Anyone practice martial arts up in this bitch?
« on: February 06, 2009, 04:17:34 PM »
I've been wanting to start for a long time, and I think I'm gonna just give it a go. So what's a nice one to start with, keeping in mind that I'm sadly a fairly skinny type person? Also, might be a dumb question, but I'm 24 years old, so am I too old to start such a thing?

Every fight can be won by either elbowing the opponent in the face or stabbing them; learning more than that is pointless.

i was so fuckin' close to my black belt, too, and then i went to college :'(

i took goju-ryu after i graduated, but there wasn't a huge crossover in forms, although i still kicked ass. stupid sensei wouldn't let me keep my rank! isshin-ryu even incorporates a lot of goju-ryu techniques! I BLAME TATSUO SHIMABUKU

I don't really see the problem with learning at your age.  I mean, you probably can't go into Tiger Sholman's and learn, but you probably wouldn't want to.

i'm gonna go back into martial arts as soon as my daughter gets into grade school proper. there's a generic shotokan school nearby -- well, they don't list any specific styles -- and i'll probably just go there. they're semi-contact (no contact for kids) -- i just can't do full contact any more in my soft old age, and i don't have anything much to prove these days :'(

i kinda wish the karate dojo i went to as a little kid didn't close down. that shit was more hardcore. actually, that would be the one that made me a beast as a youngin.

Got as high as a 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwan Do about 15 years ago. Haven't practiced it for years though. Got my black belt then kinda quit. I don't think its ever too late to start it. If I had more time and money, then I would probably start back again. Its awesome for flexibility, etc.

Always kinda wondered what happens if you start back up as a previous black belt after years and years off. Are you technically still a black belt?  ???

Currently, I practice muay thai. I have previous praying mantis style kung fu experience from childhood. I have always loved martial arts and recently (as of November actually, so I've been doing it almost a year) I decided to get back on the horse with muay. I love it.

I'm drawn to practical traditional martial arts. The problem is that I want to try them all - or rather, the ones that interest me, which is a lot. My current martial art interests are:

muay thai -  obvious since it's what I practice. I love the full body use I get from it. Knees, elbows, kicks. Punching a punching bag on a bad day is fun. Sparring shows me parts of myself I never knew were there. I love raw roughness that comes from a day of muay thai. I love that there's not much organization or tiers like in other martial arts. There's the Kru, and everyone else. I love it. I'd love to practice it for life.

bajiquan - I saw a Kung Fu Quest video (found below) a while back it just really appeals to me for all the reason muay does, but I find it even more my style for some reason. It helps that I'm a massive Cheeaboo. But the Bajiquan I found in that video is only bajiquan found in that video. When I search for baji fist videos on youtube and stuff, I'm met with videos and practice that looks nothing like the video below. The baji fist as shown in the video looks almost like an external martial art, whereas baji quan I'm finding in videos looks internal, and very tai chi-like, when I'm interested in practical traditional martial art technique.

kyoukushin karate - Fuck yes. Hard, physical shit with strikes and throws. My shit. THAT'S MY SHIT. I REALLY WANNA TRY THIS. My interest in karate is very limited because most styles don't appeal to me and aren't HARD style from what I've seen, but kyoukushin mannnnn...WHEW.

Gojuryu and shorin-ryu karate - fuck yes. Similar to kyoukushin, they seem practical and HARD. In goju ryu's case - being the school of HARD AND SOFT - it looks like a mix.

Traditional jujitsu/aikido/judo - I'm also interested in throw arts. I dunno which one to pick!

Tai chi - I know base tai chi but want to explore it more. I have picked taji quan for my internal art. That one is easy.

Just god dammit, so many interests. :brazilcry

I'll say this with the caveat that I'm not the type who wants to practice the "best" style, or the "strongest" style. I think that quantifier is stupid and balls out dumb by itself, I just want to experience them.

I'm gonna cross off karate on my list. There's no real good karate places that interest me. I will wait to try it until I find that kyoukushin and okinawa karate.

I'm trying to limit this to one strike art and one grapple art for life. The rest, I just try to experience along the way.

Bajiquan is rare in the states, so that means I'm limited when it comes to my EXPLOSIVE art that I wanna try so bad. I will make the ground shake someday you'll see :tocry

So I'm going to stick with muay thai for ehhhhh, two or three years. I will have a shelf life with muay anyways because I'll be in my thirties then and I hear muay can fuck your knees up if you do it at a long period of time. :(

For grapple art, I chose judo. Judo has many jujutsu techniques but it's not as passive as aikido, either. Jujutsu places also rarely do randori , and I need one on one spar situations. Jujutsu often has the learner just repeat the same moves without application, and that's not my style. In muay, in class, after we learn a move, we go directly into practicing that move with a live partner. Any other option is just :yeshrug for me. That's not a knock against jujutsu, but it ain't my learning style. Japanese Jujutsu is also for intents and purposes...pretty much gone in terms of influence in the martial arts world. It's about judo or bjj, and it seems most people in the states only give credit to jujutsu only as so far that judo and bjj come from jujutsu's lineage out of respect. :yeshrug It is what it is. Also, judo is competitive as FUCK. Competition :hyper

I think muay thai (elbows, kicks, knees, punches) with some bajiquan (elbow assaults :hyper :preach throws, shoulder checks and slams), and judo (throws, arm bars, holds) would be :lawd in combination. I'm still not sure about the strike art because I still haven't experienced baji yet and IT'S SO RARE but that's the plan.

I just didn't feel like making another thread. My apologies. Esch, I apologize because you have to explain yourself and especially if you felt slighted by my comments.  I know that teacher/environment > style but I just want to experience things more than anything, especially if it looks cool. I plan on picking a strike and grapple art and sticking with them, but I'd like to experience and spar against other styles along the way, I guess. I am going to spar against visitors this week, they are muay thai but one of them has bjj experience. It'll be my first spar outside of muay rules. It is going to be a full contact sparring session.

One of my favorite things about attending the gym is helping the overweight guy there. He doesn't care, no one cares, gives it his all. I was overweight myself when I first started going. One thing I learned about my experience there was that I just really hate regular gyms. :lol I thought I had hated exercising, but it was just that I hated the routine and mundane nature of going to a regular one. So I first picked a martial art primarily to lose weight, but the thing that surprised me the most about it was that I was exercising and having fun, and it never felt like "exercise" even though it totally was. I highly suggest anyone who is overweight and is scared of martial arts because of that, just jump in. You will get most of if not all of the stuff you would normally get from a regular gym and likely in a less hostile environment. It doesn't feel like "work" although it totally is, and it's never boring. I'd say pick any style and it'll do if they're teaching right. You'll get gassed, but you'll be smiling and laughing the entire time. It used to be, I thought that I should lose the weight first and then do a martial art. Nuh uh. Do both at the same time.

Jujutsu often has the learner just repeat the same moves without application, and that's not my style.

You'll be doing the same thing with Judo, FYI. If it's a traditional (Kodokan) dojo, you'd be doing nothing but Uchikomi and sweeps for six months straight.
