TOS Movie ST is the best ST.

Undiscovered Country > Khan > Rest

Oh, and man, how all the Next Generation movies blew chunks. Pretty much every single one of them is a showcase for the two thespians in the group, Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner, to trot out their acting chops. What made the TV show great was how all the characters interacted with each other, not a series of monologues.

Overall I think the TOS crew worked better in film rather than on television while the TNG crew worked better as a tv show rather than on film.

Oh and the new tv spot for this is pretty awesome. You can spot Nimoy in one of the shots:

 star trek will enjoy a prestigious world premiere at a near 1600-something capacity at the sydney opera house concert hall in a week. I send the good word to our paramount pictures australia team for pulling it off. i'll be sure to post warp speed as much of the negative word that will leak. so remember... one week.

Why is Star Trek opening in Australia one day before opening in the US? This is a new trend I'm noticing where American films are opening abroad before in the States.  What's the deal?
10 years ago movies made most of their money domestically. But the worldwide market has been booming for films and now often foreign gross outgrosses domestic numbers. So there is more of a focus on foreign markets now.

I think that's what they usually do now with British films. Didn't Harry Potter come out here earlier as well?
I might be wrong on this though. But yeah, I'm all for earlier movie releases.

Makes sense.  I noticed that the last Bond movie came out in Europe before the States too, but 10 years ago when I lived in Germany I'd have to wait a couple months before an American film finally made it over.
Well that has always been that way for Bond I believe. Bond is decently popular in America but HUGE in Europe.

Quote
As Paramount Pictures readies the May 8 release of its "Star Trek" franchise relaunch, the studio is moving forward with a sequel, and has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to pen the screenplay.

J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the latest chapter, is onboard to produce the follow-up alongside his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk. No decision has been made yet on whether Abrams will return behind the camera for the sequel.

Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof also are receiving producing credit on the sequel.

Story is still in the embryonic stage, but the trio are aiming to deliver their script to the Melrose studio by Christmas for what would likely be a summer 2011 release.

"There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet," said Lindelof, co-creator with Abrams of ABC's "Lost" who produced the upcoming "Trek" but did not contribute to Orci and Kurtzman's screenplay. "But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."

As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.

"Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month," he said. "With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."

Though Orci and Kurtzman have worked together as a writing team for more than 12 years, the duo has worked with Lindelof on only one screenplay: DreamWorks' "Cowboys and Aliens," which they are currently writing together.

Paramount has high hopes for the "Star Trek" relaunch, and is pulling out all the stops on the marketing front. Studio began a full-scale campaign six months before the film's May bow.

Quote
The new Star Trek movie is amazing- easily the best Trek movie since The Wrath of Khan, and a veritable feast of sight and sound: A captivating adventure that grabs you from the first and doesn't let go. The effects are staggering, finally what the stories have deserved so richly. There are enough huge fireballs, shattering explosions and exciting fights to go around. The movie's first 5-10 minutes are of note I feel: This sequence is brilliant and had me immediately on the edge of my seat.

Here's how they showed it:

Quote
Then the movie started, James Horner’s fantastic title music played over the credits, some audience members snickering at “and introducing Kirstie Alley” (I think she’s actually really good as the Vulcan, Saavik, in Khan) and then the first scene. The print was beautiful and then lines started appearing on the print. Booooo… then cuts… then it skipped frame, running for about 10 seconds split in half… up is down, down is up and all that before locking up, the frame burning.

Tim jumped on stage to say he’s going up to fix the problem and called for Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof to kill some time. They show up, Lindelof going, “Okay… so, you wanna know what the monster is?” Clearly talking about the black smoke monster on LOST. People started shouting out LOST things (“I want to know what the statue is!” etc etc) and suddenly a man shows up on stage wearing a trench coat and a hat.

This man is holding a film can in his hand. He removes the hat and right there is Leonard Nimoy.

The audience went ballistic, standing ovation for the man, the girl behind me losing her shit. He takes a mic asking what’s going on here… why would you only show 10 minutes of the new movie? “JJ made a good movie, why only show 10 minutes of it?” Then he took a vote. Who wants to only see 10 minutes of the movie? Crickets. Who wants to see the whole thing? Thunderous applause .

And within seconds Orci, Kurtzman, Lindelof and Nimoy are off the stage (not before Nimoy could throw out one more Vulcan salute, of course) and JJ Abrams’ Star Trek plays.

Even though I am hyped for this movie the surrounding issue about how these guys saw it has to inflate the quality of the movie in their minds.

Going to a showing of a old Star Trek movie which happens all the time and randomly have LEONARD NIMOY show up with a print for a movie not out for over a month has to get them so riled up that it'd be hard to not love it.

Exactly.

Cheebs makes a good point that the atmosphere in which they watched the movie has doutblessly affected their opinions on it.

Obviously, I have made no secret of my skepticism of this movie, but I will likely see it opening night, with hopefully an open mind.  I will hope that it is good.

But I see almost no way for it to surpass the Wrath of Khan, First Contact, or even The Voyage Home in my eyes.  It will doubtlessly have superior action, but there is no way that this "new" Kirk/Spock/McCoy will come close to matching the performance of the originals, nor most of the rest of the cast. (though I think the idea of Simon Pegg as Scotty is an inspired choice.  oh, and Bruce Greenwood as Pike?  okay, that should be good too)

if you've never liked anything he's done, then my guess is that this won't really change your mind.

in my case, i was never a huge star trek fan. i know ENOUGH about the stuff and have watched a few of the key episodes and read a few books Fnord Chan suggested over on GAF, but it never really stuck with me.

so i'm willing to view this on its own merits.

The original Star Trek mostly sucked, so I can't really be nostalgic.  Next generation, however, was mostly quality.

i used to think that but then i went through and watched some of it on spike and was kind of appalled.  entertaining, yes, but i wouldn't really call it "good" per se.

If you haven't read it yet, get John M. Ford's short story collection (Heat of Fusion). Soooo many astounding stories in there.

http://www.amazon.com/Heat-Fusion-Other-Stories-John/dp/031285546X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239214995&sr=1-1

His small press collection (From the End of the 20th Century) is also great, but start with Heat of Fusion.

http://www.amazon.com/End-Twentieth-Century-John-Ford/dp/0915368730/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239214951&sr=8-3

So fucking sad we will never see the end of the Alterneties stories - shady corporation finds a preexisting human-sized network connecting hundreds of alternate worlds; travels to them, subjugates them, reopens them as tourist attractions. Then there's a big earthquake at Ouray, CO where Alternaties HQ is located, and everything gets all broken, disconnected, and otherwise fucked up. The existing stories are kind of a mixture of Philip Jose Farmer's "everything goes" Riverworld scenario with interesting period stories with a SF twist.

Maybe one day someone will find a manuscript or outline of the remaining stories. :(

Apparently Nimoy & Lindeolf came up with that idea themselves and had to convince Paramount to let them do it.

Nimoy always has come across as a nice guy, a lot more down-to-earth than say Shatner.

Quote
Blasting onto the screen at warp speed and remaining there for two hours, the new and improved “Star Trek” will transport fans to sci-fi nirvana. Faithful enough to the spirit and key particulars of Gene Roddenberry’s original conception to keep its torchbearers happy but, more crucially, exciting on its own terms in a way that makes familiarity with the franchise irrelevant, J.J. Abrams’ smart and breathless space adventure feels like a summer blockbuster that just couldn’t stay in the box another month. Paramount won’t need any economic stimulus package with all the money it’ll rake in with this one globally, and a follow-up won’t arrive soon enough.

Quote
Paced at warp speed with spectacular action sequences rendered brilliantly and with a cast so expert that all the familiar characters are instantly identifiable, the film gives Paramount Pictures a new lease of life on its franchise.

Fans of the "Star Trek" saga will be delighted to see Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Bones (Karl Urban) and all the others in the early part of their lives as the Starship Enterprise takes its maiden voyage. The film is so much fun, however, that it will draw in moviegoers just looking for a sensational ride. The boxoffice should beam up enormous returns.

It's getting pretty much perfect reviews. Clearly is going to be a critical lovefest overall. I would be shocked if this finishes below 85% on RT.

Some of the more level headed reviews seem to hit at a really strong opening, then the movie spends most of the time trying to juggle some not so impressive action with fan service, and a plot where a ton of shit moves but nothing actually happens.

MI 3 had all these cool reviews and hype, ended up being shit.

JJ Abrahams must know some secret sauce for critics.

?
 Actor's age:
Kirk = 29
Spock = 32
McCoy = 37
Scotty = 39
Uhura = 31
Sulu = 37
Chekov =20

Only Chekov would be a baby. 30's = babies?

Wha? MI 3 didn't get nearly as fantastic reviews as Trek is getting. Not even close.
