The newest and most detailed data on teen birth rates shows significant increases in 26 states and represents most regions of the USA.

The federal data — largely from birth certificates — shows widespread statistically significant increases for 2006, the most recent year for which data are available. In the two previous years — from 2004 to 2005 and from 2003 to 2004 — only one state in each year (Tennessee and South Dakota) had a significant increase.

Depends on the state and county. Some places are pretty conservative, and believe that free birth control condones premarital and underaged sex. Most colleges give away free condoms. I don't think I paid for a condom 'till I was like 22-years-old.

I will say that a lack of proper birth control amongst young people nowadays is pretty startling. I mean, I know people directly that don't use birth control. That blows my mind.

A lot of people don't use birth control, Willco.

I don't really blame a lack of sex ed for this but I do know that a lot of guys think condoms are little getting into a shower with your socks on and think that if they master the pull out method, they will be ok. That and assume that their girlfriends are taking their birth control regularly, which is definitely not the case in a lot of instances.

Emphasis being placed on abstinence only sex ed, I'd imagine. If I was a teenager and I had the opportunity to make fuck, I doubt I'd research safe sex. Why research safe sex when you can be doing something more productive, like beating off?

And without being able to back this statement up, I think that even if they do know the risks, the "it can't happen to me" effect is in play. Teenagers are too young and inexperienced in life to know that yes, bad things can and will happen to you.

In other words, kids should just be sapped in the back of the head and kept locked in the basement when they are between the ages of about 12 and 25.

Physical labor does not require thought. I'm not saying we'd make them engineers, just grunt workers to put together our roads and bridges. Started taking birth control pills? I think they make man boobs grow a little and will let you lose some body hair, but I'm not certain. I've only ever been a female who takes birth control pills.

Haven't rates fallen for like 15 years in a row? Wasn't it just probable that they would begin to rise again?

The birth rate rose by 3 percent between 2005 and 2006 among 15-to-19-year-old girls, after plummeting 34 percent between 1991 and 2005

It is interesting that the last time these rates spiked was during the late 80's (Reagan/Bush), who pushed pro-abstinence programs and now again with another administration that pushes the pro-abstinence programs.
