Rock opera

I'm the type of guy who really enjoys their story-telling (Who isn't a fan of Mariner's Revenge Song?), so this seems to be right up my ally. But at the same time, I wonder if its a bit too pretentious.

Ah, I see. I don't know, I'm curious. I got a lot of mileage out of the Crane Wife, but I thought it was missing some of the epic stories that their previous stuff had. This looks to be somewhat of a return to that.

Ding ding ding. This is even more boring than their last two albums. To its credit, it is more rocky, like the Tain, and less twee-y, but there's nary a catchy tune to be had.

It's worth checking out. Some people will tell you it was bad, but a lot of other people will tell you it was a strong effort that doesn't compare to Picaresque or the earlier albums. It's good, I got a lot of milage out of it. Check it out.

I listened to the full album. It's alright. I will probably like it more once I listen to it more. It definitely is a rock opera, although it isn't as varied as, for example, the Wall. A lot of the same melodies repeat more than once. The other frustrating thing is there's not really one track on the CD that you can play individually and get a lot out of.

They're consistently awesome in clubs. I wouldn't judge an act based on how they play at a stadium or a festival, especially if they are not accustomed to such shitty conditions.

Muse is pretty bad, I've only ever liked that one song in GH3.

I saw the Decemberists in a small bar environment in Columbus and they were fantastic. They played the Mariner's Revenge Song as the encore.

I know what happened. Stephanie Meyer said it was one of her favorite bands and inspirations. There goes that band's EB cred.

There's no way you're remembering that right. I'm sure cajole did praise Muse, but there's no way more than a handful of people agreed with him.

Your mediocre ability to judge music is well documented. Matt Bellamy blows this band away just by himself. However, with your previous comment in mind, I will check out the Decemberists live again if I get a chance to see them in a smaller venue.

I like a lot of great music and a lot of crap, but I don't really feel the need to pump myself up by telling me that everything I listen to is superlative. It's okay to like big, over-produced crap. It's also okay to like shitty punk music that sounds like it was recorded in a septic tank. Not everything you appreciate has to fit some objective definition of greatness. It's okay. Breathe.

I use that one a lot because it really does fit some of the shittier sounding recordings of the 60s-80s. It sounds more like sound was embossed onto a disc of heavy ambient noise rather than being recorded onto a previously pristine source.

I think the septic tank analogy works better with white light/white heat, but it definitely also applies to some of the songs on the first album. Some of the songs on that are actually well recorded. Maybe half of them.
