Quote
THESE shocking images show Oscar winning Slumdog actor Azharuddin Mohammed receiving a vicious beating at the hands of his father.

Only days after walking down the red carpet in Hollywood the ten-year-old film star was slapped and kicked by dad, Ismail, after refusing to be put on display like a trophy.

One onlooker said: "It was like a scene out of Slumdog Millionaire."

The lad's dad has since apologised for striking his son.

“I was very sorry that I did what I did,” said the repentant father.

“I was so confused and stressed by my son’s homecoming that I did not know myself for a minute. I love my boy and I am very happy to have him home.”

The ugly scenes, which lasted no more than 30 seconds, broke out at around midday today Indian time in the Dharavi slum in Bandra, Mumbai.

Azharuddin, who had been given a day off school, was tired after his long haul flight from LA and prolonged hero’s welcome amid a media scrum yesterday.

And when he refused to be put on display outside his home this afternoon, his father lashed out, kicking and slapping him round the face.

I'm curious. You don't seem to like many sentimental, emotional inspiration type flicks. Same with Shake - yet both of you loved this movie. What separates the emotion in this film from other films, say Button.

Button is manipulative schlock. Now, thats not to say that Slumdog isnt manipulative also, but the differences are that you genuinely like and root for these characters, and the movie is brimming with energy and totally draws you in. Button did not of these things. It was a bland, heartless affair. A pretty one, but thats about it. Come to think of it, Slumdog is probably my only 10/10 for 2008.

What ever happened to Shake?

To clarify a bit -ALL movies try to manipulate you in various ways, but the talented filmmakers do it in subtle ways so that you're not really aware of it. Movies like Button are so overt that it just gets on your nerves. When the movie is basically telling you "okay, this is the emotional scene, you should feel this emotion", it fails.

Doesn't drama - art - in of itself do that? If the artist feels like expressing a certain, deliberate emotion through their work does that make it less valid than other art? There's often human emotion in drama. Sure a sad scene can be so exaggerated that it reaches parody levels, but I dunno. It's like people think "omg that movie made me want to cry, manipulative trash!" wtf you're human

Did you see my second post, PD? Its not the act of manipulation that makes a movie bad, but the execution of it. Subtlety goes a long way.

Didn't see the second post.

Give an example of a subtle, emotionally "manipulative" scene, and one that's blatant. Like, memorable scenes from memorable movies ie not Button

You can think of your own examples, PD, its pretty simple. When you can consciously sit there and feel the movie telling you HERE IS THE DRAMATIC SCENE, COMPLETE WITH DRAMATIC MUSIC, INSERT TEARS HERE, then it fails.

I'm not avoiding Slumdog to stick it to the man - that's stupid.  I'm avoiding it, as I do with most of these flicks, because I'd rather watch geniunely entertaining films over something created with the sole purpose of getting the gold.  I usually do end up seeing nominated films in some form or another, but I have the benefit of context since much time has passed.

You think Slumdog was actually made as Oscar bait?  I don't see that at all.  The movie is hardly the drawn out, pretentious, period-piece type movie that has 'made for Oscar' written on the day the script is drafted.

Now, the studios trying to schedule it is a different beast.  Maybe that happened.  But who gives a shit.  I don't know that, once the film is made, that is really in under anyone's control but the studios.

I doubt a bunch of Indian actors and Danny Boyle, while they were shooting the Bollywood dance number, were thinking "We've got the fucking Oscar in the bag."

Exactly, its far from Oscar bait. Sure, its an underdog story, which often are Oscar bait movies, but those type usually are the more serious drama types, with big name lead in a film that pretty much hinges on the lead's performance. SM sure as shit didnt win anything because of Dev Patel  :lol

The truth is that Hollywood is shutting down most foreign film industries.

Is this movie just some gay bollywood music video?   I've read and heard a lot of impressions but nobody really is specific about what makes it so great.

Crash nor Brokeback Mountain deserved to win in 2005. 2005 was a great year for blockbusters, so-so year for the traditional fall drama. Out of the nominated movies Spielberg's Munich was probably my personal favorite. Shockingly in 2006, 2007, and 2008 the film won I felt really deserved it (Although in 2007 I liked TWBB more but No Country was very deserving, Coen brothers earned it). Hasn't been that much consistency like that in a while (Crash, Chicago...etc).

Whats disingenuous about Crash? I picked it up on a whim without any knowledge of its infamy. Thought it was moving and spoke to some general prevailing truths.  I've had some experience others demonising an ethnicity because of their personal frustrations.  I have problems not letting stereotypes paint an easy picture of someone for myself sometimes.
Moreso, I simply liked it. I dunno about "best movie ever" but I usually don't make recommendations because most people don't like the same things I do.

Fortunately the film has faded from memory, so it would be difficult for me to give a sufficient response as to why it sucks.  I just remember watching it and thinking: 'nearly every scenario in this movie is contrived in order to fit a certain agenda'.  I didn't believe any of the characters in that film actually existed outside the mind of a PC-addled liberal, nor did I get the impression that the makers of the film had the subtlety to portray how racism actually occurs nowadays.
