yeah watched some of what aired here, but how was I defending it? I thought it was unbearable to watch because of how gay the theme was.

i have watched roughly 90% of it and i do not remember it being "too friendly" or full of group hugs

i disagree with the suggestion that seinfeld fundamentally changed sitcoms, though

it had very witty writing and spot-on timing, and i can watch it over and over again, but i don't think that it was groundbreaking in the way sitcoms like all in the family, mash, or mary tyler moore were

yeah, i don't think seinfeld fundamentally changed sitcoms, since britcoms had been doing comedies with hateful protagonists for decades previous to it, but it managed to put a neurotic slant on the proceedings that provided for some really hilarious and memorable bits.

Friends had its moments and none of it was because of the humor (was there any?).  There are some scenes where Courteney Cox was just nipping.  Maybe it was 30 degrees in the room or something but that rocked my 11-12 year old world.  The younger Jennifer Aniston was 

The show mostly sucked because half of it was useless Ross and Rachel shit.  Interspersed with Joey's promiscuity turned sentimentality in later seasons and Chandler's neurotic persona which had already been beaten into the ground by the 100,000 Ben Stiller flicks that were released in that show's timeframe.
