Yup, Gouken really ain't that great.  I think he's kinda interesting for a not-really-a-shoto-but-he-might-seem-that-way character.  He's got a nice counter move.

He's gotta really nice Ultra too that's pretty effective as anti-air and really easy to combo into.  I haven't seen anything really surprising yet, though.

He's kinda decent at taking out distinguished mentally-challenged fellows, particularly your typical shoto scrub who likes to jump in at you all day.  Just do his medium or hard fireball, and it goes at an upward angle, Oro-style.  Scrubs are all  :o :maf, and you're all  8) ::).

DLC (AKA Unlock Key) #2, the Beauty Pack, is up for Japan on both consoles.  I was just trying those characters briefly and already received some "OMG WHERE DID U GET THAT!?!??!?1111" messages.  That didn't happen with the last pack, wonder why.   :lol

i dunno, i'm just not that into it

i can build up a callous pretty easily

Out of curiosity, what got you into trying this as opposed to the 3343242343434 other fighters out there?

my friends and i used to play sf2 on genesis quite a bit

Did you guys get into Street Fighter Alpha 3?  I ask because it seems like a lot of people are drawn to SF4 for the "SF2 factor," even though Alpha 3 did the same thing about 10 years ago, having all the characters from SF2, and even SF2-style game play mode settings...

no, we never got much into alpha

the next fighting game we got into was tekken, but that didn't last long - we never really got as obsessed with another one after sf2

i'm fine with the ds3 pad, and can pull off most stuff okay - those corners are just digging into my thumb

I agree Alpha series >>>> SFIII. I don't even want to figure out how many different ports of Alpha 3 I have bought over the years, far too many.

It made it hard for me to play SF II HD Remix, the improvements from the alpha games made it hard to go back to in SFII. And that is one problem I had with SF IV. I wish it had more Alpha characters, only 4? Come on. Hopefully in the various updates (Ono implied they will probably do a Championship Edition at some point) we'll get a few more. I rather have a few more Alpha folk than T. Hawk and DeeJay anyway.

For you guys just getting into this game or back into fighters after a long time, one piece of advice I can give you that will work WONDERS against these "shoto scrubs" is to simply NOT JUMP.  Just walk up to them and be amazed as they do endless dragon punches, which you will block or avoid, leaving room to punish them for this over and over and OVER again.  It's uncanny that after all these years, some people just cannot fathom another player not jumping into their "invincible" dragon punch.

When fighting a shoto, what's the best way to advance when they break out the projectiles? I have been jumping over them, to mixed success.

Meh, I'm like one of the only people I know who liked SF III (especially 3rd Strike) better than Alpha.  I liked SF II just fine, too, tho.  But I really dug 3rd Strike.

I really want to pick this up, but due to the lack of fightpad availability I'll probably hold off for a bit.

Am I crazy or is Dan actually decent in this game?

For those of you who've picked up the TE sticks; have they continued to meet your expectations now that you've gotten a day or two or real world use?

He's not as bad as he is in some other games.  He's gotta decent DP, a usable fireball (a big change for Dan), and a few good pokes.  His hurricane kick is pretty shitty, but does good damage in its EX form.  The light version gives you a little hop-over mix-up against rising opponents that has some use.  His super is typically awful, but you should probably be using all your meter on EX anyway.

As for the TE stick -- the thing fucking rocks.  It's the best out-of-the-box stick I've ever used and perfectly satisfies all of my personal preferences. :bow Madcatz :bow2

I should add that after playing around with the FightStick quite a bit, I think it's exceptional, and if I weren't so concerned about the reliability and longevity of the Madcatz components, I would have been fine with having that one instead.  I think it's better than the HORI EX2, anyway.

I have a grudge against that particular HORI stick, but other folks EX2s that I've used weren't quite as bad as mine; I got shafted with a defective stick that was retardedly loose out of the box and didn't return to neutral without some help, and then the PCB shattered without any good reason leaving me with an ugly green pile of scrap.  I'm not exactly a fan of any of HORI's other sticks either.

Unlocking characters always sucks, but at least you can get the regular six super-fast.  Akuma and Gouken aren't too bad either...it's just Seth that's tedious.

I think they should of just had Gouken and Seth (MAYBE Akuma) as hidden unlockable characters, and everyone else open from the start.  You already have to unlock titles, icons, personal actions, character colors, artwork, and movies...isn't that enough?

Not costumes, colors.  They are keeping the costume as lame "DLC" unlock-keys.  Personal actions aren't taunts...I can't figure out what the hell they are, actually.   :lol  (Maybe it's what they say during taunts, I never pay attention to it.)

You can get all the extra colors by going through time attack and survival NORMAL levels 1-16.

This game is polished to hell.  The IU elements are a big step above from Capcom's previous stuff.  Everything seems more intuitive, like choosing the difficulty at the arcade mode screen instead of going into the options.

Fei Long's no shoto, and Sakura is kinda different.  The same boring tactics can't really be done with her.  She has a lot of nice combos.  When it comes to "shotos" I like using Dan and Sakura.

If you don't mind paying a bit more, you can always get a U.S. or Japan account and then buy points online.  I use stuff bought on my Japanese account on my main U.S. account all the time.

The safe, guaranteed way to get Gouken:

-Make sure you have Akuma unlocked AND have completed the game with him once!
-Now pick any character.  You can play on an easier difficulty level and at one round (leave the timer at 99).
-Get two perfects and four (three may work) ultra-finishes before you reach Seth.
-Make sure not to lose a round, BUT remember that if Seth or anyone else is being a little bitch, you can always hit start on controller 2 to interrupt the match right before you lose, and when you go back to arcade mode, you will start the match over with no losses!

I did this with Ryu, and did NOTHING but spam fireballs over and over on the very easy difficulty.  Getting perfects the first two matches was a snap this way.  On easy difficulties, the CPU also falls for his ultra pretty easily.

Seth can be a bitch to get (it took me so many tries to clear the game with Dhalsim alone), but once you get used to his bullshit things get easier.

After using it for the past few days I highly recommend it. I can pull off Guile and Vega's Super Combo almost everytime now and can throw a steady stream of quarter circle moves without fail. I also tested it out on SamSho 2 and works beautifully there as well. The weight and the length of it really helps out too. It feels sturdy and durable. Now if I can just get the damn thing recognized by MAME and Kawaks then I'd be set.

It's not really hard with any character.  A ducking heavy kick takes care of the enemies, it's just really annoying to do.

I unlocked Gouken after getting 3 perfects, then every other round ending with an ultra, even beating Gouken with an ultra.  I finished with Akuma before this too.  I'm a bit underwhelmed by him.

I also realized that the two things the new characters share are Ryu style inputs (none are charge style) and they all have a directional gimmick with their attacks.

Went to Best Buy during my lunch break and they had SFIV up as a 360 demo instead of the usual Rock Band. So I got in line, beat a bunch of little kids' asses, and left the store feeling like a real man.   :punch

I was surprised to see a decent amount of people standing around trying to watch what was going on. Made me pine for the days of huddling around and waiting for a fight in an arcade.

I am having the exact same problem using the Saturn pad. It keeps registering EX Shoryukens instead of the Ultra.

Someone on GAF said that Capcom deliberately loosened and streamlined the command inputs to make them easier to pull off on shitty d-pads. Is there any truth to that?

yup, same problem here.

pretty sure they did change the inputs to make them easier.  Go into training mode and turn on the option that lets you see what you're pressing, it shows how some things register even when they don't make sense.

The commands have definitely been loosened.  After playing solely with a stick I tried using the PS3 DS3 pad and uh, it's fucking awesome with SFIV.  I'm doing amazingly well and pulling off every combo and move/super 99%.  I went back to HD Remix and I am definitely not pulling off stuff with that accuracy.  Whatever they did to loosen the timings made the PS3 controller awesome for SFIV and I'm damn glad they did it.

I just use L2 for all 3 punches, R2 for all 3 kicks for ultras and my thumb on square/x for throw & triangle/circle for focus.  That way everything is easy to pull off.

Has Zangief been super gimped?  I can't seem to combo his jumping knee into his SPD or his body slam into it.  I mean on the plus side he can focus attack -> those, but my bread & butter Zangief SPD lead ins were jumping attacks :(

Agreed. Also, why do I have to go through TWO MENUS (and like a minute and a half) just to continue in arcade mode? If you select continue it should instantly take you back to the match, not this loading, character select, loading bullshit. (I'm AWFUL at this game, so it's a legitimate gripe)

I sacrificed a win just to pull off Dan's Legendary Taunt

And yeah, I'm playing this with a stick right now, but I plugged in the saturn controller earlier and it worked for all types of characters perfectly, even charge guys.  Only problem is that using throw is awkward, but I considered reversing the order so weak punch/kick are the 3rd row instead of first.  I'll stay with the arcade stick for now, it's only VERY annoying when I can't pull off a super/ultra, end up wasting a chunk of the bar, and doing a a move I totally didn't want to do.

btw, Gouken is better than I first thought.  Only awful thing about him is his terrible hurricane kick move.

The online community on PS3 is pretty ehhhhh.  I tried playing some ranked matches with Zangief and all I fought were shotos EVERY TIME.  Most of them have no idea what to do against a big russian walk up to them and throwing their ass over and over, lol.

Ken seems kinda worse than Ryu.  I kept having people do their Ken ultras which set them straight to the sky when they missed/was blocked which gave me a free ultra/super/ex SPD when they landed.

yeah, it's worse than I thought it would be.  It just came out and I'm having trouble finding a good match.  When I do find a good opponent, I fight as long as I can.  This one guy I was fighting unlocked seth and we had a good couple rounds there.

and no custom soundtrack online with the PS3 is so poor

how do you play the same person more than once?  It kept dumping me back to the search for quick match/custom game menu after each fight.

that's odd

every match I played it took me back to the lobby, we hit ready, and another fight started.

I don't think you can keep fighting the same person in Ranked matches.

Oh shit, Amazon actually shipped out one of the controllers I ordered!   :o

Yeah, I popped into EB to return the fucked-up PS3 fight pad I got the other day, and a bunch of guys were crammed in the store, huddling around the demo kiosk.  Also lucked out and got another fight pad, which seems to work fine!

Fuck this game in the ass.

With Ken, I can get two perfects off the bat, and typically one or two ultra finishes before everything goes to hell. The game starts registering regular flaming dragon punches...

Fuck this. I just want to unlock Gouken.

I'm telling you, follow what I said above.  Forget using your favorite character, forget any real tactics-- just pick Ryu and fireball, fireball, FIREBALL, EX fireball, super fireball.

Fuck this game in the ass.

I am having the exact same problem using the Saturn pad. It keeps registering EX Shoryukens instead of the Ultra.

Someone on GAF said that Capcom deliberately loosened and streamlined the command inputs to make them easier to pull off on shitty d-pads. Is there any truth to that?

Yes, apparently so.  You can thank Dimps for that it seems.

Drohne destroyed me. I suck. :'(

I like C. Viper, but I fucking hate her ultra move. That shit has absolutely no range at all and she's completely vulnerable after it misses.

Also, Vega is an annoying motherfucker. I don't know how to fight him. I can't even block some of his attacks.

Most, if not all characters' ultras make them completely vulnerable if you miss with it.  One of the things I notice new players do all the time is get set to do an ultra when the bar fills up.  I think it's almost instinct...don't do it unless it's safe!  If you don't do it all, chances are the other guy you're fighting will fuck up because he thinks that's what you're trying to do, too!

Viper's ultra might be good after a knock up?  It also works well close up.  And use that DP move that makes her hit the ground; people don't expect it!  There's a way to combo it into her kick special, but I can't remember if that's EX only or not.

I don't use Viper, but Vega is definitely a character who got gimped to hell and totally sucks now.  He should be a lot easier to beat compared to previous games.  He's really, REALLY easy to knock out of his air attacks now, and I find that focus attacks really fuck up his ground game when you fight someone who tends to just sit on the ground and slide/roll attack/stab at you over and over again.  He's a breeze to beat with Cammy especially.

Has Zangief been super gimped?  I can't seem to combo his jumping knee into his SPD or his body slam into it.  I mean on the plus side he can focus attack -> those, but my bread & butter Zangief SPD lead ins were jumping attacks :(

'Gief is one of the best characters in the game, bar none.  He wasn't gimped...they made him better than ever.  He may have lost some old stuff, but he fucking rocks.  Coming back to Cammy again though, I notice that she is so fast that I'm able to cannon spike him 99% of the time he is close and doing his SPD animation.  And her cannon drill goes right under his lariat.

btw, Gouken is better than I first thought.  Only awful thing about him is his terrible hurricane kick move.

It has its uses.  It can be used like an anti-air, and since he sticks his foot out before he does it, it's easy to catch someone off guard with it since the reach is a little longer (and on the other side of the coin, easy to get hit out of it).  I love his counter move.  LOVE IT.

What you are describing is the online community in any 2D fighter on any system.   :lol  Did you try modifying your custom search to find people with the same skill level as you or higher?  Not sure if that helps or not.

On PS3, I find that I can NEVER find matches if I do quick or custom.  I have to create my own.  This is the only PS3 fighter I have where I have this problem.

Player matches let you fight again...

I'm an idiot, I didn't know how to do focus attacks until about 30 minutes ago. The only people I can kinda use so far are Chun-Li, M. Bison, and C. Viper. Bison is my favorite so far, I just have trouble doing his charge down moves.

I couldn't figure out how to knock Vega out of his air attacks at all. :'(

Is it just me or are supers(and ultras) a lot more hard to pull off than in SFII? In SF II HD Remix I alway pull them off the first time I hit the inputs but it seems almost random in SFIV if I can get it to go through, at least for me.
