I basically just ground his ass down. It took me so long that I even used my only soma mid-battle to refuel because I was running out of sp, lulz. I think I was around 45 or so when I eventually beat him.

I'd get him down quick, but since I stupidly sold my bravery vessel accessories, I kept having him dump evil smile on the main character followed by ghastly wail for an instakill. 5 times I had him on the ropes and he pulled that shit, so on the last attempt I swapped the null fear persona in even though it killed my damage output. At least I won!

I got stuck trying to do this. I'm at the same level but Kanji and his two fellow distinguished effete fellows keep on killing me. What did you do for the boss battle?

I just played that battle today on my second playthrough. Yeah, I'm bored and don't have much to do.

What I did:

MC: attacked Nice Guy until dead, lowering defense as needed
Yosuke: used debuff (dekaja?) on Shadow Kanji every turn so that Nice Guy's heat riser would go off
Chie: attacked Nice Guy until dead
Yukiko: healed every turn, basically

After Nice Guy goes down, have the MC cast the defense lowering spell on Kanji then hit him with a powerful physical attack or use a -ula spell. I used Bufula with Jack Frost- he gets Ice boost, too. Yosuke can attack Shadow Kanji, so can Chie, and Yukiko can keep healing. I ignored Tough Guy.

What's this senpai shit? Kanji just told me he didn't know we were his senpais or something of the like. Earlier in the game, Kosuke referred to some whore he liked as senpai. Does this mean I'm going to get to tear up Kanji's ass like he (and I) want?

EDIT: Also, at first, I thought the whole Kanji section was well done, but now, after his dungeon's been done and his situation resolved, I kinda feel like Atlus pussed out and backed off by making him not really gay. I'm kinda puzzled why they didn't just go through with it.

Yeah, I was disappointed in that too.

That's still copping out, relegating it to one text box that it takes a certain amount of effort to get to.

The games motif up until this point has been that the people realize and accept that the Shadows are part of themselves, but for Kanji it gets morphed into, basically "I HAVE COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS WITH DUDES AND CHICKS." It takes what initially appears to be an interesting little narrative in the story, and then instead of taking it to where it was logically going, uses it as an excuse to tell gay jokes for (what I'm assuming will be) the rest of the game.

It's not affecting my enjoyment of the game or whatever, it's just a smidge of disappointment.

oh, i ain't disagreeing, although i read it more as just kanji being confused with his weird ideas of "manliness" until you help him realize that he is mad homo and that it's cool. at first, though, i was irked, because i thought we'd finally get a gay dude played for something other than the occasional homo joke. i think it turned out fairly nuanced, though, for a jappy videogame.

I maxed Kanji's s link and thought his final words during that cut scene made it clear that he is really gay. "That 'other me' is me." But I'm still running into story scenes that make it seem like he's either confused or bi (same thing, if you ask most gay men). Don't know if there will be any more clarification as the story goes along.

Either way, I agree with you. This is probably about as nuanced as we've yet seen from the culture that brought us Cho Aniki, Hard Gay, and Tingle.

i think they nailed the "small town is full of clueless, unsophisticated tards that hang out at wal-mart" angle really well, though. after all, you don't get to be flamboyantly gay in a small town; you just seem confused and angry and forlorn and then bugger the hitler youth bishie mascot on a class trip!

kanji's confused sexuality makes sense IF you consider that his only gay role models in bummufukku-cho were PROBABLY cho aniki and hard gay!

You guys seem to be enjoying this game a lot. It is better than Persona 3 or more of the same? Persona 3 wasn't that well received on this board, but this game is getting the opposite reception here. I only played a bit of P3:FES. Also, is the game connected to P3 or is a stand alone game a la the Final Fantasy games?

my take? the battles are better in p4, since you can control teammates, which i prefer, but i don't like how p4 is quite a bit more inflexible when it comes to time management -- you can't really dick around with the schedule and squander a whole month grinding. likewise, it's not obvious how to grow certain social stats without a guide. p4 has a better approach to dungeons, but character/persona stats and gear seem to mean a lot less. i'm about the same on the casts: p3 had junpei and a kickass dog; p4 has teddie and kanji. p3's worst characters were the bland boxer kid and fuuka, but even together they're not nearly as obnoxious as fucking rise (the "retired" idol). i like p4's small town setting and "mystery," but i'd like more of p3's weird urban horror ambience. both have some great non-party social links: p3 had the nazi student council kid; p4 has a sexy nasty nurse that will let "the protagonist" bone her. p4's interface design is slicker, though. call it a sorta tie, for now.

I like it more than P3. For as much as I liked how different P3 was, not having direct control over my party just irked me too much. It's not even that their AI was bad or anything, I just could not accept not having complete control

I enjoyed it more than P3.

Pros

-Control your whole team, which you'll pretty much HAVE to do soon after/during the first dungeon.
-Better dungeons.
-Liked the murder mystery/rural setting/Scooby Doo vibe better than the crazy conspiracy/city/Harry Potter vibe of P3.
-Seemed to be a bit harder, probably because your SP don't replenish when you go back to the lobby. Also less money.
-Team members more likable overall. Teddie/Kanji > any of P3's main cast. Also you could have s. links with all your team members, and advancing them gave you tangible benefits in combat.

Cons
-Harder to raise your attributes, and there's FIVE now instead of three
-Because of that, you can take longer to access some s. links. I pretty much wasn't able to do anything with Naoto until the last week or so of available time.
-If you screw up on time management, you can bork your s. links. On my first playthrough I was kind of lazy and would advance my non-team s. links as opposed to beating the shit out of the dungeon immediately and then maxing out my team s. links.
-Rise sucks pretty much as bad as Fuuka, so I guess that's a wash.

I think during my playthroughs of FES I probably died maaaaaybe once. In P4 I probably died half a dozen times- I don't think I was any more careless in my playstyle; the game just felt a bit harder, which I always appreciate. Right now (haven't played Fallout 3 yet) this is about tied with Etrian Odyssey 2 for my GOTY. All that probably changes tomorrow, but whatever! Awesome game, good send off to the PS2 is my verdict. Buy it and play the shit out of it.

yeah, the story kind of turned into predictable stuff around dungeon 4/5. I didn't even consider who it was for a while but then it really just hit me as being so right in front of your face. I'm more playing now for the social interaction stuff between the characters (like the cultural festival and campout stuff) than the actual story and dungeon crawling.

p4. p3 has a few things I liked better but it's definitely the weaker game.

I just started playing this, its my first Persona game. I'm taken aback by how sleek and the game is (mainly the UI). Lots of style. The music is fantastic (from what I've heard so far).

They got me once, too. If they surprise attack you, they will rape your weaknesses bad. I think when they got me, I didn't even get a turn. And after that, I ran whenever I saw the fuckers, at least until I finished the boss of the dungeon.
