The "concerts you've seen recently" thread
« on: November 30, 2008, 01:47:33 AM »
Just like the movie thread, post what shows you've recently seen.    Yanni at the Acropolis?  some dude banging on a cymbal and screaming in some guy's basement?  Post it all...bands, venues, whatever.

Tonight I saw AIDS Wolf at the Hideout in Chicago.

It was like this:

I wish I could say "yeah, it was noisy like that, but there were some really brilliant dynamics going on that showed sparks of genius" but no, it was pretty much that for an hour. :lol  fun show though!

I've been going to a ton of gigs lately. Mostly local Adelaide bands that wouldn't mean much to anyone here, but I was offered a free ticket to Billy Joel on Tuesday, cause I write for local street press.

I would have gone for a laugh, but I was still hungover from the night before. Probably a good thing though - I think it was something that would have been funny until I had to sit through two hours of crap just to hear Piano Man.

The last show I saw was Okkervil River in October, down at the National in Richmond, VA.  Pretty good show, the band as always put in a great effort but the audience and vibe were kinda meh.  It's cool that Richmond has some decent venues now.  I'd recommend an OR show to anyone.

Other shows this year: Radiohead (best show ever with the worst weather ever), Grizzly Bear at a historic synagogue (amaaazing), David Byrne, and Built to Spill.  Not a bad year for me.

Yeah, Okkervil River are fucking amazing live. There's not many bands I would go out of my way to see - like, interstate sort of deal - but they're definitely one.

The last actual concert I went to was Dream Theater earlier in the year which was awesome.  I wanted to see Joe Satriani and Def Leppard this year but just didn't have the time (I have to travel a bit to get to these concerts).

Def Leppard apparently put on a fantastic show and are still great showmen, as opposed to Motley Crue who were also here recently and just hired strippers and midgets to run around the stage so they wouldn't have to do anything themselves.

Met Ollie and his brother after the gig, the name does come from the Neo Geo game, both massive gamers, worked on Transformers as well at Melbourne House. I :bow2 'ed a lot.

Yeah, I remember hearing that. Actually, there's always been strong ties between the Australian music and games industries: the drummer from You Am I used to review Mega Drive games, for example.

They haven't played in Adelaide for a good year or so, unfortunately. In fact, they haven't played as a full band for a year next week, but they're definitely still together. I'll go to their next gig though, for sure.

That's strange... I saw them in Providence, RI, they definitely didn't deviate from the album at all, but they had the strings and everything from what I recall. Pretty good concert overall, IMO.

I'll admit that's part of my enjoyment of the truly practically unlistenable noise--just that people are doing it (and jeez, even getting a following for it) is interesting to me.  I'm like a food lover who seeks out really weird shit to eat.  But I only see it live--I would not just pop in an AIDS Wolf disc at home.  Part of the fun is the spectacle and experience of being there.

I dunno about trendiness, I've been seeing this shit for years and noise to grindcore or vice versa seems more like a lateral move. :lol  One seems to encompass the art scene more, while the other is more associated with metal...both have very trendy aspects.

When was this show?  I've read pretty frequently that they only bust out the strings for special occasions (television appearances, holiday shows, etc) and play the material completely straight regardless of the presence of strings or not.  They're on a new tour now though, I think, and undoubtedly have much deeper pockets (relatively), so maybe they've changed it up a bit.

Well, it was actually shockingly good -- one of the best sounding shows I've seen at the 9:30 Club.  Kudos to the sound man.  All the old material was fantastic, keyboards standing-in for the string sections went quite well, and they played a decent amount of new stuff, some of which was up to par with the old, but most falls a bit short.  I think we're in for yet another (surprise) sophomore slump.

health was incredible.  it sounded nothing like the album, but in their recent Giant Robot interview (issue 45, also has King Khan interview) they said because people don't play the album loud enough.  then they went on to bitch about people's primary usage of laptops as their stereos and lamented ear buds and ipods.  it all makes sense, really.

i was absolutely blown away with their show, but i hear that the show is very similar each time, so if you see it once, you've seen all you have to see and that all the things which look improvised are actually carefully constructed set pieces.

HOWEVER, it's still a great show.

my next concert is actually going to be Dan Deacon recreating his albums all live with people pulled in from damn near every baltimore band.

Dec 11 brooklyn show with 15 person ensemble
Body:   Dearest Internet,

On December 11th I'll be doing my first show of my new set with an
ensemble of live performers. I'm both very excited and really nervous.

While most of songs are ones I have been playing live for a while, it
will nonetheless be our "first show.
" The set will mainly be material
off my new album, Bromst, which is coming out March 24th on Carpark
Records.
The ensemble is made up of these musicians:

Percussion:
Eric Beach (So Percussion)
Denny Bowen (Double Dagger, Smarthgrowth)
Jeremy Hyman (Ponytail, Ultimate Reality)
Kevin O'Meara )Videohippos, Ultimate Reality)
Rich O'Meara (ko'mm)
Josh Quillen (So Percussion)
Adam Sliwinski (So Percussion)
Jason Treuting (So Percussion)

Synthesizers, Keyboards and Electronics:
Benny Boeldt (Adventure)
William Cashion (Future Islands)
Dan Deacon (me)
Chester Gwazda (Nuclear Power Pants)
Gerrit Welmers (Future Islands)

Guitar:
Matt Papiach (Ecstatic Sunshine/White Williams)
Ken Seeno (Ponytail)

Its taken a long time to split up all the parts and arrange what was
written for electronics and transcribe it into playable parts for
skilled humans. I'm super pumped for this as I loved skilled humans.

In addition to the ensemble I'll still be doing be doing some songs
solo where its more appropriate. I also designed and built a tent.
Here is the information about the performance:

Thursday December 11th, doors at 7:30pm
also performing are Dirty Projectors, So Percussion

Its getting really cold where I

The Masonic Memorial is right next to the King Street metro...  I would go  8)
I'm also curious to hear when the PA was changed in the 9:30 club.  The sound seemed pretty good the last time I was there, but it was my first time on the balcony so I couldn't really compare.

Dec 11 brooklyn show with 15 person ensemble
Body:   Dearest Internet,

On December 11th I'll be doing my first show of my new set with an
ensemble of live performers. I'm both very excited and really nervous.

While most of songs are ones I have been playing live for a while, it
will nonetheless be our "first show.
" The set will mainly be material
off my new album, Bromst, which is coming out March 24th on Carpark
Records.
The ensemble is made up of these musicians:

Percussion:
Eric Beach (So Percussion)
Denny Bowen (Double Dagger, Smarthgrowth)
Jeremy Hyman (Ponytail, Ultimate Reality)
Kevin O'Meara )Videohippos, Ultimate Reality)
Rich O'Meara (ko'mm)
Josh Quillen (So Percussion)
Adam Sliwinski (So Percussion)
Jason Treuting (So Percussion)

Synthesizers, Keyboards and Electronics:
Benny Boeldt (Adventure)
William Cashion (Future Islands)
Dan Deacon (me)
Chester Gwazda (Nuclear Power Pants)
Gerrit Welmers (Future Islands)

Guitar:
Matt Papiach (Ecstatic Sunshine/White Williams)
Ken Seeno (Ponytail)

Its taken a long time to split up all the parts and arrange what was
written for electronics and transcribe it into playable parts for
skilled humans. I'm super pumped for this as I loved skilled humans.

In addition to the ensemble I'll still be doing be doing some songs
solo where its more appropriate. I also designed and built a tent.
Here is the information about the performance:

Thursday December 11th, doors at 7:30pm
also performing are Dirty Projectors, So Percussion
All Ages atBROOKLYN MASONIC TEMPLE
Fort Greene Brooklyn 317 Clermont Ave at Lafayette Ave.

OK, I hope all of you are doing well and learning/learned how to do
all the things you wanted to learn.
Its getting really cold where I
live. Its nice.
See you in the future,

your pal,
dan

if anyone knows of any particularly good shows happening in NYC between 12/29 and 1/3, lemme know.  Nothing for NYE though...probably gonna spend it at some random loft party again.

Saw Nick Cave at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago in Sept. It was pretty cool, but I was so dehydrated and wasn't eating very much that I ended up passing out and had to be carried out of the place into the backroom by the medics. It was pretty fucked up.

that sucks.  I had that happen once at one of the first concerts I went to.  I was 14 and went with a friend to this all day show called the Q101 Jamboree.  It was in the summer.  Instead of drinking water, I ate snow cones all day.  Some time in the afternoon I threw up this neon blue-green stuff and passed out at the hosptial tent for a few hours.  Then my mom had to pick us up early, so we had to miss the headlining acts-- Hole and Sonic Youth.  :maf

My top 4 groups I haven't seen yet, but want to catch in the next year (no particular order):
--Dan Deacon
--Radiohead
--Shellac
--Lightning Bolt

Want to see again:
--Melt Banana - omg so good and intense
--Medeski Martin and Wood (an acoustic show...they are at their best when they aren't catering to the jam band crowd with pseudo-funk)
--Jackie O Motherfucker - i don't do drugs often, but there's nothing quite like getting stoned and seeing JOMF.  :lol

Don't worry about it.  Nick Cave is used to bitches fainting at his presence.
