Yeah SO4 must have tanked, doing 135k or lower.

Well Killzone 2 did better than LBP's first run (only had 4 days to get 200k I believe). But like LBP, it should plummet by the next month.

More PS3 owners bought SF than Killzone, lol.

I think this just shows that Sony marketing fucking sucks.  I mean when have they actually marketed a game so well it sells millions in the last few years?  They need to fire everyone in marketing and get a new department.

I'm 100% convinced that marketing is all that games need to sell well this generation (outside occasional word of mouth title like some Wii shovelware).  Capcom marketed SFIV very, very well and suddenly everyone and their moms whose never played a fighting game in their life wanted a piece of it.

there are only two PS3 games I would expect to sell well: God of War 3 and Gran Turismo 5 (in 2011 lol)

doubt Uncharted 2, Infamous or anything else will really top sales like anything Nintendo or Microsoft puts out, but I don't really care that much.  PS3 will continue to slowly fail while providing games I enjoy, and like the gamecube, Sony might rethink the next console.  I just hope that the next system isn't as poor as the Wii.  I'm hoping for a them to get fully behind a PSP2.

I agree about KZ2, Bebpo.  It is almost as Sony doesn't now how to generate hype, both Nintendo and MS have run a clinic on marketing this gen--Nintendo with the alpha mom stuff and MS with the hardcore stuff--Gears, Halo 3, Gears 2, while SCE just keeps putting on horrible campaigns.

I can't believe that before the announcement of SFIV people thought that capcom shouldn't even bother with the series, and don't get me started on how everyone reacted when it was announced that it's gonna be in 3D.

:bow Capcom :bow2

Didn't SF3 sell like absolute shite, tho? I remember seeing it did just a few hundred thousand. Or that might have just been the PSP version.

Sony's game lineup really only sells to people who already have a PS3.

Their PS2 lineup was different because they had products like Singstar, Buzz, Eye Toy, Ratchet, Jak etc.. which were unlike anything else available elsewhere.

Now Nintendo has taken their social gaming, Microsoft took their core gaming segment, and now they've only got a price drop left to spike interest. Which it should do quite well, but leaving it this late really makes things tough

Yeah well, that was back when I thought Sony would get it together on the marketing end of things. That has obviously not happened. Maybe the PS3 owners never had it in them to make it a big hit, but shit marketing hasn't helped. Given the variables, I really don't see how this isn't a pretty damned good number for a PS3 exclusive. Did Uncharted even sell that much in the whole month it was out? I expected KZ2 to make a bigger splash given how marketable it is, but then that assumes that this marketability would be taken advantage of.

Sony's game lineup really only sells to people who already have a PS3.

Even that is not true, you know. For one, the system seller deal doesn't seem to be a realistic factor these days. But PS3 games don't even sell to existing PS3 owners. We'll see where the game lands (especially worldwide, given the differences in marketing of the game here and there), but over 300k in a few days seems to be far above the norm.

Historical presedence?

there hasnt been a PS3 game this hyped, and probably this expensive (maybe MGS4)

if it doesnt even end up outselling Resistance 2 it will be a stunning faliure imo.

KZ1 if im not mistaken was a million selling franchise on PS2.

It will. And as I recall, KZ1 was only ever a big game in Europe, and I don't think it sold 300k in a couple of days. But realistically, I could see KZ1 working against the sequel.

Who expected either of those to chart? Star Ocean, HOTD, etc, expecting any of them to chart is basically expecting them to beat out Ninty casual flood. Ever since the Nintendomination began the NPD top 10 has been mostly useless in telling what bombed or not.

KZ2 sales are good, when viewed in the context of KZ2 being an average FPS in a market glutted with FPS and exclusive to a tanking system.

Not saying that those games didn't bomb, but the Wii has had some slow boilers that sold well but never made it into the top ten.

I obviously disagree with it being merely average, but to potential buyers, yeah, it's probably just one more shooter among many. On an expensive system. It still should have sold to the existing userbase, but I guess if many of them were fans of the PS2 still hoping that the PS3 will have similar games, a game like this probably isn't so attractive.

Still, it seems odd to cut on marketing when you've already pumped tens of millions of dollars into the game.

Wii's success only good for Nintendo.

New Wii buyers only buy the Wii for WiiFit or/and Mario Kart.

Third party developers don't get any advantage of the Wii hw sales since WiiFit buyers (women+girs) won't buy other games.

The software sales are good all things considered, as you said they don't really sell their own software to their own userbase.

I thought there would have been more of a hardware spike though, but then that was the case across other territories too.

I could see HOTD and Madworld pulling a nmh/boom blox type of sales pattern. 60kish first month and then steadily accumulating sales until a few months go by and they're at 250kish.  De Blob never charted but it ended up doing well. Wii dev costs are cheap enough to make that a successful number.  They just need good word of mouth.

To play devils advocate, KZ2 was only out for two days.  Why is it not an impressive performance?  Granted I don't think they'll recoup the dev costs for a 4 year dev time.

This is why unit sales are really irrelevant in a vacuum. You're not getting the value of retail sales, you're assuming all dev costs are equal and all marketing is equal. So Wii third party stuff not charting isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The other thing is that most Wii software isn't front loaded, it's much more constant.

However Nintendo IS fucked in Japan.  So many bombs.  And I can say that because we get much more complete numbers on a weekly basis.  With supply finally catching up to demand worldwide and the lackluster Japanese performance, 09 is going to be the indicator of whether or not this was a fad all along.

Nah, the Wii will remain successful. There are enough housewives and kids in the world who still want to buy that thing.
Just don't expect them to buy other games besides the usual Nintendo games and some shitty licenced 3rd party title.

And people still ask why 3rd parties are ignoring the Wii. Why shouldn't they? The vast majority of the Wii demographic doesn't care about gaming in general.

Yeah, the usual Nintendo, Capcom or Square Enix game.

Even Gamecube had a few 3rd party million sellers, with half the amount of Wii's userbase.

Serious gamers who own a Wii and a next-gen console, rather want their favorite game to be released on the next-gen console instead of the Wii. 3rd parties know that.

Not exactly.

You're actually right. I've looked it up.

But the quality of those good selling 3rd party games is rather depressing. But I guess that's what the Wii crowd wants...
