More games need to use something like VATS
« on: December 14, 2008, 09:40:41 PM »
:bow VATS :bow2

Maybe I'm getting older and don't want to have to aim at everything, or Fallout 3's aiming controls are shit, or the enemies move too fast, but I think VATS is one of the best things to come about in ages. Makes a welcome change from running around stupidly spamming X or whatever the button was in Oblivion.

Even something trivial as shooting a radroach becomes awesome as you get the cinematic shot for a critical hit or death blow.

More games with VATS please. I'd like to see a melee/close quarters game with a VATS style system. Breakdown & VATS = :hyper

yeah, VATS is good stuff.  I wonder if they can make it work in the Elder Scrolls setting.

I really hate the look of VATS.  It'll be interesting to see if my opinion changes once I play the game these Christmas hols.

I thought it sounded stupid too before I used it but it's really amazing. Less reflex based and more skill based

Haven't played Vagrant Story so I can't compare it to that.

Actually now I think of it IU would have been 1000% more fun with VATS

A sort of ATB, VATS model would be cool. The Japanese need to stop Dragon Questin' shit. EVOLVE MOTHA'FUCKA's. tri-Ace is sort of doing this (Valkyrie Profile 2 :bow).

I just love how this game allows you to stand back, pick people off in realtime and then get in their face and fuck shit up via VATS.

vats is kinda cool.  I wish it would take scopes into account though.

Does it work like Vagrant Story?

not really.  You aim for the body part like Vagrant Story, but you use up a regenerating AP bar while it auto-aims your shots for you. So no cool timed-button press combos like VS.

I thought scopes were taken into account? seems like I can hit people from further away with the scoped magnum or sniper than I could with a regular weapon?

Sweet.  I was looking forward to the game, but now I'm even more excited.

Yeah, you can definitely slow the game down if you want. You start using the realtime FP stuff when your already overpowering certain enemies and don't want to see the VATS death animation for the 1000th time.

VATS is one of the most innovative and revolutionary features in a game this gen.  It made the combat incredibly satisfying, even vs. things like radroaches, as you said.

I love vats because it makes Fallout 3 not an fps and more of an rpg. It's genius.

I think jrpgs have their share of problems but this is one complaint I don't understand. Jrpgs have evolved far more than wrpgs in the past few years. I mean, shit, look at FFXII, FFX-2, VP2, BOF: DQ, SMT3:N, Persona 3, and a few others and that's just off the top of my head. All of these games did their own things and evolved the genre in their own way. When you say this do you mean you don't want command based rpgs or what because a good majority of today's jrpgs don't even bother copying Dragon Quest.

I mean, even this year we've got games like The World Ends With You which do their own thing.

Japanese rpgs have their problems, mostly story wise, but the gameplay has seen a pretty good amount of evolution this decade.

VATS is incredible. Earlier today I was pondering whether or not Mass Effect might have been a better game with VATS. I think most first-person RPG's could benefit from a similar design.

I also really liked how they handled repairs in Fallout 3.

VATS works nicely (though the slowdown gets a tad annoying) but the actual FPS controls feel weird, this game was definitely made to play with VATS and not as an FPS.

I'm sure it was Bore.

Hell no. Who would complain about that? THat's the one feature that turns it from a fps to an rpg. Whoever complains about that even pre-release was an idiot.

I'm 30 hours in and haven't used VATS more than maybe 10 times.

I only use melee weapons, though..

I used the EXP glitch for the X360 version.  :-*

Made the game more fun IMO.

Nope.

But it sounds interesting.  :lol

I'm going to look for it.

I love being overpowered in RPG's.

The level cap is the reason why I stopped playing for a while.

But I'm going to look for the Deathclaw to be more powerful.

Do you actually mean Deathclaw as in those vicious beasts, or a mighty weapon?

Fighting Deathclaw creatures in melee is some fierce shit.

Its an actual weapon, but you do have to fight atleast on of them to get a Death Claw hand from it (The Death Claw is a custom weapon)

umm, most people who saw vids complained about it.  VATS was never shown off correctly before release.  Seeing snippets of action of this game make it look awful, vids never did it justice, and somehow all the previews and reviews managed to not capture it well.  I didn't believe the game would be any good until people on forums were saying it delivered.
