Oh yeah, ghost in the shell was amazingly boring.  I remember waiting so long to see it and being so disappointed by the time it ended.  I don't even remember what happened clearly.  Did she fuse with another robot or something???

kinda.  I haven't seen it in years so I can't really talk about it now.  But I recall quite enjoying it at the time.  More recently I can say I really liked Oishi's live-action Polish sci-fi flick 'Avalon', which is kind of the same movie, only now even more obtuse and drawn out.  What can I say, I'm a sucker for a effective mood piece and pretty pictures.

as a franchise, GITS mystifies me.  It would be like making a Blade Runner II that's faithful to the original, so practically no action and even more heady talk.  It just seems like such a weird foundation to build anything of mass appeal on.

I don't quite understand why there's such alot of crossover between gamers and peeps who watch anime.  I mean I know why I do it, mostly escapism, but its strange to me how "nerds" often share such a common pool of interests.

A lot of video games come from Japan and share the same art style, character design, and storytelling as anime would be my guess.

I can't really remember, but I think she fuses with the Puppet Master.  In the comics, she loses her body (forgot how) and ends up in some dude's body instead.  First time I saw the movie, I fell asleep halfway through.  In fact I don't think I ever did see the whole thing.

I like Appleseed (the comics, not those movies) and Dominion a hell of a lot better, if we're talking Shirow stuff.  Also Orion.

I'm sure you're aware of the recently released and re-tuned Ghost in the Shell 2.0?  Its the original film with a redone score, 6.1 sound, redone CGI (the CGI was noticably bad in the original release), and all the animation has been fine tuned or CG enhanced.  It was apparently done to make the original film more in line visually with its sequel and TV series.  There's going to be an eventual American Blu-Ray release, you might as well wait on that.  HD sample here.

yeah, but i don't like what i've seen of it. really all the more reason to get the original bd while i can. there's actually a japanese box set with both versions. but it's $140 and i've spent too much money lately :'(

basically. being a kid and playing phantasy star or samurai shodown on the one hand -- seeing robotech or akira on the other hand -- there's a connection there, though i never got super into anime

I'd like to think my comments made a difference and finally put an end to this dark era of Japanese animation infecting American pop culture.  Now we can go back to the way things were - celebrity cameos on Scooby-Doo and superior American animation!

That's because you're an anime nerd and anime nerds are offended by the term.

But we are human beings, with real thoughts and emotions - and we will blast JAPANIMATION all day long!

JAPANIMATION SUCKS!

From hence forth, Evilbore Ltd., its subsidiaries and subscribers will refer to all Japanese animation as "Japanimation" in an effort to rid our fine establishment and country from this animated garbage drawn by soulless Japanese kids.

I watched Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust last night. Anyone that says they have an opinion about anime but hasn't seen Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is flat wrong and an idiot. I mean, I didn't want to have to say that, but there it is and it's the straight truth. You can even check with a scientist and they'll tell you the same thing.

I think it was Media Play that used to have "Japanimation" signs in their video sections.  You could go there and hear some nerd bitching to the clerk about it on occasion, if you were "lucky."

What do you use, techno?  Electronic music?  Or just the names of each sub-genre?  I love this kind of music but I'm such a noob that I sometimes can't identify which is which.   :-[

Like Eric said, either edm, dance music, or the names of the genre. I'm a bit OCD and love to neatly classify everything into their genres though.
