The upcoming 20th birthday of Empire Magazine has been guest edited by none other than Steven Spielberg. By the power of his magical directing beard, he appears to have secured some rather nifty exclusives for the mag, and now they’re starting to flood out.

Quite impressively, they’ve got the scoop on Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro’s revised plans for The Hobbit. Previously we’d been told that they were going to make two films, the first an adaptation the novel and the second to bridge the gap between that book and The Fellowship of the Ring. Now, however, it seems that The Hobbit itself is going to take up two full length pictures all by itself.

Empire quote each of the Hobbitmasters. Here’s Del Toro:

"We’ve decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur."

And Jackson:

"We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie. The essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the trilogy."

There was a rumor recently that Del Toro would have a whole trilogy to play with, not two films but Jackson’s comment here about ‘the essential brief’, stepping down from the original plan and suggesting this new idea was how they’d be fulfilling their obligation, leaves me with the impression that the bridge narrative has been ditched altogether.

I’m assuming this spells the end of fan dreams to see Viggo Mortenson’s Aragorn in action again. Here’s hoping Jackson is just keeping a potential third film under his hat and the old rumours were based on something solid.

The special issue of Empire magazine hits UK shelves on the 23rd, and promises much more on The Hobbit, not to mention Tintin and lord knows what else Spielberg has won them access to.

trying to do The Hobbit in the style of LOTR is kind of lame IMO. the book was tonally different and was a children's book, so I think the movie should be as well.

This project is going to keep Del Toro occupied till 2013 I believe. So probably not for quite a while.

Of course you can. I'm sure the 70's (or was it 80's) cartoon of the Hobbit will be better than this. An adaptation does not need to have every single thing in the original in it. The Hobbit cartoon is an excellent movie and for the most part, has basically every single important part in the book.

I remember watching all the time when I was little on Cartoon Network though.

CN used to do these big Lord of the Rings marathons on weekends back in the early 90's airing the two LOTR animated films and the hobbit.

And yeah, I grew up on those LOTR and Hobbit cartoons. When I was a little kid, on trips, my father would bring his Minds Eye Lord of the Rings tapes and we'd listen to the whole story on our trips.

And Cheebs, you DO realize that The Hobbit and LotR are FULL of songs and shit? I mean, the books. The songs in the cartoon do the book justice and keep the story feeling like a crazy ol' tale throughout.

I think it'll be fine. Sure the book is short but the amount of areas that are explored, it would probably come off as rushed in a single movie (trying to run through each area, Middle Earth Gambit). Though, I'm sure the split between the movies will probably be awkward.

I read The Hobbit when I was 8. The only thing that was cool was Gollum. Who I believe doesn't appear until about halfway into the book and then disappears for the rest of the story. The rest of the book was an utter bore.

The Hobbit isn't a particularly interesting story. It's a fun book, I liked it, but there isn't much in there that will translate into a good movie. People on GAF are creaming over the prospect of the battle of five armies but come on: it'll be nothing more than a giant WETA battle. It'll be pretty, will look epic in terms of size, but still won't be anything truly amazing.

It's still a middle aged hobbit, an old wizard (who'll look even older consider Sir Ian isn't growing younger), and 12 dwarves. I guess Del Toro will make a few of them memorable (the angry one, the comic relief one, maybe one for gay subtext, etc) but there's no way that will be as interesting as the variety of the fellowship in LOTR

There's 60 years between Hobbit and LOTR and Tolkien chronicled most of it. There's no Aragorn in The Hobbit, but there's a bunch of Aragorn and Gandalf stuff between Hobbit and LOTR, and that's what the bridge movie was going to cover.
