Gahhh RPGs are so punishing. I just lost hours of progress. That really snaps my will to keep playing. I mean, I guess I didn't lose like....a TON considering I wasn't too far, but just the thought of sitting through those battles and that exposition and stuff again....

Atlus needs to be smacked for this worse-than-kh2 level intro.

hours?

How does that even happen in P4?

oh shi-- you didn't save at all through the intro?  ouch.  well, if you have to do it again, I think triangle fast forwards.

this game has a particularly brutal opening.  I think it's about 3 hours when all is said and done and the gameplay begins. even for SMT, that's asking a lot.

Just keep doing floor after floor after floor and then do a bunch of school stuff and then hit the boss thinking "oh im so overleveled i'll be fine."

If you turn on autoadvancing text, excepting three parts in the entire intro, it would play itself.

Shouldn't you have the opportunity to save between school and dungeon?  I save ALL THE TIME in rpgs and I don't remember losing more than 30 mins max.

Losing 30+ minutes of progress is the worst.  I remember in IU there is one section near the end where I was on the verge of death after an hour of nonstop no save fighting.  If I actually did die I would have quit right then and there.

only a few more days of finals then I can start Persona 4

Thanks for the tip. I'll back up the virtual memory cards I have just to be sure too.

Doubt that Sony's working on the bug, or anything related to backwards-compatibility, so I guess I'll have to live with it.

You guys have convinced me to pick this game up.  I just finished Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon and was looking for a quality lengthy JRPG to settle in with over the holidays (hurray for being unemployed with no job interviews until mid Jan).
I've never played a MegaTen game before and all my excuses for not picking up P3 seem to have been addressed in P4.  Looking forward to digging into this.

well you might be confused by the skill names, which are very megaten

garu = wind
bufu = ice
agi = fire
zio = volt
megido = non elemental

then theres different levels of each, like agilao then agidyne and so on
press the square button to get more info on a skill

Yeah, that did throw me for a loop for a while.  Until I did something I haven't done with a game in ages... I actually opened the instruction booklet.  It includes a chart of skills and items as well as Fusion Table.

What general approach should I take in fusing?  Should I be pretty conservative or just go all out and experiment with Fusion?

Well, I'm already a few hours into this game (and I FINALLY get to go explore the school and town!) so I'm going to stick this out.  However, if I like this I'll definitely explore the other megaten games and check out DDS.

I don't mind the japaneseyness so much... it's more the fact that all the characters are in high school that's taking some getting used to.  But I think I'll stick with it, it doesn't seem too emo yet... and hey, if I could put up with Crisis Core's over the top emu crap, I think I'll be ok with P4.

What general approach should I take in fusing?  Should I be pretty conservative or just go all out and experiment with Fusion?

It's best to fuse every few floors, I think. When you get a new Persona in the shuffle time, stock up on new Personas, take them down to Igor and try em out.

When it comes to fusion, I think it's most advisable to have a few specific types at one time. That way you can overcome any situation and not be thrown for a loop. ie: have a agi persona, garu persona, bufu persona, and zio persona. Even better is a persona that has all 4 elemental types - which you can mostly only make through fusion experimentation. Physical (attack) based persona are also great, because some have null or repel when it comes to physical attacks. That means every time someone hits you with that persona equipped you block or send back their attack. Very useful, especially on the boss of the second dungeon. Later in the game it's advisable to make, on top of the four basic elemental Personas, light and dark based personas so you can cover your ass and not get a game over whenever a shadow hits you with an instant death spell. But it's still quite early for that so...

Also, one other tip is to make use of buffs and debuffs.

There are two types of buffs in the Shin Megami Tensei games: unda and kaja spells.

Kaja - buff which strengthens a character or the whole party
Unda - debuff, which lowers enemy power

Notable starter buffs/debuffs:

Rakukaja - Improve defense
Rakunda - Lower defense
Sukukaja - Improve hit and evasion
Sukunda - Lowers hit and evasion
Tarukaja - Improves attack power
Tarunda - Lowers attack power
Dekunda - Nullfies all stat changes (buffs/debuffs) on party
Dakaja - Nullfies all stat changes on enemy

This is more of a P3 approach than a P4 approach. In P3, you needed to be The Man who could strike any conceivable weakness an enemy might have, because you couldn't really trust your teammates to do it when you needed them to. But in P4, if you have manual control on, you only really need to fuse stuff that'll fill holes in your team's overall capabilities. Like if you have Yosuke around, you don't need to be strict about having Dekaja or wind skills "just in case."

That's true. I'm just a very cautious man.

I'll admit that in P4 so far, the MC knowing the buffs and debuffs or whatever status related crap is far more important him having an assortment of different types of Persona. It's mostly because since you now can't refill your mp at any time, you have to be cautious with your mp usage. So spreading your mp among different characters is better than one person mostly kicking ass like in P3.

Debaser, this may be a stupid question but how is xp spread to your mia party members? Like I now have Ryo Hazuki, Chie, Yukiko, and Kanji as my party but I don't want Yosuke to be behind. Does he level up with the rest of the party or am I gonna have to grind him later on?

You're gonna have to grind him, characters in battle don't gain xp.

OK... now that I'm about 16 hours into my first SMT game...
I'm officially addicted.  At first the day structure annoyed me because i wanted to do more during the day.  But now I realize the bite size days are exactly what makes the pacing of the game so awesome... this is ultimately what will keep me interested for the 100+ hours this game supposedly lasts.
The gameplay elements aren't anything spectacular in and of themselves... the combat system seems pretty basic so far... no complaints though.  I'm really digging the story so far.

thanks for the answers they are 100% correct, good job

now im currently at the fourth dungeon boss who is kinda tough, I got a game over at least.
Mostly because he uses gigadyne which devastates most of my party. i notice he doesnt use it if you dont let him rebuild his defense though, which only happened because i was busy healing instead of attacking during that process

tips welcome for that, i believe Im around level 38 or so.

I'm now lvl 19 and am 13 hours in. Compendium is only at 7%.
I remember sucking at persona "breeding" in P3 also. I just never take the time to fuse personae at the beginning...

Playing it on normal by the way. No way I'm touching the hardest mode.

When can I finally carry more persona? At lvl 20?

Oh and some of the arcana changes are nasty. I got a less EXP curse. Shit, the battles only give you 1 EXP. Lasted only 6 battles though...

My Black Frost was invaluable. He drains two elements and is weak to none, so you've got a 50% chance of his Ma- elemental attack healing you and a 0% chance of hitting your MC's weak spot. He'll also have Agidyne, and the Fool link should be enough to get him the Fire Amp that'll really hit hard. So long as he doesn't have the Red Wall on (and if he does, Yukiko's Fire Break can take care of that) a Mind Charge'd and Fire Amp'd Agidyne can take out his defensive shell when he tries to rebuild it in about one shot.
