Battle Royale book > Battle Royale movie

More emphasis on story and character development. I like the movie a good deal, but I'm finding the book extremely hard to put down. Anyone else read the book?

I did a book report on it a few years back in high school.  2nd most awkward class presentation I had to give; number 1 was a group project where I was the only male in the group and forced to play a self hating racist black man.

How'd you like it and what'd you say about the book in the report?  :lol

How could the book be better when it doesn't have Beat Takeshi in it?

I go back and forth between if I liked the book or movie more.  On one hand I like Kiriyama being a silent psycho killer, and on the other I liked him having a backstory about how he is an emotionless smart psycho killer.  The manga isn't too bad despite being full of useless violence and sex (and a mixture of both).

and I started my presentation by going in front of my class asking if they could kill each other for survival, then I showed a clip of the movie which my teacher had to stop because I neglected to mention it was rated R...which it wasn't since it was some bootleg version I downloaded at the time.  I had to go on from there by just explaining it.

I haven't seen the movie in years.  The night I saw the movie was my birthday and it was also the first time I was exposed to liquid morphine, which became a favored party favor for way too long afterwards.  I really don't recall too much of the movie, other than one of the whores in it is in Kill Bill and Beat Takeshi is in it.

Beat is such an awesome name. Even if it's not his real name, that's an awesome name.

The first time I did heroin was the night I first saw Requiem for a Dream.  That was actually an eventful night, but I will always remember it because of not being able to get a hard-on.

I don't recall the first time I did shrooms.  I was kind of underwhelmed because I had done a lot of LSD and PCP before, so I had kind of high expectations because people hyped shrooms up.  The first time I did LSD I remember everything outdoors sounding as though it were indoors and I pushed a girl into traffic, but she didn't get hit.

My most memorable time taking LSD involved being snowed/freezing rained in, watching bootleg DBZ (this was when only like when the first arc was on CN), and staring into a prism for hours on end.  I had a splitting headache that went on for days and days.  We were directing the beam of light coming from the prism directly into our eyes for extended periods because it made you see cool shit.

I thought the film was pretty bad (and the second, even worse) - the book definitely had more character development, and beyond that it actually did feel like it had elements of political satire, even if it was a little too blunt or not cleverly done.

Reading an English translation of Japanese is always interesting, too - you can tell when the translator was trying to get certain elements of Japanese-ness inherent in the writing across, but didn't quite get there...

I liked the fact that the book explains the quick cut scene from the movie where you see the one girl walking away as two dead boys are lying on either side of her.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
She seduces them and if I remember correctly castrates them both.  :omg

The sequel movie is utter crap. Maybe the fact that I downloaded a version that was dubbed in German had something to do with it.
But it did have a kind of cool Saving Private Ryan beach assault scene. But maybe that's just rose tinted glasses talking. I barely even remember the plot of the second movie

why do japanese people have a fascination with black background with obnoxious text in the foreground with random gibberish sayings in their film making? It's a total disconnect, but I see it in animu, live action, the works.

Love the book, I've read it countless times over the past few years. I've never actually gotten around to seeing the movie though.

I was always on the side who thought that the teacher diving into the explosion because of rugby was the best part of the ending, but my friend said that surviving the entire battle at the end with a single pistol was the best.  Either way, the movie was hilarious.

I like how in the book a lot of the thoughts are about ways to take down the awful government that plagues the characters. In the movie, this is a total after thought and the only person who brings it up is Shinji.
