I jsut fucked up.  Went in without a goho-m.  Praying for the arcana card that sends me to the entrance, or a goho-m in a chest.

if you are deep enough in, keep going until you get to the save before a boss, usually you can warp out free there

Really?  I'm only on the third dungeon, but I do not recall that happening before.

Do you know if any of the characters have a persona that learns the goho-m equivalent skill?

The butterfly right before any boss battle will allow you to save as well as return to the entrance of the dungeon.  Don't think there's a goho-m skill.

*edit:  I stand corrected.  The skill is traesto.

Prole said traesto is the skill.

Shite.  I'm only on the 3rd of 11 floors.  I think I am slightly overleveled, but still.  I have a ton of cash so I guess I can abuse the fox if necessary, but still, here's hoping I don't have to do any rejiggering of my current party before the mid-boss

I'm on the sixth floor of the last last dungeon and am getting my ass whooped by a miniboss who basically only uses instant kill skills.  It's pissing me off.  One time I fought him, and he had the first attack... he apparently got two attacks which were 1) Evil Smile which inflicted all my party members with Fear... followed by 2) Ghastly Wail which instantly kills anyone who is inflicted with fear... which was my whole party.  So he killed my whole party before I got to make a single move.  Fucking cheap!

*edit:  beat it.

2 hours of gameplay. I'm so pissed. I don't even know if I feel like playing right now... could take a while.

Yeah Kanji's dungeon pissed me off so much that I just moved on to Fallout 3. Still stuck on fucking Kanji and I think I'm underleveled.

Just finished Persona 4 with my final save file clocking in at 82 hours and 12 minutes.  Since this was my first Shin Megami Tensei game, I thought I'd jot down my thoughts while it's still on my mind.

Though they are totally different games, Persona 4 correctly does with mythology and structure what Odin Sphere failed to do.  I loved the concept behind Odin Sphere in that it's gameplay and story telling devices seemed to mirror the forms as well as the subject matter of epics such as Orlando Furioso and Nibelungenlied.  After I got passed Odin Sphere's still unsurpassed beauty and it's innovative structure, I realized that it just was not fun to play.  The bite sized battles followed by long stretches of inventory management ultimately could not hold my attention long enough to finish the game.  Persona 4 takes this repeating bite sized gameplay and makes it work.  Rather than finding inspiration in the strophic forms of epic poetry however, Persona 4 creates an addictive cycle out of something much more mundane... the daily routines of a suburban Japanese high school student.  At first this structure seemed prohibitive.  You can only accomplish a handful of tasks in one in-game day before the calendar forces you to advance.  While most JRPGs allow you to put saving the world on hold indefinitely while you grind up your stats and do side quests, Persona 4 gives you a genuine sense of urgency as the game propels the player forward to solve the mystery and rescue friends.  I quickly began to appreciate the constraints of this pace and gladly utilized a skill rarely required in a JRPG... time management.  I found myself looking at my clock aghast to see that it was 2, 3, sometimes 4 am and still thinking, "I'll just do one more in-game day."

But what was really compelling me to play day after in-game day was main mystery of the plot.  It's hard to discuss a murder mystery without giving away whodunnit.  But I love how Persona 4 weds Japanese mythology with modern life in a coherent way.  Persona 4 is not the first to combine Animism with modern characters... Miyazaki's Spirited Away accomplished this wonderfully.  But Miyazaki's tale had the modern invading the ancient.  Chihiro left her modern world temporarily and entered a pocket of reality governed by spirits.  In Persona 4, the ancient animist gods are updated for a technological world.  An ancient Japanese creation myth with parallels to the story of Orpheus and Eurydice forms the ultimate basis for a story based on modern understandings of science and human psychology.

Persona 4 is the first Shin Megami Tensei game I've ever even touched.  I'm sure everything I've written here comes as no surprise to veterans of the series.  I'm really glad I picked finally got to see what all the fuss was about.  This was definitely a high point in my game experiences.

So you have to use your time wisely in this game? Like, going to the Library and studying will take up a whole day. I'm going to have an aneurysm worrying about if I'm doing stuff right... I'm bad at deciding on things.

Yeah, that's one of my only gripes with the game. I hate that you have to immediately go home and sleep because you're "too tired after studying with Nanako" or whatever. It's frustrating, but I've found that I can get more done if I just do all my grinding in one in-game "day" so I don't waste too much time inside of the TV.

It's not that huge of a deal, really.  You always have plenty of time to do the dungeons.  On rainy days, nearly all activities are not available, aside from dungeon crawling.

I'm glad they force you along.  I mean, the game took me more than 80 hours as it was.  If it had allowed me to dilly dally as most JRPGs allow, I doubt I'd ever have gotten all the way through the game.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing now (thanks for the tip). I'm at Suikiko(?) dungeon now and I'm basically running around and conserving my SP enough so that I can grind as much as possible. I've actually made leveled up quite a bit and I figure I can use the Butterfly to warp out when I run out of SP.

That's cool then. I was worried about juggling my job, signing up for Sports practice and worrying about the next person I need to save but it seems like the devs worked it out so they don't really conflict with eachother but it takes initiative on the gamer to keep up with everything. Its pretty cool.

im close to maxing yukiko and chie, then once I get naoto my harem will be complete

seriously though i havent played in about a week and i have three social links not established, which I need to do to get the true ending so Ive read

tower (tutor kid), moon (ai ebihara, sports team manager), and fortune (naoto)

moon should be as easy as talking to her but it looks like the other require maxed stats, I have knowledge maxed so i need courage to talk to naoto, and i still need a bit of understanding (one more level) to accept the tutor job

anyway I just started the month of September, anyone think I wont be able to pull it off? the previous month had a bunch of wasted time for other slinks I could load an earlier save easily

Get the Hermit Social Link started with the Fox as soon as possible and max it out as soon as you can.  Use a faq if you need to figure out all the quests he wants you to do.  It will let you pay to refill your SP while inside the TV.  At the lower levels of the S Link, the price to refill SP is insanely high, but comes down a lot as you level the S Link.  Take the time to max the Hermit S Link up early because it will allow you to spend tons of time in the dungeons leveling up enough to clear a dungeon in one in-game day.  This will clear up precious days later in the game for leveling up other S Links.

you do NOT need to max out ANY social links to get the true ending.  Nor to you have to establish any particular social links to get the true ending.

Focus on maxing out the Fox and your combat team mates first as those give you the most tangible benefits in the dungeons.

BrandNew, this is my favorite game of the year, but know what you are getting into.  It's a dungeon crawler, but a lot of the time you won't be in dungeons.  You will be socializing and shit.  So if the concept of a vaguely dating simulator-ish dungeon crawl turns you off, stay away.  Also note that it's teh jappy to 11.  On the other hand, the game is pretty damned funny, has a great localization, and is filled with great characters.  And not great in the Himumu "OMG SQUALL IS JUST LIKE ME" sense, but in a really entertaining and often actually funny sense.

P3 is little different from P4, it only has two save points and you can't take full control over your A.I which you probably already know after spending 4 hours on it. Granted, I'm only 10 hours in P4 so there can be more differences I don't know about. AND IT'S BLUE.

I dont know if it has been mentioned since I havnt been following the thread(spoilers and junk) but if you go back into dungeons you've already completed, you can fight an optional boss. I got a weapon for Yukiko for beating the first one, which was stronger than anything that was currently at the store.

some interesting stuff has happened in my game today:
three teammates in a row pushed the mc out of the way from a fatal attack, that was cool. I died anyway, but its the thought that counts.

second I had no idea people not in your party other then the fox could show up in dungeon, but I had an interesting conversation with teddie and kanji who were just standing around in a room near the entrance. They give you items when you talk, nothing major or rare thoigh

also upright moon arcana is the best, gives you double xp or something, very helpful.

I haven't played DDS since I got my new Sharp 720 16:9. On my old Sony 480 4:3 I don't recall it ever looking all blury. Kinda hurts my eyes. Is this common with PS2 games on newer tvs? I was using full screen, so that may have had an effect.

Any suggestions?

The TV is probably trying to upconvert the resolution of the game to the native one of the HDTV (and doing horribly). Do you have a PS3? That may fare better at upconverting the game.

I completed this like a week and a half ago, 62 hours for the true ending. Liked it a lot, I also loved all the small gameplay enhancements that were made, but I think that overall the cast of social links was better in P3. And I was disappointed to see that in the end the plot all devolved into complete nonsense

What disappointed me the most is that there are no missions located outside of the randomly generated dungeons, while there were some in P3 and I think they added some much-needed diversity.

yep SP accrual items are way too rare in the game, I appreciate the fact that they're a lot scarcer, but you basically spend the whole game trying to come up with new creative ways to spare your SP and it gets very irritating at times... you  can get them all back by paying fuck moneys to the dog but it's useless when it comes to bosses
