A Ducati? That's too nice. Go for the TRIUMPH. That or rice it up with a Zuki.

I really like the style of the GT 1000s, and since I no longer plan on buying a new car this year, the price is modest enough.  A new Ducati GT is like 12k, right?  That's probably half as much as I'd spend on a car.

But please, gimme the "whys" on your suggestions.  I am newb total.

I was pretty much kidding. Triumphs suck. Every person I've ever seen ride a Triumph has been lame. I have heard nothing but good things about Ducati, but then again, I only really know one 'biker guy'.

Actually, Ducati is like a fantastic model I think. You should totally get one. You'd be fancy.

I was originally looking at Kawasaki crotch rocket things, and one of my friends was like "Dude, you're a Ducati or Buell guy."  And I liked the bikes he showed me by them, but I liked the Ducati shit more.

The Ducati GT is an insane, insane bike.  Then again, any motorcycle you buy that's $12,000 will be a fucking ride.

ergh, uh, practical help.  I know no one that owns a bike.  How do I go about getting a permit or license?  Do I just go to the DMV, do another written test, and go on a test ride?

Dudes there a difference between cafe racers, nakeds and streetfighters.
Most of what Jinfash has posted are nakeds.

Streetfighter:
Triumph Speed Triple

Cruiser, that will kick sport bikes in a straight line:
Yamaha Vmax

On a serious note I would not reccommend something over 600cc for a novice, invalidating my post. Maybe get a Honda VTR250 which looks like the Ducati posted by Jin, a Yamaha SR400 modded which looks like a cafe racer or if you want to kill yourself a Street Triple which looks like the Speed Triple but is the 600cc range.

Why does cc matter so much?  I mean, if I start with a higher cc, that just means I'll acclimate towards that more quickly.   That Ducati gt 1000 is like over 900cc and I wanteeeee

The gameplan is:

1) Pass the learner's permit test.  That will give me the ability to drive by meself during daylight, without a passenger.
2) After I pass, troll craigslist for a cheap bike
3) Eventually take test before fall, since that's when the daylight goes away
4) See how I feel about buying something fancier at that point

How much is insurance gonna run me?  Cheaper or more than car.  I have heard both.

First: Ducati have a rep for being posers i.e. rich guys like yourself that ride to a cafe on the weekend and have brunch and the rest of the week their bikes spend the rest of their time in the garage or some such.
Second: From what I understand the U.S has no limits for novice riders but Yurop and other countries do which limit cc's. CC's in and of themselves aren't a hard indicator of danger. A 1000cc cruiser is  safer than a 250cc race  replica.
Also a rider on a 250cc bike that knows what he's doing can probably out out-accelerate and out-race a novice on a 500cc one.

Get yourself some proper riding gear, I know you've got a death wish but skin grafts are no fun for anyone. Maintenance should be more expensive than a car, tyres should be more expensive than a car and need to be changed about twice as often as a car depending on use, bike type etc.

Cheap.  500cc.  Apparently a good starter bike.  Could probably find a 2-3 year old model really cheap.

I think Triumph says I'm different and rich but I'm not a wanker about it. They make some nice retro bikes, a good/great sports bike-Daytona 675 and of course a couple of street fighters. Oh yeah they make 3 cylinder bikes which is also different.

Generally young people riding cruisers are hah. If you want something easy( (in terms of rider position) to ride get a motard, streetfighter with an upright position.

Note I do not actually ride a bike, just read a shit load and talked to a few people who do ride so take everything I say for an Australian-centric, possibly bullshit pov. Though Ducati's are for posers and guidos and Aprilia's are too by association.

Hell I'd say 40, maybe 25 if you're in the south or live rurally.

Suzuki GS500 or SV650 are good bikes and should be found for cheap. I'd stay away from fairings since they are expensive to replace.

Ok, so, if I take the course, I get to bypass the written and driving test and they just give me my endorsement with no limitations.  I think I am going to do this.

I am going to do it at Kirkland (unless anyone has a better suggestion--http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/motoschools.html).  They, I guess, use 300cc or less bikes for the course.

I may do this within the next several weeks.  And then I will get a couple grand together and get me something in the $5k-ish range.
