, Boardwalk Empire & Game of Thrones.

Does indeed look as great as 10 seconds could be expected to look. Nails the look and feel, I think. Pity it's still so far away - I just bought all the books again on Kindle (they were cheap!) so am in the mood for this.
