2.  On the fort below Novac:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'm supposed to investigate it for the ranger in Novac.  I got there, see Legionaires kill them, see the dead NCR and blow myself up on a mine.  I reload and go there again and now there's no Legionaires and only the NCR bodies and I report to the ranger and he says "thanks for the info, but we need to find out who did this!" and I keep going back to the fort but the legionaires never spawn again??  wtfff.  I even tried reloading my save before the first time I tried it and now they never spawn.  Only that one time and I blew myself up.  Is this a glitch?  Or is there a way to get proof it was them?

Didn't play any of this today as I was powering through ME2.  Glad to see that my suspicion was right and there are patches and fixes being developed, so I'll probably just shelve this for a week or so...

Ah, who am I kidding I'll probably play it this weekend.

Went back to an old save game to check. The holotape is sitting in plain sight on top of a stack of three metal boxes right in the middle of the screen as you come in the front door.

i did the .dll trick, changed a couple settings in the .ini, updated to the new nvidia drivers, and it's helped

framerate still bogs in a few weird places (same places every time), and i still get the random white flashes, but overall it's a lot more consistent than it was

Hardcore isn't hardcore.  The lengthy time it takes to restore your health is the only thing that makes it challenging, really.  And purified water is occasionally difficult to come by in the field, but you can refresh your meter by drinking clean water out of the toilet in many towns, so it's easy to prepare for.  Food with high food points is very easy to find, either by buying it or by looting people's refridgerators, stoves and gardens.

Is the Survival skill worth a shit?  Seems like if you're gonna be carrying around food all the time, the HP+ benefit is worth it, but I'm not sure how much it ultimately improves the HP gained from eating and drinking.  Anybody know?

After spending an hour doing the Helios One plant subquest I realize I don't like this game.  Having hundreds of subquests and with each taking 30-60mins to get some measly xp is just a waste of time.  Most of the time is just plodding back and forth through towns/dungeons and not actually doing anything.  Game is not efficient or tightly paced at all, which was my main issue with Fallout 3.  Feels like it'll take 100 hours to get the same amount of gameplay/content as a normal wrpg that's 20 hours.

I've been doing everything and trying to 100% the game so far but I think pretty soon I'm gonna say fuck it and just play the main story, watch the ending and shelve it.

Also the constant crashes, glitches, bugs do not help the experience.

If that's what you're looking for then, yes, you're looking in the wrong place. Elder Scrolls/Fallout 3/New Vegas aren't about tightly-paced narratives, they're about exploration and finding all the little details in the world. If that doesn't interest you, you're likely not going to enjoy the game at all.

Hmm... While I have my issues with the game so far the things you cite as being things you have issues with are the things I like. I like that it's big. And I like that it's not efficient. I think trying for 100% in any game makes it tedious to me. I did a good assortment of side mission in Fallout 3 and the main quest and had a ball. If I had tried to go for 100% in that game, I would have hung myself. Same thing here.

So I guess I'm saying while I'm not sure whether New Vegas is as compelling to me as Fallout 3 was, that would have to do more with the overall arc of the story and the missions and the immersiveness of the world rather than the scope being too much.

The thing is Bebpo, this sort of game appeals to the Morrowind player and Oblivion. There's a main string to follow but it mainly resonates with the people who don't mind trekking all over the place to find a new area. And by exploring you get lots of experience in the process. For instance, instead of fast traveling to a location I may decide to walk there. It'll take more time but I'll fight enemies along the way, get gear if they're human (and caps in turn) and find new areas I may have missed along the way. It just appeals to those who want the exact opposite of linearity.

Trying to play the game like it has a list of boxes to check will take away from its enjoyment.

What I will say though is that this game is so buggy and oddly scripted, it is sucking a lot of the enjoyment out of me.  :maf

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I just went to the NCR jail. The Power Gangers hate me but I put on my power ganger uniform to get close. So the guy at the gate starts talking to me and gives me a bunch of dialogue options. I eventually pay him 100 caps to get in. But the moment I actually approach the door he starts shooting me. This is poor scripting. It wasn't clear that this was some kind of double cross. I think its just a bug. If they hate me then they should hate me on sight. Like shoot on sight. It shouldn't give me the dialogue tree because that is just confusing. Instead the game is very unclear about how the mechanics are working. Still very early but I've already run into a number of these situations so it makes me fear what worse stuff is going to happen ahead. Fucking Obsidian.

Still very early but I've already run into a number of these situations so it makes me fear what worse stuff is going to happen ahead. Fucking Obsidian.

I also found that sort of confusing.  He says he knows who you are; the dialogue tree should've just stopped right there.

If you kill that guy, run off and wait until they're no longer pursuing you, you should be able to freely walk around in there with your Powder Ganger uniform.  IIRC, only guards will recognize you through your disguise.

to me it feels a lot emptier than FO3, despite what i'd read earlier

it also seems to be missing the "found stories" FO3 had, where you'd pick up a series of holotapes or notes that would unfold their own little tragic stories and have their own little secret miniquests attached, seems obsidian concentrated on dialogue-driven events for this one

which is fine, but i really enjoyed that type of thing in FO3 (sometimes moreso than the lengthier quests with heavy story elements) and so far i kind of miss it here

just feels like it's missing that mood of desperation, that "wow, everything really went away in the blink of an eye" feeling where every building you entered seemed haunted, and simple touches like seeing a tiny scorched skeleton in a bedroom crib would disturb you for a long while afterwards

i guess the first time you encounter the legion is a little unsettling, but...expected, maybe?

so far i'm not seeing where the writing is that stellar in comparison, i haven't yet found a questline as affecting as finding the violin for the old lady and discovering what kind of torturous things happened to her sister in the vault, or run across any weird random characters like the king of the ants or the two feuding superhero/villains

Just got to Freeside/The Strip around 13 hours.  Seems really cool.  Nice to have a place with people.

Honestly I'd be fine with the game if it had a proper run button.  Your auto-run speed on the wasteland is VERY VERY SLOW which is what makes all the travel feel so tedious.  If you could run at the speed of an FPS and blitz around the whole experience would be much more pleasant.  I got around this with F3 by using speed mods.  I should probably check if there's anything like that for NV yet.

Just say Weeaboos need not apply

I love wrpgs.  Even moreso than jrpgs.  I just hate Bethesda games.  To be fair, New Vegas is the best Bethesda game I've ever played because it's not Bethesda; but it still has too much of its roots in Bethesda gameplay which drags it down for me.

Yeah, my favorite moment of the game is finally meeting up with one of the Legion members. They really come off as menacing.

And I agree that the areas in this game feel more "lived in" as if its getting back to normalcy but I think its in part to the structuring NCR is applying in the areas. Where in the East and The Brotherhood its everybody for themselves outside of The Brotherhood.

I'm really enjoying the game mostly in part to the different weaponry and the fact that taking on companions isn't bothersome (as far as management).

What the game is missing for me is that "hidden threat". Its all about gang members and factions but there's nothing here thats inspiring as much fear (well maybe the Legionnaires). Before it was Super Mutants and The Enclave.

I wish they'd gone all the way though and not put a limit on companions.  There's no logical story-reason to limit them to two and Fallout 1/2 let you build up a whole posse that walked around with you.

Still it's nice that your companions are super powerful in this.  I almost never have to fight my own fights as they do way more damage than I do and they detect enemies before me.  I just walk around and they kill anyone who is my enemy before they even reach me.

yeah, it's definitely lacking that ominous presence and that paranoia of being constantly watched

My major problem so far is that I just find the quests often confusing which was rarely the case for me in Fallout 3. But I'll shut up now and comment again when I'm much further along.

Yeah I have Boone & ED-E but it sucks not being able to take new people I meet with me.  Boone is awesome for combat and ED-E has some interesting story stuff so I like keeping him around.

Looked around a bit and damn, already a bunch of gameplay mods for NV.  Including several running speed boosts.  yay!  I should've looked for this stuff 10 hours ago.  I've covered most of the wasteland by now already :X

or run across any weird random characters like the king of the ants or the two feuding superhero/villains

That's what the Wild Wasteland Perk is for.

I've got ED-E and Veronica as my companions. I love Veronica's "backstory". Won't spoil it but its worth taking her on so she can take you someplace (I'm not sure if it can be done without her).

The Wild Wasteland isn't exactly the same as Fallout 3's quests. The guide has maybe 9 scenarios that occur under Wild Wasteland.

yeah, i took wild wasteland but haven't noticed anything exceptionally wacky yet

it did kind of bug me that you had to choose it as a perk - i thought it should have just been an option you turned on in the main menu

It's hardly even noticable. I found two dead bodies of "Owen and Beru" in Novac and all that happened was a spooky noise played and the top left corner said "...."

There are permanent skill books as well. But the temporary ones are extremely useful combined with the 3x increase perk. If yo cant pick a lock, read a book, then pick.
