The "Friends Only" tag?

I hope so, that would solve every mature content/copyright problem in one fell swoop

No, I meant the image importing.

nah, i think it was something they were working on and planned for, but all this copyright hooha would just make it a nightmare to police

they need to add that "Friends Only" tag, and add it quick, to make everyone happy

Year of the PS3 triumphantly marches on.  I also like the growing consensus in the GAF thread where 2009 is the real year of the PS3.

To be fair, Sony's only certain mainstream hit releases in 2009. But yeah, it's becoming message board slapstick.

If you want bad, check out the guy who has a list of games for 2009 -- a list with only one confirmed 2009 and 'secret PS3 game' on it.

didn't LBP officially miss its October release?

even so jinfash am cry

October 24st is when myself and others who preordered at Gamestop got it, October 28th is when it launched everywhere.

Being realistic here, the PS3 has been dying for a while now.  It still will have great games here or there, but it will never see huge sales here or Japan.  Maybe Europe, but that's Europe.

There is no waiting game. Who cares if the game you bought and like sold 10 copies or 10M, you still only bought 1.

It's not like Sony isn't releasing games. MotorStorm 2, R2, and LBP all in the past few weeks. That's not bad. I'm not even sure what "wait for" means these days. Wait for something to happen that causes Sony to rocket past the competition straight to the top? That's not going to happen. They will have a huge hit with Killzone 2, but that's not going to cause any radical changes to hardware sales.

So how much is KZ2 gonna sell first month duckman?

A lot, at least for a PS3 game. Killzone 2 is going to be big. It's perfectly marketable, and has the look, production values and game quality to match the hype (well, MP does).

Those Rock Band numbers were LTD, so they include the month where it was 360 exclusive.  GHWT *did* outsell Rock Band 2 in october.
And in the month it was exclusive it sold:

What does the word 'mainstream' mean again?

Not the shitstream of dumbasses that Nintendo is catering to and capitalizing on, if that's what you're wondering. That's a whole different market right there.

Poor Nintendo core fans. In the time of success, they are left behind to rot.

So 400k and then out of the top 10?

Am I too high or too low? That'd give it the second-best first month sales of any PS3 exclusive, behind MGS4 - you know, the last game that was perfectly marketable, and had the look, production values and game quality to match the hype, plus a built in fanbase.

What were the first month sales of the last game with stunning graphics and tons of critical appeal that ripped off a popular new game's gameplay and released in November? 70k?

The biggest reason why Killzone 2 probably won't sell that well is because Sony can't market anything properly.

Did you see the new holiday PS3 ads? the average person is too dumb to notice the subtle Motorstorm PR clip in the bottom left corner playing in a puddle of water.  What the hell were they thinking? Their marketing has almost become a parody of it self at this point.

So it's a separate demographic of dumbasses?  ???

But srsly. People like to throw buzzwords like that around, but unless it sells a significant chunk (most would like to think Halo levels at least), it wouldn't classify under that umbrella.

MGS is nowhere near as marketable as Killzone 2, though. It had a fanbase, but that also meant that it had a base of people who would hesitate to play any MGS. It was also nowhere near as striking looking as this, nor was it in as popular of a genre.

The only way that Killzone 2 could be stopped from becoming one of the bigger success stories of this generation would be if Sony completely dropped the ball on marketing, and they would have to actively try to sabotage that in order to fuck it up. If anything, I'd almost bet on that the shitty marketing surrounding other recent games is a direct result of them saving it up for the big one, aka Killzone 2. We'll see, but it's a few cuts above anything else on the system, not least in marketability.

And what's this about some game ripping off another game's gameplay? Which games are you talking about here, and how does Killzone 2 fit into the argument.

The biggest reason why Killzone 2 probably won't sell that well is because Sony can't market anything properly.

They will market this one. They already did it well with Killzone, and that was with a barely functioning product to push. The game damned near markets itself.

Yea, Sony has no chance of completely dropping the ball on marketing  ::)

Still waiting for a first month sales prediction. 5x Uncharted sounds pretty fair for a release in the worst sales period of the year.

Gears -> Uncharted, CoD4 -> Killzone 2

After playing through LBP it's kind of baffling that anyone would've thought that this game could be the one that would attract a larger audience to the PS3.  Even with it's appealing design, it's decidedly a hardcore/niche experience.

I'll never understand why some people think that it's reasonable to think that a sequel to a game that did pretty good on a 100 million userbase would have no problem matching or even surpassing that on a userbase that's less than 1/5th the size.

The two player mode is actually really helpful when playing with the kid. Makes it easier to get her to jump and run in the right direction, and it resets her character at the checkpoints so she doesn't have to deal with all the obstacles. On her own, though? She wouldn't get anywhere.

I don't do numbers. Massive, is all I'll estimate. I'd say Gears 1 level, but I don't have that much confidence in PS3 owners. Hardware sales impact? Minimal. If Sony for some inexplicable reason screws up marketing, then who the hell knows. But I don't think that will happen, regardless of how bad they have screwed up previously.

Heres what I think November's will look like:

Gears of War 2 - 2.5 Million
Lich King - 2 Million
Call of Duty 5(360) - 1 Million(maybe closer to 2 Million)
Fable II - 500k
Fallout 3(360) - 400k
Wii Fit - 350k
Mario Kart Wii - 250k
Call of Duty 5(PS3) - 250k
Banjo 3 - 200k
Little Big Planet - 150k

Really though, I have no clue what it'll look like. I'm going to say that Banjo beats LBP though.

haha what? Lich King has like 11 million subscribers. I know you like Gears of War 2 but lets be real.

Sure. Marketing campaign limited to print media due to the actual running game being barely functional vs marketing of one of the most striking looking and sounding games of this generation, to an audience that has already been conditioned to accept shooters and with less competition of any sort, really. It'll be big.

Surprised so many games did relatively poor (<200k).  Publishers see this and yet they'll still be stupid and release everything in Oct/Nov again next year.  smh

Next matter at hand:  After Mirror's Edge bombs is EA going to stop being awesome and making creative original games?  Dead Space should've been pretty mainstream and done 500k+, Mirror's Edge will do considerably worse than DS most likely.  :(

I hope SR2 sells enough to make it profitable to keep the series going.  GTA needs the competition to improve itself.

Also what happened to Fallout 3?  I know it was only on the charts for a few days, but wtf was that PR that it shipped 4 million copies if those were the first day numbers?  Are they just stuffing the channels in hope that it'll sell that many?

I don't think size of userbase matters as much as userbase demographic (see: wii).

I'd say KZ2 would do better than KZ1 but PS3 owners don't seem very interested in games tbh.

Surprised so many games did relatively poor (<200k).  Publishers see this and yet they'll still be stupid and release everything in Oct/Nov again next year.  smh

Demo, Demo, Demo

Dead Space coulda been this year's Bioshock if it had a demo.
